1. Weather vs Climate |
One of the most common mistakes at KS3 is to treat weather and climate as the same thing. Weather describes short-term atmospheric conditions: what you experience when you look out of the window today or this week. Climate is the long-term average of weather patterns in a region, typically based on at least 30 years of data.
Weather is measured using elements such as temperature (°C), precipitation (mm), wind speed and direction, humidity (%) and air pressure (hPa or mb). Climate is described using the same elements, but as averages, ranges and seasonal patterns. A climate graph showing average monthly temperature and rainfall describes climate, not weather.
The confusion often appears when students say 'The climate was rainy yesterday' or 'A cold winter disproves global warming'. Correctly, a single rainy day is weather; a pattern of wet winters over several decades may indicate climate. The phrase 'climate is what you expect, weather is what you get' helps reinforce this difference. A quick test: if the sentence contains a specific date or day, it is almost certainly weather.
|---|---|---|
| Time scale | 时间尺度 | Hours to days | 几小时到几天 | 30 years or more | 30 年及以上 |
| How it is described | 描述方式 | Actual values now | 当下的实际数值 | Averages and ranges | 平均值与变化幅度 |
| Example | 举例 | It rained for two hours today | 今天下了两小时雨 | The UK has wet winters and mild summers | 英国冬季多雨、夏季温和 |
How to fix it: whenever you write about weather or climate, add a time frame such as 'today', 'this week' or 'over the last 30 years'. Practise reading climate graphs and describing trends with words like average, range, seasonal and anomaly. Remind yourself that one cold winter is a single data point, not a trend.
2. Plate Tectonics: Continents Drift or Plates Move? |
A frequent error is to say that 'the continents drift around on top of the oceans' or that 'the plates are the continents'. In fact, the Earth's lithosphere (the crust plus the rigid uppermost mantle) is broken into tectonic plates that contain both continental crust and oceanic crust. The plates move slowly over the asthenosphere, a hot, mostly solid layer of the upper mantle that deforms extremely slowly.
The mantle is not a liquid ocean of magma. It is mostly solid rock; convection currents within it transfer heat and are one of the driving forces of plate movement, along with slab pull and ridge push. Oceanic crust is basaltic, thinner and denser, while continental crust is granitic, thicker and less dense, which is why oceanic crust is subducted at destructive boundaries.
Another slip is confusing the three boundary types. At constructive (divergent) boundaries plates move apart and new crust forms, producing mid-ocean ridges and shield volcanoes. At destructive (convergent) boundaries plates collide, producing fold mountains, deep ocean trenches, composite volcanoes and powerful earthquakes. At conservative (transform) boundaries plates slide past each other, so earthquakes occur but volcanoes usually do not.
Remember that the UK sits on the Eurasian Plate, far from any plate boundary today. This is why the UK has no active volcanoes and only occasional, usually small, earthquakes. The 1931 Dogger Bank earthquake was an intraplate event along an ancient fault, not evidence that the UK sits on a plate margin.
3. 'Earthquakes and Volcanoes Only Happen at Plate Boundaries' | "地震和火山只发生在板块边界"
Most earthquakes and volcanoes do occur at plate boundaries, but 'most' is not 'all'. Hotspot volcanoes such as the Hawaiian Islands and Yellowstone form above mantle plumes in the middle of plates, far from any margin. Intraplate earthquakes also occur along ancient faults, for example in central and eastern parts of the USA and across northern Europe.
A second and more damaging misconception is that 'the bigger the earthquake, the more people die'. Impacts depend on wealth and building codes, population density, the time of day, the level of preparation and planning, and secondary hazards such as tsunamis, landslides, liquefaction and fires. A moderate earthquake in a poorly built, crowded city can kill far more people than a stronger one in a well-prepared, sparsely populated area.
Do not confuse magnitude with intensity either. Magnitude measures the energy released at the focus and is recorded on the moment
