📚 Seattle: Rain, Rainforests and a Tech Boom |
Seattle is the largest city in Washington State and the beating heart of the American Pacific Northwest. Sitting on a narrow isthmus between the salt water of Puget Sound and the fresh water of Lake Washington, it is a modern, restless metropolis that draws the attention of the world with a distinctive climate, spectacular natural scenery and a world-class technology industry.
1. Seattle at a Glance |
Seattle is the seat of King County and by far the largest city in Washington State, with roughly 750,000 residents inside the city limits and about four million people in the wider metropolitan area. It is known by several nicknames: the Emerald City for its evergreen greenery, the Rain City for its famous drizzle, and Jet City for its long aviation history.
Geographically, the city occupies a north-south isthmus, which means water lies on both sides of the urban core. To the west is Puget Sound, a deep inlet of the Pacific Ocean; to the east is Lake Washington. The Canadian border is about 160 km to the north, Portland about 280 km to the south, and Vancouver, British Columbia, only about 230 km away.

2. Climate: Mild, Wet and Four Distinct Seasons |
Climate is one of Seattle's most recognisable labels. Influenced by Pacific air masses that arrive from the west, the city enjoys a mild, humid climate with four clearly distinguishable seasons. Winters are cool rather than freezing, and summers are warm rather than hot, which keeps the city comfortable almost all year round.
In climatology, Seattle is usually described as having a warm-summer Mediterranean climate (Csb) because its summers are markedly dry, even though the city is far better known for rain. Typical winter days reach about 8 °C with night-time lows near 3 °C; snow is uncommon but does fall in most years, and occasional Pacific windstorms sweep through between October and March.

3. Why Does It Rain So Much? The Rain Shadow Explained |
Here is a surprising fact: Seattle receives only about 950 mm of precipitation a year, which is actually less than New York City, Houston or Miami. What gives the city its rainy reputation is not volume but frequency. Measurable rain falls on roughly 150 days a year, and more than 200 days are cloudy to some degree. Most of that rain is light drizzle rather than a heavy downpour, which is why many locals simply pull up a hood instead of opening an umbrella.
The mechanism behind both the grey skies and the dry summers is the rain shadow. Moist air from the Pacific is pushed eastwards by the prevailing winds and forced to rise over the Olympic Mountains. As the air rises it cools, and its water vapour condenses into cloud and rain, drenching the western slopes of the peninsula. By the time the air descends over Puget Sound, it is much drier, so Seattle sits in the mountains' rain shadow.
The wet season runs from October to May, with a smaller secondary peak often linked to the Puget Sound convergence zone, a band of enhanced showers that forms when air flows around the Olympics and meets again over the city. From July to mid-September, rainfall almost disappears.
Annual precipitation ≈ 950 mm | Rainy days ≈ 150 | Cloudy days > 200
4. Long, Gentle, Golden Summers |
Although rainfall is plentiful across the year as a whole, summer in Seattle is exceptionally long and pleasant, with temperatures that are almost perfectly calibrated for outdoor life. July and August average highs of about 24-26 °C with night-time lows near 13-14 °C, and there is very little rain for weeks on end.
Because the city is so far north - roughly 47° north latitude - summer days are extraordinarily long. Around the June solstice there are nearly 16 hours of daylight, and the sun does not set until well after 21:00. The result is a season of late-evening light, terrace dinners, and long walks along the waterfront.

5. Mountains, Lakes and Sea: The Physical Setting |
Seattle's setting is remarkable even by North American standards. It lies in a natural amphitheatre of water, forest and volcanoes. The city itself hugs an isthmus; Puget Sound, a deep fjord-like inlet, lies to the west, and Lake Washington, about 33 km long and up to 65 m deep, lies to the east. Smaller lakes such as Lake Union and Green Lake sit inside the urban area.
