1. Lab Safety and Hazard Symbols |
Always wear safety goggles and a lab coat before starting any practical work. Goggles protect your eyes from chemical splashes, while the lab coat shields your skin and clothing. Tie back long hair and remove dangling jewellery to avoid catching them on equipment or flames. Bags should be stored under the bench so that walkways stay clear and nobody trips while carrying glassware.
Basic laboratory rules are examinable content, not just common sense. Never eat, drink or taste anything in the lab. Never smell a gas directly: use your hand to waft the vapour gently towards your nose. Report every spill or breakage to your teacher immediately, and never clear broken glass with your bare hands. Wash your hands thoroughly at the end of every practical, and make sure you know where the eyewash station, fire blanket, fire extinguisher and emergency exit are located.
You must be able to recognise common hazard symbols displayed on chemical bottles. These include flammable (a flame), corrosive (a test tube dripping liquid onto a hand and surface), toxic (skull and crossbones), oxidising (a circle with a flame) and harmful/irritant (an exclamation mark). Understanding these symbols helps you handle substances safely and explains why different substances need different precautions.
- Flammable | 易燃: keep away from bunsen flames and sparks; store in a cool, ventilated place.
- Corrosive | 腐蚀性: wear goggles and gloves; avoid all skin and eye contact.
- Toxic | 有毒: never inhale or swallow; use only in a fume cupboard when instructed.
- Oxidising | 氧化性: keep well away from flammable materials, as it can intensify a fire.
- Harmful / Irritant | 有害/刺激性: wash the affected skin immediately with plenty of water.
- Environmental hazard | 环境危害: never pour down the sink; dispose of it in the labelled waste container.
2. Knowing and Naming Laboratory Apparatus |
Assessed practical work often begins with choosing the right apparatus. A beaker is used for holding and roughly mixing liquids, but it is not accurate for measuring volume. A conical flask is ideal for swirling during a reaction because its narrow neck reduces splashing. A measuring cylinder gives a reasonably accurate volume, while a pipette gives a single fixed, very accurate volume and a burette allows accurate variable volumes to be delivered drop by drop.
For heating you will use a tripod, gauze and heatproof mat, or a pipe-clay triangle for a crucible. An evaporating dish is used for crystallisation, a boiling tube for heating larger volumes of liquid, and a test tube for small-scale reactions. Filtration requires a funnel, filter paper and a conical flask or beaker to collect the filtrate, and a glass rod to pour down so that liquid does not splash.
Other apparatus you should be able to name and describe includes the clamp stand and boss for holding equipment, the spatula for transferring solids, the watch glass for holding a small sample, the pestle and mortar for grinding solids into powder, the gas syringe or delivery tube and bung for collecting gas, and the top-pan balance for measuring mass. In written answers, always name the apparatus specifically rather than writing "the equipment".
3. Measuring Accurately: Mass, Volume and Temperature |
Volume is read from a measuring cylinder at eye level, with the bottom of the curved meniscus in line with the mark. Looking from above or below causes a parallax error and an inaccurate reading. Always read to the nearest half of the smallest division, and remember that a 10 cm³ measuring cylinder is more precise than a 100 cm³ one for small volumes.
Mass is measured on a top-pan balance, which must be zeroed (tared) before use, and is normally recorded to two decimal places, for example 2.45 g. A thermometer should have its bulb fully immersed in the liquid but must not touch the sides or the bottom of the container, otherwise you measure the temperature of the glass rather than of the substance. For the volume of an irregular solid, use displacement: the volume of the solid equals the final volume minus the initial volume of water.
Every measurement must be written with its correct unit and an appropriate number of significant figures. Copying too many digits from a digital display suggests false precision; copying too few loses information. Units to use include g and kg for mass, cm³ and dm³ for volume, °C for temperature, s for time and mol/dm³ for concentration.
4. Using a Bunsen Burner and Heating Safely |
A Bunsen burner has a base, a chimney (barrel), a collar that controls the air hole, and a gas inlet. With the air hole closed, the flame is yellow, luminous and relatively cool: this is the safety flame, which is easy to see. With the air hole open, the flame is blue and much hotter: this is the roaring flame used for heating. The hottest part of the flame is just above the tip of the inner blue cone.
To light the burner, first close the air hole, then strike a splint and hold it to the side of the top of the chimney before turning on the gas fully. Always light the splint before turning on the gas. If the flame burns inside the barrel and makes a hissing noise, that is striking back: turn off the gas immediately, let the burner cool and relight it with the air hole closed.
When heating a liquid in a test tube, fill it no more than one third full and hold it with a test tube holder, pointing the mouth away from yourself and others. Move the tube gently through the flame rather than holding it still, to avoid violent boiling and spitting. Use a heatproof mat under the burner, and never leave a lit burner unattended.
5. Separating Mixtures: The Techniques You Must Know | 混合物分离:必须掌握的技术
The technique you choose depends on the physical properties of the mixture. Filtration separates an insoluble solid from a liquid: the solid left in the filter paper is the residue and the liquid that passes through is the filtrate. To fold the filter paper correctly, fold it in half, then in half again, open it into a cone and place it in the funnel, wetting it so that it sticks to the sides.
Crystallisation (evaporation) recovers a dissolved solid from a solution. Heat the solution gently in an evaporating dish until crystals begin to appear at the edges, then leave it to cool and crystallise slowly; heating to dryness can spit and may decompose the solid. Simple distillation separates a solvent from a solution by evaporating the liquid and condensing the vapour, and it can also be used to separate liquids with different boiling points.
Chromatography separates dissolved substances that have different solubilities in a solvent. Draw a pencil line near the bottom of the paper, place a small spot of the mixture on it, and stand the paper in a shallow layer of solvent so that the solvent does not touch the spot. Each substance travels a different distance and produces a separate spot.
Rf = distance moved by the spot ÷ distance moved by the solvent front
The Rf value is always less than 1 and is a fixed property of a substance under the same conditions, so it can be used to identify an unknown substance by comparing it with known samples. Magnetic separation removes iron filings from a mixture, decanting pours off a liquid from settled solid, and sieving separates solids of different particle size.
6. Making and Recording Observations |
Observations must be recorded as the practical proceeds, not from memory afterwards. Write down everything you see, hear, feel (through the container) or smell, including results that do not match your prediction. An unexpected observation is valuable data and should never be quietly left out of your table.
Use precise scientific language. Instead of "it went cloudy", write "a white precipitate formed". Instead of "it bubbled", write "colourless gas was evolved and bubbles of gas were seen". Instead of "it got hot", write "the temperature rose from 21 °C to 34 °C, showing the reaction is exothermic". Qualitative observations describe appearance, colour, state and smell; quantitative observations include numbers with units.
Avoid dangerous or unreliable observations. Never taste anything. Never put your nose directly over a vessel; waft the vapour towards your nose with your hand. When using a flame test or heating a solid, look through the side of the container rather than leaning over it, and always record the colour of a flame against a clean flame as a comparison.
7. Planning and Writing a Method |
A good plan starts with an aim, which states what you are trying to find out, for example "to find out how the temperature of the acid affects the rate of reaction with magnesium". A hypothesis is a scientific explanation, not just a guess, and it should be supported by a reason such as collision theory. A prediction states what you expect to happen and should follow logically from the hypothesis.
The method should be written as numbered steps, using command verbs such as "measure", "add", "stir", "record" and "repeat". Give exact quantities and concentrations, for example "25 cm³ of 0.5 mol/dm³ hydrochloric acid", rather than "some acid". List the apparatus separately and state clearly which variable you will change, which you will measure and which you will keep the same.
Include a statement about repeats and safety. Repeat each measurement at least three times and calculate a mean to reduce the effect of random error. State the safety precautions explicitly: "wear goggles because the acid is irritant", "handle the hot crucible with tongs", or "use a fume cupboard because chlorine is toxic". A plan without safety precautions will always lose marks.
8. Variables: Independent, Dependent and Control |
Every investigation has three types of variable. The independent variable is the one you deliberately change. The dependent variable is the one you measure, and it must respond to the independent variable. The control variables are all the other factors that must be kept constant so that the test is fair and your conclusion is valid.
| Independent | 自变量 | temperature of the acid | 酸的初始温度 | the solvent used | 所用溶剂 |
| Dependent | 因变量 | volume of gas collected per minute | 每分钟收集的气体体积 | distance moved by the spot | 斑点移动的距离 |
| Control | 控制变量 | concentration, volume, mass and surface area of magnesium | 酸的浓度与体积、镁的质量与表面积 | run time, paper type, size of the spot, pencil line height | 展开时间、滤纸种类、斑点大小、起始线高度 |
A common mistake is to change more than one variable at a time. If you change both the temperature and the concentration, you cannot tell which one caused the change in the rate. Another common mistake is to state a control variable vaguely: "keep everything else the same" is weaker than naming each factor explicitly.
9. Tables, Graphs and Data Processing |
Record your results in a table drawn with a ruler and ruled columns. The first column holds the independent variable and the following columns hold the dependent variables. Headings must include both the quantity and the unit, written as "time / s" or "volume of gas / cm³", where the forward slash means "divided by".
For graphs, put the independent variable on the x-axis and the dependent variable on the y-axis. Label each axis with the quantity and unit, use a sensible scale that fills the grid, and plot the points with small crosses. Draw a smooth line of best fit rather than joining dot to dot, unless the data are categories, in which case use a bar chart.
Identify anomalous results: a point that lies a long way from the trend line should be circled and, if you are confident it is a mistake, ignored when calculating a mean. Calculate means by adding the valid values and dividing by how many there are. If the graph is a straight line through the origin, the two variables are directly proportional, and the gradient is the constant of proportionality.
10. Accuracy, Precision, Reliability and Validity |
Accuracy describes how close a measurement is to the true value. Precision describes how close repeated measurements are to each other. A set of readings can be precise but inaccurate, for example if a balance is not zeroed: every reading is consistently too high. This kind of error is called systematic error, and it affects all readings in the same direction.
Random errors vary unpredictably from reading to reading and are caused by limitations of the equipment or by human judgement when reading a scale. They can be reduced by taking repeats and calculating a mean, by using a more sensitive instrument, or by reading at eye level to avoid parallax.
Reliability means the results can be trusted because they have been repeated and are consistent. Validity means the investigation actually measures what it claims to measure, which depends on controlling all the relevant variables. An investigation can be reliable but invalid if, for example, the temperature was not controlled and it changed the rate of reaction.
11. Risk Assessment and Evaluating Your Results |
A risk assessment identifies the hazard, states who might be harmed, and gives a control measure that reduces the risk. Writing "it is dangerous" earns no marks; writing "hydrochloric acid is irritant, so it could splash into the eyes of anyone nearby, therefore goggles must be worn" does.
| Hot crucible | 灼热的坩埚 | Burns to the hands | 手部烫伤 | Use tongs; let it cool on a heatproof mat | 使用坩埚钳;放在隔热垫上冷却 |
| Bunsen flame | 本生灯火焰 | Fire or burns, loose hair catching alight | 起火或烧伤,长发被点燃 | Tie hair back; keep the work area clear; never leave it unattended | 束起长发;保持台面整洁;不能无人看管 |
