This article shows you how to analyse case studies step by step, using practical examples that match the KS3 AQA Economics curriculum. By the end you will have a repeatable framework, two fully worked examples, a data toolkit and an exam checklist, so you can feel confident tackling any case study question.
1. What Is a Case Study? |
A case study is a short, detailed story about a real or imaginary situation that contains an economic problem. It might be about a business deciding what to produce, a family choosing how to spend its budget, or a government planning a new policy. What makes it a case study rather than a simple story is the decision at its centre: someone must choose, and something must be given up.
Every KS3 case study sits inside the same basic economic problem: resources are scarce while wants are unlimited. Because of scarcity, every choice has an opportunity cost - the value of the next best alternative that is given up. When you read a case, look for the scarce resource (money, time, land, labour, raw materials) and the choices it forces people to make.
Case studies usually fall into three groups: consumer cases, producer cases and government cases. Consumer cases ask how households spend limited income; producer cases ask how firms set prices, output and costs; government cases ask how policy affects citizens, businesses and the whole economy.
2. Why Are Case Studies Important? |
Case studies help you develop critical skills such as problem-solving, evaluation and the application of knowledge. Instead of memorising facts, you learn to use concepts like scarcity, opportunity cost, and supply and demand to explain and predict outcomes. These skills are useful in exams and also help you understand the world around you.
They also train you to think like an economist: weighing up alternatives and justifying decisions with evidence rather than feelings. A strong answer does not just say what should happen - it explains why, using data from the case and economic reasoning.
Finally, case studies connect theory to real life. A demand curve becomes more meaningful when it explains why a school tuck shop sold fewer cakes after raising prices.
3. The 4-Step Case Analysis Framework |
To tackle any case study effectively, follow this simple framework. Step 1: identify the economic problem - what choice needs to be made? Step 2: gather relevant information - who is involved, and what are the constraints? Step 3: apply economic concepts to analyse the options. Step 4: evaluate the options and reach a justified conclusion.
| Step | What you do | 步骤说明 |
| 1. Identify | State the decision and who makes it | 说出决策内容与决策者 |
| 2. Gather | Select facts, numbers and constraints |
| 3. Apply | Use economic concepts to explain effects |
| 4. Evaluate | Compare options and give a judgement |
Use the framework as a checklist, not a script. In longer answers you will move back and forth between steps, adding evidence as you go.
4. Step 1: Identify the Economic Problem |
The first step is to state the problem in one clear sentence. A useful pattern is: "The decision-maker is X, who must choose between A and B because resource Y is scarce." This immediately shows the examiner that you understand the economics, not just the story.
Ask three questions: Who is deciding? What exactly are the options? What is limiting the choice? Common constraints include limited income, a fixed budget, limited shelf space, limited time, government rules, and the need to make a profit.
A common mistake is to describe the story instead of identifying the problem. Writing "the bakery sells cakes" earns no marks; writing "the bakery must decide whether to raise the price of cakes to increase profit" earns marks because it names the choice and the scarce resource.
5. Step 2: Gather and Sort the Evidence |
Once the problem is clear, collect only the information that matters. Sort it into quantitative data (numbers such as prices, quantities, costs, wages, tax rates) and qualitative information (opinions, customer comments, laws, reputation, quality).
Then convert raw facts into economic statements. "The price rises from £1.50 to £1.80" becomes "the price rises by 20%, which raises the opportunity cost of buying a cake for consumers". This translation is what turns reading into analysis.
Useful evidence to hunt for in any case:
- Numbers with units, and how they change over time
- Who gains and who loses from each option
- The time horizon - short run versus long run
- Any assumption the case quietly makes
6. Step 3: Apply Economic Concepts |
Now use the theory you have learned to explain cause and effect. The strongest answers use a chain of reasoning rather than a single statement. For example: a higher price reduces quantity demanded, which reduces sales, which may reduce revenue if demand is elastic, which lowers profit.
Concepts that appear again and again at KS3 include scarcity, opportunity cost, demand, supply, equilibrium price, revenue, cost, profit, competition, inflation, unemployment, externalities and government intervention such as taxes and subsidies.
Two formulas are worth remembering:
Profit = Total Revenue − Total Cost = (Price × Quantity) − Total Cost
Price Elasticity of Demand = %Δ quantity demanded ÷ %Δ price
If the calculated value is greater than 1, demand is elastic and a price rise reduces revenue. If it is less than 1, demand is inelastic and a price rise increases revenue.
7. Step 4: Evaluate and Justify a Decision |
Evaluation means weighing up both sides before giving a judgement. List the benefits and costs of each option for the different stakeholders - consumers, workers, owners, the government and society - and then decide which effect is likely to be largest.
Strong evaluation also considers time and uncertainty. A decision that works in the short run may fail in the long run if competitors respond, costs rise, or consumer tastes change. Data in case studies is often an estimate, so say so: "This assumes the estimate of 340 sales is accurate; if demand is more elastic than expected, revenue could fall."
Finish with a clear judgement using conditional language: "On balance, the price rise is likely to raise profit in the short run, but only if competitors do not cut their prices." This shows the examiner you can reach a conclusion without pretending the future is certain.
8. Worked Example: A Local Bakery |
Case: A small bakery sells cakes at £1.50 and sells 400 cakes a week. The owner is considering raising the price to £1.80. She estimates she would then sell 340 cakes a week. The variable cost of each cake is £0.60 and fixed costs are £150 a week.
Step 1 - the problem: the owner must decide whether to raise the price in order to increase profit, given limited customers and rising ingredient costs. Step 2 - the evidence: two price points, two quantities, variable cost per unit and fixed costs.
Step 3 - the analysis. Before: revenue = £1.50 × 400 = £600, total cost = (£0.60 × 400) + £150 = £390, so profit = £210. After: revenue = £1.80 × 340 = £612, total cost = (£0.60 × 340) + £150 = £354, so profit = £258.
Step 4 - evaluation. Profit rises by £48 a week, mainly because variable costs fall as fewer cakes are baked, so demand is inelastic over this range. But there are risks: customers may switch to a rival shop, the estimate of 340 sales may be wrong, and the bakery may lose goodwill. Judgement: the price rise is likely to be worthwhile, provided that regular customers stay loyal.
9. Worked Example: Government Policy on Sugar |
Case: A government introduces a tax on sugary drinks of 24 pence per litre. Producers say they will raise prices, some will reformulate their recipes, and health charities support the policy.
Step 1 - the problem: the government must decide whether to tax sugary drinks to reduce consumption, knowing that the tax will raise prices and may hit poorer households hardest. Step 2 - the evidence: the size of the tax, producer reactions, and the health costs linked to high sugar consumption.
Step 3 - the analysis: the tax raises the cost of production, shifting supply to the left, so the equilibrium price rises and the quantity bought falls. High sugar consumption creates a negative externality - costs such as NHS treatment that are paid by society, not by the buyer - so a tax can move consumption closer to the socially optimal level. It also raises tax revenue that could fund health education.
Step 4 - evaluation: the policy is likely to cut consumption, but the effect depends on elasticity; if demand for sugary drinks is inelastic, the quantity falls only slightly while consumers pay much of the tax. The tax may also be regressive, taking a larger share of income from poorer families, and firms may simply pass the cost on rather than reformulate. Judgement: the tax is probably effective when combined with clearer labelling and subsidies for healthier alternatives.
10. Data, Tables and Simple Calculations |
Many case studies include a table, and examiners expect you to use it, not just describe it. Read the row and column headings, check the units (thousands, millions, £, %) and look for the trend, the turning point and the largest and smallest values.
Useful calculations at KS3 include percentage change, market share and profit margin:
% change = (New value − Original value) ÷ Original value × 100
Profit margin = Profit ÷ Revenue × 100
Always show your working and give the correct unit. If a firm's revenue rises from £600 to £612, the percentage change is (612 − 600) ÷ 600 × 100 = 2%, so write "2%", not "2".
11. Common Mistakes and Exam Technique |
The most common mistake is ignoring the case. Answers that could be written without reading the extract score poorly. Always quote a figure or a fact from the case to support each point.
Watch the command word. Describe means set out the facts; explain means give reasons using "because"; analyse means break the situation into causes and effects; evaluate means weigh both sides and reach a judgement. If the question says evaluate, an answer with no conclusion cannot reach the top band.
Other common slips:
- Writing opinions with no economic reasoning
- Confusing revenue with profit
- Assuming demand always falls by the same percentage as price rises
- Forgetting opportunity cost when discussing a choice
- Running out of time by planning for too long
12. Practice Set and Final Checklist |
Try these practice questions using the framework, then mark your own work against the checklist.
- Explain why a rise in the price of cakes may not reduce the bakery's revenue.
- Analyse the effect of a sugar tax on producers and consumers.
- Evaluate whether a government should subsidise public transport in a large city.
- Using the bakery data, calculate the percentage change in profit after the price rise.
- Discuss whether profit is the only aim a small business might have.
