Music is a practical and theoretical subject; understanding the building blocks helps you become a more confident musician. Use this guide alongside your class notes and AQA resources to reinforce your knowledge.

The guide covers twelve areas: the elements of music, rhythm and metre, pitch and harmony, dynamics and articulation, timbre and instruments, texture and structure, notation, performing, composing, listening and appraising, historical styles, and world music with revision strategies. Each term is given in English with its Chinese equivalent so that you can build a reliable musical vocabulary.

1. The Elements of Music |

The elements of music are the core ingredients that make up any piece. In KS3 AQA, students learn to identify and describe pitch, rhythm, dynamics, timbre, texture, tempo, structure, and silence. These eight elements work together, so a change in one always affects how we hear the others.

A popular mnemonic is "DR T SMITH" (Dynamics, Rhythm, Tempo, Structure, Melody, Instruments, Texture, Harmony). Some teachers use "DR SMITH" or "MRS T" instead. Whichever version you learn, make sure you can define each term and support it with a musical example from a piece you have studied.

When analysing a piece of music, you should be able to point out how these elements are used. For example, a fast tempo combined with loud dynamics creates excitement, while a sparse texture and soft dynamics can evoke calm and reflection.

2. Rhythm, Metre and Tempo |

Rhythm is the pattern of sounds and silences organised in time, while the beat (pulse) is the steady unit you tap your foot to. Metre groups beats into bars, and the time signature tells you how many beats are in each bar and which note value equals one beat.

Common time signatures at KS3 include 4/4 (four crotchet beats per bar), 3/4 (waltz), 2/4 (march) and 6/8 (compound duple, two dotted-crotchet beats per bar). Syncopation places accents off the beat and is a key feature of jazz, reggae and much pop music.

Tempo is measured in beats per minute (BPM). You can convert BPM into the length of a single beat using the formula below, which is useful when you programme a drum loop or set a metronome.

Beat length in seconds = 60 ÷ BPM | 一拍时长(秒)= 60 ÷ BPM
