📚 Saudi Arabia: Land, Oil and Modern Transformation |
Saudi Arabia is one of the most influential countries in the Middle East and, because of its oil wealth and its two holy cities, one of the most widely discussed countries in the world. This article sets out the country's location, physical geography, history, oil economy, reform programme and the controversies that surround it, using the Kingdom as a case study for A-Level Geography and Economics.
1. An Overview of the Kingdom |
Saudi Arabia, officially the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is an Asian country occupying the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, covering roughly four-fifths of the peninsula's landmass. It borders Jordan, Iraq and Kuwait to the north, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to the east, and Oman and Yemen to the south. The Red Sea lies to the west and the Persian Gulf to the east, giving the country around 2,600 km of coastline. Riyadh is the capital and the largest city, while Jeddah is the main commercial port on the Red Sea. The modern Kingdom was founded in 1932 by King Abdulaziz Al Saud, and it is governed as an absolute monarchy.
2. Land Area, Terrain and Natural Resources |
With a total area of roughly 2.15 million km², Saudi Arabia is the 13th largest country in the world. Its terrain is dominated by desert: the Rub' al Khali, or Empty Quarter, is the largest continuous sand desert on Earth, covering about 650,000 km², while the An-Nafud desert lies further north. Along the western side, the Hijaz and Asir mountains rise steeply from the narrow Tihamah coastal plain, and the highest peak, Jabal Sawda, reaches close to 3,000 m. The country has no permanent rivers. Beneath the surface, however, lie enormous natural resources: the world's largest proven oil reserves, large gas fields, and deposits of gold, phosphate, bauxite and copper.

3. Climate and Water Scarcity |
Saudi Arabia has a hot desert climate. Summer daytime temperatures commonly reach 40-45 °C, and inland areas can exceed 50 °C, while winters are mild, with daytime highs of about 15-25 °C. Average annual rainfall is below 100 mm over most of the country, and the Empty Quarter is hyper-arid; only the Asir highlands in the south-west receive appreciably more rain. Because there are no permanent rivers or lakes, the country depends heavily on desalination and on fossil groundwater. Saudi Arabia is one of the world's largest producers of desalinated water, and water scarcity is a central constraint on agriculture, industry and urban growth.
4. Ancient History and Early Civilisations |
Saudi Arabia's history and cultural tradition go back a very long way. Its civilisation can be traced at least to the 6th century BC, when a series of kingdoms arose in the south of the Arabian Peninsula. Among them were Saba, often identified with the biblical Sheba, together with Ma'in, Qataban and Hadhramaut. These states grew rich on the frankincense and myrrh trade, sending caravans northwards to the Mediterranean. Even earlier, Dilmun and Magan were linked to trade networks with Mesopotamia. In the north-west, the Nabataean kingdom left the spectacular rock-cut tombs of Hegra, now better known as Mada'in Salih.
5. The Birth of Islam and the Two Holy Cities |
With the emergence of Islam in the 7th century CE, the region became the birthplace of a world religion and its spiritual heartland. The Prophet Muhammad was born in Mecca around 570 CE and received the first revelation around 610 CE; in 622 CE he migrated to Medina, an event that marks the start of the Islamic calendar. Mecca is home to the Kaaba and the Great Mosque, and Medina to the Prophet's Mosque. The Hajj pilgrimage, one of the Five Pillars of Islam, draws close to two million worshippers from around the world in a normal year, while the Umrah can be performed at any time. The Saudi monarch traditionally holds the title Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.
6. Oil Reserves, Production and Fiscal Revenue |
Saudi Arabia is a country made rich by oil. It holds the world's largest proven oil reserves, estimated at around 267 billion barrels, roughly one-sixth of the global total, and its production ranks among the highest in the world, typically 9-10 million barrels per day with a sustainable capacity of about 12 million barrels per day. Commercial production began in 1938 at the Dammam No. 7 well, and the giant Ghawar field remains the largest conventional oil field ever discovered. The state-owned company Saudi Aramco controls most upstream output and listed a small share on the stock exchange in 2019. Hydrocarbons generate roughly 40% of GDP, around three-quarters of export earnings and the majority of government revenue.
7. OPEC, Pricing Power and the Economics of Oil | OPEC、
Saudi Arabia was a founding member of OPEC, created in 1960 by Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Iran, Iraq and Kuwait. As the group's largest producer and holder of most spare capacity, the Kingdom acts as the de facto leader and "swing producer", able to raise or cut output to influence world prices; since 2016 it has coordinated with Russia and others under the so-called OPEC+ framework. For economists, this is a classic cartel case: restricting supply to push price above the competitive level, undermined by cheating, by non-member supply and by the price elasticity of demand. Oil dependence also brings the risks of Dutch disease and the resource curse, and the government's fiscal breakeven oil price is often estimated at around US$80 per barrel.
