1. Scarcity and Opportunity Cost |
Scarcity is the fundamental economic problem: unlimited human wants but limited resources. Because resources are finite, choices must be made. The cost of any choice is the value of the next best alternative forgone — this is called opportunity cost.
Opportunity Cost = Value of Next Best Alternative Sacrificed
Remember that opportunity cost is not the sum of all alternatives, only the best one given up. It applies to individuals, firms, and governments.
2. Factors of Production |
Economists classify resources used to produce goods and services into four factors of production: Land, Labour, Capital, and Enterprise. Land includes all natural resources; Labour is the human effort; Capital means man-made tools and machinery; Enterprise is the risk-taking ability that organises the other three factors.
The rewards to each factor are: Rent for Land, Wages for Labour, Interest for Capital, and Profit for Enterprise. Understanding these rewards helps you analyse how income is distributed in an economy.
3. Production Possibility Frontier (PPF) |
A PPF curve shows the maximum possible output combinations of two goods that an economy can produce when all resources are fully and efficiently employed. Points inside the curve represent inefficiency or unemployment; points on the curve are efficient; points outside are currently unattainable.
The shape of the PPF illustrates the concept of increasing opportunity cost: as you produce more of one good, you must give up increasing amounts of the other. This occurs because resources are not equally suited to all types of production.
Shift of PPF to the right = Economic Growth
4. Demand and the Law of Demand |
Demand refers to the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at various prices over a given period. The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus, as price rises, quantity demanded falls, and vice versa. This inverse relationship creates a downward-sloping demand curve.
Law of Demand: P ↑ → Qd ↓ and P ↓ → Qd ↑ (ceteris paribus)
Factors that can shift the demand curve include changes in income, tastes, prices of related goods (substitutes and complements), and population size. A shift to the right means an increase in demand at every price.
5. Supply and the Law of Supply |
Supply is the quantity of a good or service that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at various prices. The law of supply says that, ceteris paribus, as price rises, quantity supplied rises; as price falls, quantity supplied falls. This positive relationship gives an upward-sloping supply curve.
Law of Supply: P ↑ → Qs ↑ and P ↓ → Qs ↓ (ceteris paribus)
Supply curve shifters include changes in production costs, technology, taxes and subsidies, and the number of sellers. A rightward shift indicates an increase in supply.
6. Market Equilibrium and Price Mechanism |
Market equilibrium occurs where the demand and supply curves intersect. At the equilibrium price, quantity demanded equals quantity supplied, so there is no shortage or surplus. The price mechanism automatically adjusts to restore equilibrium if the market is out of balance.
Equilibrium condition: Qd = Qs at Pe
Excess demand (shortage) pushes prices up; excess supply (surplus) pushes prices down. This rationing, signalling, and incentive function of price is the heart of the market system.
7. Price Elasticity of Demand (PED) | 需求价格弹性 (PED)
Price elasticity of demand measures how responsive quantity demanded is to a change in price. It is calculated as the percentage change in quantity demanded divided by the percentage change in price.
PED = (%Δ in Qd) / (%Δ in Price)
PED = (需求量变化百分比) / (价格变化百分比)
tors affecting PED include availability of substitutes, degree of necessity, and proportion of income spent on the good.
8. Costs, Revenue and Profit |
e × Quantity sold. Total cost (TC) is the sum of fixed costs (FC) and variable costs (VC).
TR = P × Q
TR = P × Q
TC = FC + VC
TC = FC + VC
Profit is total revenue minus total cost. Average cost (AC or ATC) is total cost divided by output. Marginal cost (MC) is the extra cost of producing one more unit.
Profit = TR - TC
利润 = TR - TC
AC = TC ÷ Q and MC = ΔTC ÷ ΔQ
AC = TC ÷ Q 且 MC = ΔTC ÷ ΔQ
should continue producing in the short run as long as price covers average variable cost.
9. Market Structures: An Overview |
Market structure describes the competitive environment in which firms operate. The main types are perfect competition, monopoly, oligopoly, and monopolistic competition. Each structure is defined by the number of sellers, type of product, barriers to entry, and control over price.
In perfect competition, many small firms sell identical products with no barriers to entry; they are price takers. A monopoly is a single seller with high barriers, and it is a price maker. Oligopoly involves a few large firms, often with interdependent pricing. Monopolistic competition has many firms selling differentiated products with some price-setting ability.
10. Government Intervention: Taxes and Subsidies |
Governments impose indirect taxes (such as VAT) on goods to raise revenue and discourage consumption. A tax shifts the supply curve to the left, raising the equilibrium price and reducing the equilibrium quantity. The burden of a tax is shared between consumers and producers.
Consumer Burden of Tax = (Post-tax Price - Pre-tax Price) × Post-tax Quantity
Producer Burden = Tax per unit × Post-tax Quantity - Consumer Burden
A subsidy lowers production costs, shifting the supply curve to the right, reducing the price paid by consumers and increasing quantity. The benefit of a subsidy is also split between consumers and producers.
11. Introduction to Macroeconomics: Key Indicators |
Macroeconomics looks at the economy as a whole. Three vital indicators are Gross Domestic Product (GDP), unemployment rate, and inflation rate. GDP measures the total value of goods and services produced in a country over a period.
GDP = C + I + G + (X - M)
GDP = 消费 + 投资 + 政府支出 + (出口 - 进口)
Unemployment rate is the percentage of the labour force that is without work but actively seeking employment. Inflation rate is the percentage increase in the general price level, often measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
Unemployment Rate = (Unemployed ÷ Labour Force) × 100%
Inflation Rate = [(CPI this year - CPI last year) ÷ CPI last year] × 100%
These indicators help policymakers target economic growth, full employment, and price stability.
