1. The Elements of Music |

All music can be described using a set of seven 'elements'. These are the building blocks you will hear and talk about in every topic. Knowing their names and meanings helps you move from simply liking a piece to explaining why it sounds the way it does.

The seven elements are: pitch (how high or low the notes are), rhythm (the pattern of long and short sounds), tempo (speed), dynamics (volume), timbre (the unique tone quality of a sound), texture (how the parts of the music are layered together) and structure (the overall plan of the piece). A composer manipulates these elements to create contrast, mood and interest. For example, a sudden change from soft to loud (dynamics) coupled with a faster speed (tempo) can produce excitement.

2. Rhythm and Metre |

Rhythm is the backbone of music. It organises sounds and silences in time. You need to recognise note values, understand time signatures and feel the pulse of a piece. Metre is the pattern of strong and weak beats that gives music its regular pulse, usually grouped in twos, threes or fours.

3. Pitch, Melody and Scales |

Pitch refers to how high or low a note sounds. A melody is a sequence of pitches that forms a memorable tune. Understanding how melodies move and the scales they are built from is key to performing and composing.

Melodies can move by step (conjunct) where notes are next to each other, or by leap (disjunct) where they jump larger intervals. Most memorable tunes use a mix of both: conjuct motion makes a melody smooth and singable, while a large leap can add drama. Scales are the 'vocabulary' of pitch. The major scale (e.g. C–D–E–F–G–A–B–C) sounds bright and happy. The natural minor scale sounds sadder. At KS3 you also meet the pentatonic scale (five notes, like the black keys on a piano) used widely in folk, rock and world music, and the chromatic scale moving entirely by semitones.

大调音阶(如 C–D–E–F–G–A–B–C)听感明亮欢快。

4. Harmony and Tonality |

Harmony happens when two or more different pitches sound at the same time. It adds depth and emotion. Tonality describes the key centre of a piece—whether it feels 'at home' in a major key, a minor key or something more modal.

The simplest harmony is a chord: three or more notes stacked in thirds. The primary triads (chords built on the 1st, 4th and 5th degrees of a scale) are the most important. In C major, these are C major (I), F major (IV) and G major (V). A chord progression like I–IV–V–I establishes the key strongly. Dissonant intervals (e.g. semitone clashes) create tension that asks to be resolved to consonant intervals (e.g. thirds and fifths). Cadences act as musical punctuation: a perfect cadence (V–I) sounds final, while a plagal cadence (IV–I) is the 'Amen' ending. At KS3 you begin to hear how major and minor tonalities affect mood.

5. Dynamics and Articulation |

Dynamics tell us how loudly or softly to perform. Articulation describes how notes are attacked and connected. Together they shape phrasing and expression, breathing life into the notes on the page.

Common dynamic markings range from pp (pianissimo, very soft) to ff (fortissimo, very loud). Gradual changes include crescendo (getting louder) and diminuendo (getting softer). A sudden sforzando (sfz) gives a strong accent. Articulation signs include staccato (short, detached), legato (smooth and connected), accent (stressed attack) and tenuto (held, slightly stressed). String players use pizzicato (plucked) and arco (bowed). Wind and brass players use tonguing. At KS3 you practise reading these markings while performing, and learn to use them purposefully in your own compositions.

常用力度记号从 pp(极弱)到 ff(极强)。

6. Tempo and Texture |

Tempo sets the speed of the beat and the character of the music. Texture describes the strands of sound and how they interact. These two elements work closely together to shape the overall feel of a piece.

Tempo is often given with Italian terms: Largo (broad, slow), Adagio (slow, stately), Andante (walking pace), Moderato (moderate), Allegro (fast, lively) and Presto (very fast). A metronome mark gives an exact beats-per-minute number. Common textures include monophonic (a single melody line alone), homophonic (melody with chordal accompaniment, the most natural texture in pop songs and hymns), polyphonic (two or more independent melodic lines weaving together, as in a canon) and heterophonic (same melody varied slightly across parts). At KS3 you explore these textures by listening, performing rounds and arranging simple pieces with layers.

速度常用意大利术语表示:Largo(宽广、缓慢),Adagio(缓慢、庄严),Andante(行进步伐),Moderato(中速),Allegro(快速、活泼),Presto(急速)。

7. Structure and Form |

Structure is the roadmap of a piece of music. Recognising sections and how they repeat or contrast with each other helps you follow the musical narrative. Composers use standard forms to organise their ideas in a way listeners can understand.

Binary form (AB) has two contrasting sections, often both repeated. Ternary form (ABA) returns to the opening section after a contrasting middle. Rondo form (ABACA) keeps returning to a recurring main theme in between contrasting episodes. Theme and variations takes a main theme and changes it in successive variations through alterations in tempo, rhythm, harmony, instrumentation or style. Pop songs often follow verse-chorus form with an intro, bridge and outro. At KS3 you will compose short pieces in these forms, understanding how repetition provides familiarity and contrast creates interest.

8. Instruments and Ensembles |

Knowing the main instrument families and how they produce sound helps you describe timbre and select suitable sounds for composition. Ensembles combine instruments in different ways to create a huge palette of colours.

Orchestral instruments are grouped into four main families. Strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass) produce sound by bowing, plucking or striking strings. Woodwind (flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon) create vibrations by blowing across an edge or using a reed. Brass (trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba) use lip vibration against a mouthpiece. Percussion includes tuned instruments (timpani, xylophone) and untuned (snare drum, cymbals). The modern orchestra is a large symphony ensemble. Smaller groupings include string quartet, wind quintet and jazz band. At KS3 you also explore classroom percussion, keyboards and ukulele, often playing as a whole-class ensemble or in small bands. Describing timbre using words like 'bright', 'mellow', 'reedy' or 'brassy' becomes part of your vocabulary.

9. Music Notation Basics |

Reading and writing music is like learning a new language. At KS3 you build on the treble clef and begin to work with the bass clef, accidentals and a wider range of rhythmic notation. Accurate notation allows your musical ideas to be shared clearly.

The stave (five lines) gives a grid for pitch. The treble clef fixes the second line as G. Notes in treble clef spaces spell F A C E; lines are E G B D F (Every Good Boy Deserves Football). The bass clef fixes the fourth line as F; space notes are A C E G (All Cows Eat Grass) and lines are G B D F A (Great Big Dreams For America). Accidentals: a sharp (♯) raises a note by a semitone, a flat (♭) lowers it and a natural (♮) cancels a previous accidental. Key signatures gather the sharps or flats needed for the scale at the start of each line. Time signatures and note values (covered earlier) are placed on the stave. At KS3 you practise notating short melodies and rhythms, using bar lines, repeat signs and dynamic markings. Basic graphic scores may also be used for contemporary sounds.

高音谱表间里的音拼成 F A C E;线上音为 E G B D F(可用“Every Good Boy Deserves Football”记忆)。 A C E G(All Cows Eat Grass),线上音 G B D F A(Great Big Dreams For America)。

10. Music Through Time and Around the World | 音乐的时间与地域之旅

KS3 Edexcel introduces you to music from different historical periods and global cultures. This broadens your listening experience and shows how the elements of music are used in many different ways.

Key Western periods include: Baroque (approx. 1600–1750) featuring harpsichord, ornate melodies and composers like Bach and Handel; Classical (approx. 1750–1820) with clear structures, balanced phrases and composers such as Mozart and Haydn; Romantic (approx. 1820–1900) emphasising emotion, large orchestras and dramatic contrasts, represented by Tchaikovsky and Brahms; and 20th Century onwards introducing minimalism, jazz influences, electronic music and experimentation. World music topics often include African drumming: polyrhythms, call and response, and the djembe; Gamelan from Indonesia: metallophones and gongs creating interlocking patterns; Indian classical music: raga (melody), tala (rhythm) and instruments like sitar and tabla; and Samba from Brazil: layered percussion and energetic carnival beats. By comparing these traditions, you learn that all music, however different, uses the same basic elements in unique combinations. This builds a deep respect for musical diversity and inspires your own creative work.
