📚 Chicago: Architecture, Culture, Food and Sport in America's Midwest Metropolis |
Chicago is a city that students meet everywhere - in geography case studies, in history lessons about industrialisation and migration, and in architecture courses about the birth of the skyscraper. Sitting on the western shore of Lake Michigan, it is the third-largest metropolitan area in the United States and the beating heart of the Midwest. This article unpacks what makes Chicago distinctive: its layered history, its skyline, its cultural institutions, its food, its sport, and the transport and business networks that keep it moving.
1. Overview: Location and Regional Role |
Chicago lies in northeastern Illinois, on the western shore of Lake Michigan, at roughly 41.9° N, 87.6° W. It is the third-largest metropolitan area in the United States and an undisputed world-class hub of the Midwest - a place where commerce, finance, culture and transport converge and reinforce one another. The city itself covers about 600 km², while the wider metropolitan area stretches across several counties in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.
The four pillars below summarise why the city matters regionally and globally. If you are asked to characterise Chicago in an exam answer, these four words are a reliable starting framework.

2. Native Roots: From the 17th Century to Fort Dearborn |
The roots of Chicago reach back to the late 17th century, when the area was a Native American settlement and a meeting place for peoples including the Potawatomi, Odawa and Ojibwe. The name itself almost certainly comes from an Indigenous word recorded by early French explorers - most linguists trace it to a Miami-Illinois term for wild onion or garlic, shikaakwa, which grew abundantly along the marshy river banks.
French exploration of the region began in 1673, when Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet paddled through the area and recognised the strategic value of the short portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi watershed. In the 1780s Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, a trader of African and French descent, established a permanent trading post; he is generally regarded as the city's first non-Native settler. Fort Dearborn followed in 1803, the settlement was incorporated as a town in 1833 and as a city in 1837.

3. Rebirth After the Fire: The Industrial and Transport Crossroads |
In October 1871 the Great Chicago Fire destroyed roughly 3.3 square miles of the city, killed around 300 people and left about 100,000 residents homeless out of a population of some 300,000. What happened next is the defining episode of Chicago's modern identity: the city rebuilt itself with astonishing speed. Within a decade, new stone and brick buildings, a redesigned street grid and a fresh water and sewer system stood where the ruins had been.
Rebuilding coincided with the railway age. By the late 19th century Chicago had become the rail crossroads of the continent, handling grain, lumber, livestock and mail-order goods. The Union Stock Yards, the lumber districts and the great mail-order houses such as Montgomery Ward and Sears turned the city into an industrial and transport hub, and waves of immigrants from Germany, Ireland, Poland, Italy, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe poured in. By 1900 the population exceeded 1.7 million, and Chicago had become one of the most important centres of the West in the 19th-century American sense of the word.

4. Architecture and the Skyscraper City |
Architecture is Chicago's signature, and the skyscraper is its emblem. After the fire, rising land values in the Loop pushed builders upward rather than outward, and a generation of engineers responded with new foundations, fireproofing and lift technology. The result was the Chicago School of architecture, whose most famous maxim - form follows function, associated with Louis Sullivan - still appears in design essays today.
The city is packed with landmark buildings. The Wrigley Building and Tribune Tower define the Michigan Avenue riverfront, the John Hancock Center pioneered the tapered braced-tube form, and contemporary additions such as the Aqua Tower continue the tradition of technical experimentation. Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie-style houses in Oak Park and Mies van der Rohe's steel-and-glass towers from the 1950s show how two very different design philosophies both took root here.
