📚 Kuwait: Geography, Oil Wealth and Culture |
Kuwait, officially the State of Kuwait, sits in the north-eastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula. It is a small but enormously influential Arab state whose story brings together desert geography, a long trading and pearling heritage, a deeply Islamic culture, and one of the world's most oil-dependent economies. This article walks through Kuwait's location, physical geography, history, culture, economy and tourist highlights, and then shows how the country can be used as a powerful case study for A-Level Geography and Economics.
1. Where Is Kuwait? Location and Borders |
Kuwait faces the Persian Gulf to the east, shares its northern and north-western border with Iraq, and its southern and south-western border with Saudi Arabia. The country covers roughly 17,818 km², making it slightly smaller than Slovenia. The capital, Kuwait City, sits on a natural deep-water bay, which explains why the settlement grew into a regional trading and pearling port long before oil was discovered.
Its position at the head of the Gulf gives Kuwait two advantages that examiners love to see mentioned: it controls a sheltered anchorage on a major maritime route, and it lies within easy reach of the huge oil fields that straddle the Kuwait-Saudi-Iraq border zone.

Three quick facts worth memorising: Kuwait is a founding member of OPEC, its currency is one of the highest-valued in the world, and almost the entire population lives in the coastal belt around Kuwait City.
2. Physical Geography and Climate |
Kuwait is essentially a flat desert plain sloping gently from the south-west towards the Gulf. There are no rivers or lakes, and no permanent surface freshwater. The landscape is dominated by sand sheets, gravel deserts and low ridges, with the Kuwait Bay cutting deeply into the coastline. Groundwater is brackish, so the country depends on desalination for most of its drinking water.
The climate is a hot desert climate (BWh in the Köppen classification). Summers are extremely hot and dry, with daytime temperatures commonly between 40 °C and 46 °C, and the highest recorded readings above 50 °C. Winters are mild, with temperatures roughly between 8 °C and 20 °C. Annual rainfall is only about 100–120 mm, falling almost entirely between November and April.
Summer mean maximum ≈ 45 °C | Winter mean minimum ≈ 8 °C | Annual rainfall ≈ 100–120 mm
Two hazards recur in exam answers: shamal winds that trigger severe dust storms, reducing visibility and damaging infrastructure, and occasional heavy winter rainstorms that cause flash flooding in urban areas with poor drainage. Water scarcity is the single most important physical constraint on Kuwait's development.
No rivers or lakes; desalination supplies the great majority of potable water.
Dust storms reduce visibility and damage crops, roads and machinery.
Extreme heat raises electricity demand for air conditioning, adding pressure on the energy system.
3. A Short History of Kuwait |
The area has been inhabited for millennia. Failaka Island, off Kuwait City, was a Dilmun trading outpost in the Bronze Age and later a Hellenistic settlement known as Ikaros. Modern Kuwait traces its political origins to the mid-eighteenth century, when the Bani Utub tribal confederation settled around the bay and a small trading sheikhdom emerged, traditionally dated to 1756.
Before oil, Kuwait's wealth came from maritime trade, shipbuilding, fishing and pearling. The pearl market collapsed in the 1930s because of the global depression and competition from Japanese cultured pearls, pushing the economy towards crisis just as oil was being discovered.
Oil was struck in commercial quantities at Burgan in 1938, and the first crude exports left the country in 1946. Kuwait became a British protectorate in 1899, gained full independence on 19 June 1961, and was a founding member of OPEC in 1960. In August 1990 Iraqi forces invaded and occupied the country; it was liberated on 26 February 1991 after a United Nations-authorised coalition campaign, a date still marked as Liberation Day.
1756 — emergence of the Al-Sabah-led sheikhdom.
1899 — British protectorate agreement.
1938 / 1946 — discovery and first export of oil.
1960 / 1961 — founding member of OPEC; independence.
1990–1991 — invasion, occupation and liberation.
4. People, Religion and Society |
Kuwait's population is small and extremely urbanised. Roughly 4.3–4.9 million people live in the country, but only around one third are Kuwaiti citizens; the rest are expatriate workers drawn mainly from South and South-East Asia and other Arab countries. This demographic imbalance is a distinctive feature of the Gulf states and an important discussion point in migration and labour-market questions.
Islam is the official religion and shapes daily life. The majority of citizens are Sunni Muslims, with a substantial Shia minority. Arabic is the official language, while English is widely used in business, banking and higher education. Call to prayer, the Friday weekend and the lunar calendar all structure the rhythm of the week, and Ramadan noticeably changes working hours and public life.
Education and health care are provided free to citizens, literacy is high at above 95%, and Kuwait consistently ranks as a "very high human development" country on the Human Development Index. Traditional values still carry real weight: religion, family reputation and social standing strongly influence personal decisions.
5. Culture, Traditions and Daily Life | 文化、传统与日常生活
Kuwaiti culture prizes family above almost everything else. Extended families remain close, elders are treated with marked respect, and major decisions are usually discussed within the family rather than taken individually. Hospitality is a duty: guests are welcomed with Arabic coffee (gahwa) flavoured with cardamom and saffron, served in small cups, alongside dates.
The diwaniya is a central social institution — a regular gathering, traditionally male, held in a dedicated room of the house or a separate hall, where politics, business and community matters are discussed. It functions as an informal network that complements formal institutions and is often cited as a pillar of Kuwaiti civic life.
Traditional dress remains visible. Men wear the dishdasha with a head covering (ghutra) held by a cord (agal); women commonly wear the black abaya, and many also wear the hijab. Kuwaiti cuisine blends Bedouin, Persian, Indian and Levantine influences — machboos (spiced rice with chicken, lamb or fish), jireesh, harees and mutabbaq are staples, and fresh fish from the Gulf is widely eaten.
Greet with a handshake between people of the same gender; avoid physical contact across genders unless invited.
Use the right hand for eating and for giving or receiving items.
Remove shoes when entering a home or a mosque, and dress modestly in public.
During Ramadan, do not eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight hours.
Avoid pointing the soles of your feet at others, and avoid discussing politics or religion casually.
6. Oil: The Backbone of the Economy |
Kuwait holds roughly 100 billion barrels of proven oil reserves — around 6% of the world total — and the Burgan field, discovered in 1938, is among the largest oil fields ever found. The state oil company, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, is vertically integrated: it explores, produces, refines, ships and retails through its own network of petrol stations abroad.
Oil dominates every macroeconomic indicator. Hydrocarbons generate roughly 90% of government revenue, about half of GDP, and the overwhelming majority of export earnings. Because the economy is so concentrated, movements in the world oil price feed almost directly into the government budget, business confidence and household incomes.
Downstream capacity has also expanded. Kuwait's three refineries at Al-Ahmadi, Mina Abdullah and the newer Al-Zour complex together give the country refining capacity of well over one million barrels per day, allowing it to export higher-value refined products rather than only crude.
Oil ≈ 90% of government revenue | ≈ 50% of GDP | ≈ 90%+ of exports
7. Wealth, Welfare and Living Standards |
Kuwait is one of the wealthiest countries in the world per head of population. GDP per capita is roughly USD 30,000–35,000 in nominal terms, and the Kuwaiti dinar is among the strongest currencies on earth, trading at about three US dollars per dinar. The state provides free education and health care, subsidised fuel, electricity and water, and generous public-sector employment.
The Kuwait Investment Authority, established in 1953 and therefore the world's oldest sovereign wealth fund, manages these savings. A fixed share of oil revenue — commonly about 10% — is transferred each year into the Future Generations Fund, an explicit attempt to convert exhaustible oil wealth into financial assets for the day when the oil runs out.
The welfare model is not without strains. Citizens enjoy guaranteed public-sector jobs and high salaries, but the public wage bill absorbs a very large share of the budget, subsidies distort prices and encourage wasteful energy use, and expatriate workers — the majority of the labour force — do not enjoy the same benefits. These tensions are central to the reform debate.
