1. Particle Model and States of Matter |
All matter is made of tiny particles. The arrangement and movement of these particles determine whether a substance is a solid, liquid or gas. In solids, particles are packed closely in a regular pattern and can only vibrate in fixed positions, giving solids a definite shape and volume.
Liquid particles are still close together but can slide past one another, so liquids flow without a fixed shape. Gas particles are far apart and move rapidly in all directions, which explains why gases can be compressed and exert pressure on container walls.
Changes of state, such as melting, freezing, boiling and condensing, involve energy transfer but no change in chemical composition. Heating increases particle kinetic energy, while cooling reduces it. Sublimation (solid to gas) and deposition (gas to solid) also occur in some substances like dry ice and iodine.
solid ⇌ liquid ⇌ gas
2. Atoms, Elements and Compounds |
An atom is the smallest particle of a chemical element that can exist. Every element is made up of only one type of atom and is represented by a unique chemical symbol, such as O for oxygen or Fe for iron. There are about 100 naturally occurring elements.
A compound contains two or more different elements chemically combined in a fixed proportion. Compounds have properties different from their constituent elements and can only be separated by chemical reactions. For example, water (H₂O) is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen, while carbon dioxide (CO₂) is a compound of carbon and oxygen.
It is important to distinguish compounds from mixtures. In a mixture, different substances are physically combined and can be separated by physical techniques. Air is a mixture of gases, not a compound. The components of a mixture can vary in proportion.
3. The Periodic Table |
The periodic table arranges all known elements in order of increasing atomic number (the number of protons in the nucleus). Rows are called periods, and columns are called groups. Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties because they have the same number of electrons in their outer shell.
Metals are found on the left and centre of the table, while non-metals are on the right. Group 1 contains the alkali metals (e.g. lithium, sodium, potassium), which are very reactive and stored in oil to prevent them reacting with air or water. Group 7 contains the halogens (e.g. fluorine, chlorine, bromine), non-metals that also react vigorously. Group 0, the noble gases, are extremely unreactive because their atoms have full outer electron shells.
Group 1: Li, Na, K → reactivity increases down the group
4. Chemical Reactions and Physical Changes |
A chemical reaction produces new substances with different properties from the reactants. Signs of a chemical reaction include colour change, formation of a precipitate, gas production (bubbles), and energy changes (temperature change, light). Chemical reactions are usually irreversible under normal conditions.
Physical changes, in contrast, are reversible and do not create new substances. Melting, freezing, boiling, condensing, and dissolving are physical changes. For example, ice melting to water is a physical change, but burning wood is a chemical change that produces ash, carbon dioxide and water vapour.
Every chemical reaction involves reactants turning into products. Word equations describe the reaction using names, while symbol equations use chemical formulae. An example of a thermal decomposition reaction is heating calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) to produce calcium oxide (CaO) and carbon dioxide (CO₂).
CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂
5. Acids and Alkalis |
Acids are substances that release hydrogen ions (H⁺) when dissolved in water. They have a pH less than 7, taste sour, and can be corrosive. Common laboratory acids include hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and nitric acid (HNO₃).
Bases are substances that neutralise acids. Alkalis are soluble bases that release hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water, giving a pH greater than 7 and a soapy feel. Examples include sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH). A neutral solution has a pH of 7, such as pure water.
Indicators are used to test whether a solution is acidic or alkaline. Litmus paper turns red in acid and blue in alkali. Universal indicator gives a range of colours across the pH scale from 0 (strong acid) to 14 (strong alkali). Many cleaning products contain alkalis, while lemon juice and vinegar contain acids.
6. Neutralisation |
Neutralisation occurs when an acid and a base react together, exactly cancelling each other's properties. The general equation is:
acid + alkali → salt + water
For example, hydrochloric acid reacts with sodium hydroxide to produce sodium chloride (common salt) and water:
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O
Salts are named after the metal in the base and the acid used. Hydrochloric acid produces chloride salts, sulfuric acid produces sulfates, and nitric acid produces nitrates. Neutralisation has many everyday uses, such as treating acidic soil with lime, relieving indigestion with antacid tablets, and controlling pH in swimming pools.
7. Metals and Reactivity |
Metals are typically shiny, good conductors of heat and electricity, and can be bent or hammered into shape (malleable and ductile). The reactivity series ranks metals from most to least reactive. The order, starting with the most reactive, is: potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium, zinc, iron, lead, copper, silver, gold.
More reactive metals react vigorously with cold water or dilute acids, producing hydrogen gas. Potassium and sodium react so violently with water that they must be handled extremely carefully. Magnesium reacts with steam or acids, while zinc and iron react slowly with acids. Copper and gold do not react with dilute acids at all.
Metals less reactive than carbon can be extracted from their ores using carbon as a reducing agent. For example, iron oxide is reduced by carbon to iron and carbon dioxide. Very reactive metals like potassium and aluminium are extracted by electrolysis.
Metal + acid → salt + hydrogen
8. Separation Techniques |
Mixtures can be separated using physical methods that take advantage of differences in physical properties. Filtration separates an insoluble solid from a liquid, using filter paper. Sand can be separated from water by filtration.
Evaporation and crystallisation are used to obtain a soluble solid from a solution. Heating the solution drives off the solvent, leaving solid crystals behind. Distillation separates a liquid from a solution or a mixture of liquids based on differences in boiling points. Simple distillation collects the solvent, while fractional distillation separates miscible liquids.
Chromatography separates small amounts of dissolved substances, such as the dyes in ink. A spot of mixture is placed on paper, and the different components travel at different speeds in a solvent, producing separate spots. This technique can be used to identify unknown substances by comparing their Rf values (retention factor).
9. Air and Combustion |
Air is a mixture of gases. The approximate composition by volume is: nitrogen 78%, oxygen 21%, argon 0.9%, carbon dioxide 0.04%, plus trace amounts of other gases and water vapour. Oxygen is essential for combustion and respiration.
Combustion is a rapid chemical reaction between a fuel and oxygen, releasing energy as heat and light. For hydrocarbons, complete combustion produces carbon dioxide and water. Incomplete combustion, often due to insufficient oxygen, forms carbon monoxide (a toxic gas) or carbon (soot).
Burning fossil fuels also emits sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, which dissolve in cloud water to form acid rain. This damages buildings, vegetation and aquatic life. The three conditions needed for a fire to continue—fuel, oxygen and heat—can be represented by the fire triangle; removing any one will extinguish the fire.
methane + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O)
10. Earth’s Atmosphere and Climate |
Earth's early atmosphere was formed by volcanic activity and contained mainly carbon dioxide, water vapour and little or no oxygen. Over billions of years, photosynthetic organisms produced oxygen, allowing the evolution of complex life. Today's atmosphere is a delicate balance maintained by natural cycles.
The carbon cycle describes how carbon moves between the atmosphere, oceans, living organisms and rocks. Key processes include photosynthesis (absorbing CO₂), respiration (releasing CO₂), combustion (releasing CO₂), and decomposition. Human activities, especially burning fossil fuels and deforestation, are adding extra CO₂ to the atmosphere, enhancing the greenhouse effect and driving global warming.
Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour trap infrared radiation and warm the Earth’s surface. Without this natural greenhouse effect, Earth would be too cold for life. However, anthropogenic emissions are intensifying this effect, causing climate change with rising sea levels and extreme weather.
