1. Forces and Types of Forces |
A force is a push or a pull acting on an object. Forces can change an object's shape, speed or direction. The unit of force is the newton (N), named after Sir Isaac Newton.
Forces can be grouped into contact forces, such as friction, air resistance, tension and normal reaction, which act only when objects touch. Non‑contact forces, like gravitational force, magnetic force and electrostatic force, can act at a distance without direct contact.
Friction is a force that opposes motion between two surfaces in contact. It can be useful (e.g. walking, braking) or a problem (e.g. causing wear, wasting energy).
2. Balanced and Unbalanced Forces |
When multiple forces act on an object and cancel each other out, the forces are balanced. The object stays at rest or moves at a constant speed in a straight line.
When forces on an object are unbalanced, there is a net (resultant) force in one direction. This causes the object to accelerate, decelerate or change direction. Acceleration is always in the direction of the net force.
Free‑body diagrams use arrows to show all forces acting on an object. The length of each arrow represents the magnitude of the force, and the arrowhead shows the direction.
3. Speed and Distance–Time Graphs |
Speed tells you how fast an object is moving. It is a scalar quantity, meaning it has magnitude only and no specific direction. The average speed can be calculated using:
average speed = total distance ÷ total time
The SI unit for speed is metres per second (m/s), but you will also see kilometres per hour (km/h).
A distance–time graph shows how far an object has travelled over time. A straight, sloping line represents constant speed. A horizontal line means the object is stationary. The gradient (steepness) of the line gives the speed.
If the line curves upwards, the object is accelerating; if it curves downwards, the object is decelerating.
4. Energy Forms and Transfers |
Energy is the ability to do work. It is measured in joules (J) and can exist in many forms: kinetic, gravitational potential, elastic potential, thermal (heat), chemical, electrical, light (radiant), sound and nuclear.
Energy can be transferred from one store to another or one form to another. For example, when you light a match, chemical energy is transferred to thermal energy and light energy. An important rule is the law of conservation of energy: energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred or converted.
In energy transfer diagrams (Sankey diagrams), a thicker arrow represents more useful energy, while thinner arrows show wasted energy, often as thermal energy spreading into the surroundings.
5. Energy Resources and Power |
Energy resources are divided into renewable and non‑renewable. Renewable resources can be replenished in a short time, while non‑renewable resources are finite and take millions of years to form.
|---|---|---|
| Fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas) 化石燃料 | Non‑renewable | Burned to release chemical energy, but produce CO₂. |
| Nuclear 核能 | Non‑renewable | Energy from splitting uranium atoms, no CO₂ but radioactive waste. |
| Solar 太阳能 | Renewable | Sunlight converted directly into electricity using photovoltaic cells. |
| Wind 风能 | Renewable | Wind turbines turn kinetic energy of wind into electricity. |
| Hydroelectric 水电 | Renewable | Flowing water spins turbines, often from reservoirs. |
| Tidal 潮汐能 | Renewable | Uses the rise and fall of sea levels to generate electricity. |
Power is the rate of energy transfer or the rate of doing work. It is measured in watts (W).
power = energy transferred ÷ time
A 60 W lamp transfers 60 joules of electrical energy into light and thermal energy every second.
6. Electric Circuits and Current |
An electric current is a flow of electric charge. In a metal wire, the charge is carried by moving electrons. Current is measured in amperes (A) using an ammeter connected in series.
A complete circuit needs a source of electrical energy (cell or battery), connecting wires, and a load (such as a bulb or buzzer). Conventional current flows from the positive terminal to the negative terminal, but electrons actually move in the opposite direction.
In a series circuit, there is only one loop. The current is the same at all points. In a parallel circuit, the current splits into different branches and then recombines.
Circuit diagrams use standard symbols. Common ones include: cell, battery, switch (open/closed), lamp, resistor, variable resistor, ammeter, voltmeter, and fuse.
7. Voltage, Resistance and Ohm's Law |
Voltage (potential difference) is the 'push' that drives current around a circuit. It is measured in volts (V) using a voltmeter connected in parallel across a component.
Resistance tells us how difficult it is for current to flow. It is measured in ohms (Ω). The higher the resistance, the smaller the current for a given voltage.
Ohm's law links voltage, current and resistance for a resistor at constant temperature:
voltage = current × resistance (V = I × R)
In a series circuit, the total resistance increases as more resistors are added. In parallel, the total resistance decreases because additional paths are available for current.
Components like diodes and filament bulbs do not obey Ohm's law at all conditions because their resistance changes with temperature or current direction.
8. Magnetism and Electromagnets |
A magnet has two poles – north‑seeking (north) and south‑seeking (south). Like poles repel each other; unlike poles attract. The magnetic force is strongest at the poles.
A magnetic field is the region around a magnet where a magnetic material or another magnet experiences a force. Field lines point from north to south outside the magnet. The closer the lines, the stronger the field.
An electromagnet is a coil of wire (solenoid) with an iron core. When current flows through the coil, a magnetic field is produced. The strength can be increased by increasing the current, adding more turns to the coil or using a soft iron core.
Electromagnets are useful because they can be switched on and off. They are used in electric bells, relays, loudspeakers and magnetic separators.
9. Sound Waves and Hearing |
Sound is produced by vibrating objects. The vibrations travel through a medium (solid, liquid or gas) as longitudinal waves. Sound cannot travel through a vacuum because there are no particles to vibrate.
The frequency of a sound wave is the number of vibrations per second, measured in hertz (Hz). Higher frequency gives a higher pitch. The amplitude of the wave determines loudness: a larger amplitude means a louder sound.
Human hearing ranges roughly from 20 Hz to 20 000 Hz. Sounds above this are ultrasound, which is used in medical imaging and sonar. Sounds below are infrasound.
The speed of sound in air is approximately 340 m/s. Sound travels faster in solids than in liquids, and faster in liquids than in gases, because particles are closer together.
10. Light and the Electromagnetic Spectrum |
erse waves. It can travel through a vacuum at a speed of about 300 000 km/s (3 × 10⁸ m/s).
The electromagnetic spectrum, in order of increasing frequency (and decreasing wavelength), is: radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X‑rays and gamma rays. Visible light is only a tiny part of this spectrum, with red having the longest wavelength and violet the shortest.
Light can be reflected by smooth surfaces, obeying the law of reflection: angle of incidence equals angle of reflection. Refraction occurs when light crosses the boundary between two materials of different densities, causing it to change speed and direction unless it hits along the normal.
White light can be dispersed by a prism into the colours of the rainbow (spectrum). The splitting happens because different colours of light refract by different amounts in glass.
11. Particle Model and States of Matter |
The particle model describes matter as being made of tiny, moving particles. The arrangement and motion of these particles explain the properties of solids, liquids and gases.
In solids, particles are held tightly in a regular pattern and only vibrate in fixed positions. In liquids, particles are close but can slide past each other, so liquids flow. In gases, particles are far apart, move randomly at high speed, and fill any container.
Changes of state include melting (solid to liquid), freezing (liquid to solid), boiling/evaporation (liquid to gas), condensation (gas to liquid) and sublimation (solid directly to gas).
Mass is conserved during a change of state, but the arrangement and energy of particles changes. The temperature stays constant at the melting point or boiling point until the change is complete, because energy is used to break forces between particles rather than raise temperature.
12. Gravity, Space and the Solar System |
Gravity is a non‑contact force of attraction between any two objects with mass. The greater the masses, the stronger the gravitational pull; the greater the distance, the weaker the pull.
in newtons (N) and depends on the gravitational field strength (g). On Earth, g ≈ 10 N/kg.
weight = mass × gravitational field strength (W = m × g)
Our Solar System consists of the Sun (a star), eight planets, their moons, dwarf planets, asteroids and comets. The order of planets from the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The force of gravity keeps all these objects in their orbits.
The Earth rotates on its tilted axis once every 24 hours, causing day and night. It orbits the Sun once every 365¼ days (one year), giving rise to seasons due to the axial tilt.
