📚 A-Level AQA Science: The Human Body – Key Concepts | A-Level AQA
The human body is a complex, integrated system of organs and processes that work together to maintain life. In AQA A-Level Science, particularly the Biology specification, a detailed understanding of human physiology is essential. From the molecular level up to whole-body coordination, you need to grasp how structure relates to function, how homeostasis is maintained, and how the body responds to internal and external changes. This article brings together the key topics you must master, presenting them in a clear, exam-focused way with paired English–Chinese explanations.
1. Levels of Organisation |
In the human body, cells are the basic structural and functional units. Similar cells are grouped into tissues, such as epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue and nervous tissue. Tissues form organs like the heart, lungs and stomach. Organs work together in organ systems, for example the digestive system, circulatory system and respiratory system. Understanding these levels helps you see the body as a hierarchy of increasing complexity, a fundamental theme in AQA exams.
Exam questions often ask you to identify the tissue type that lines the trachea (ciliated epithelium) or the muscle type in the gut wall (smooth muscle). Make sure you can link the structural features of each tissue to its specific function.
2. The Circulatory System |
ular pump with four chambers: right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium and left ventricle. The left ventricle has a thicker wall because it must pump blood at high pressure around the whole body. Valves prevent backflow and ensure unidirectional blood flow.
Blood vessels include arteries, veins and capillaries. Arteries have thick, elastic walls to withstand high pressure; veins have thinner walls and valves; capillaries have walls just one cell thick to allow efficient exchange of substances. The composition of blood – plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets – is another frequently tested topic. Remember that red blood cells lack a nucleus and contain haemoglobin for oxygen transport.
3. Gas Exchange and Respiration |
Gas exchange in humans occurs in the alveoli of the lungs. The alveoli provide a large surface area, are thin-walled, and are surrounded by a dense network of capillaries. This maximises the rate of diffusion for oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide out. Ventilation is the process of breathing in (inspiration) and out (expiration). During inspiration, the diaphragm contracts and flattens, the intercostal muscles contract, the ribcage moves up and out, and lung volume increases, creating a pressure drop that draws air in.
ces lactate. The equation for aerobic respiration is: C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O (+ ATP).
4. Digestion and Absorption |
Digestion breaks down large, insoluble food molecules into small, soluble ones that can be absorbed. The process involves physical breakdown (chewing, stomach churning) and chemical digestion by enzymes. Amylase in the mouth and small intestine hydrolyses starch into maltose. Proteases like pepsin in the stomach and trypsin in the small intestine break proteins into amino acids. Lipase, aided by bile salts, digests fats into fatty acids and glycerol. Bile is produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder; it emulsifies fats and neutralises stomach acid.
Absorption mainly takes place in the small intestine, specifically the ileum. The ileum wall is folded into villi, and each epithelial cell has microvilli, giving a huge surface area. The epithelium is thin, rich in blood capillaries and a lacteal for lipid absorption. Co-transport mechanisms for glucose and amino acids are a key AQA topic: sodium ions are actively pumped out, creating a concentration gradient that drives glucose uptake via a symport protein.
5. The Nervous System |
The nervous system uses electrical impulses to bring about rapid, short-lived responses. Neurones are specialised cells that transmit nerve impulses. A reflex arc involves a receptor, sensory neurone, relay neurone (in the CNS), motor neurone and effector (muscle or gland). The synapse is the junction between two neurones. When an impulse arrives at the presynaptic terminal, neurotransmitters are released, diffuse across the synaptic cleft, and bind to receptors on the postsynaptic membrane. This may generate a new action potential if the threshold is reached.
The resting potential of a neurone is around -70 mV, maintained by the sodium-potassium pump and differential membrane permeability. During an action potential, depolarisation occurs when Na⁺ voltage-gated channels open, followed by repolarisation via K⁺ efflux. The refractory period ensures unidirectional propagation. Myelinated neurones conduct impulses faster through saltatory conduction.
6. Hormonal Coordination |
Hormones are chemical messengers produced by endocrine glands and transported in the blood to target organs. Compared with nervous communication, hormonal responses are slower but longer lasting. The pancreas is both an endocrine and exocrine gland. The islets of Langerhans contain α-cells (secrete glucagon) and β-cells (secrete insulin). These hormones regulate blood glucose concentration through negative feedback.
When blood glucose rises, insulin promotes glycogenesis in the liver and increased glucose uptake by cells. When blood glucose falls, glucagon stimulates glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. Diabetes mellitus is caused by insufficient insulin production (type 1) or insulin resistance (type 2). AQA questions may present glucose tolerance test graphs for analysis.
Other hormones you must know include adrenaline (fight or flight response), ADH (osmoregulation) and sex hormones (reproduction). Each follows a stimulus-secretion-target-response pathway.
7. Homeostasis and Temperature Regulation |
Homeostasis is the maintenance of a stable internal environment within narrow limits, despite external changes. It relies on negative feedback systems that detect deviations from a set point and trigger corrective responses. Core body temperature in humans is maintained around 37 °C, the optimum for enzyme activity. Thermoregulation is coordinated by the hypothalamus, which receives signals from peripheral thermoreceptors and its own central receptors.
When body temperature rises, responses include vasodilation (arterioles near skin surface dilate, so more blood flows close to the skin and heat is lost by radiation) and increased sweating (evaporation of sweat cools the skin). When temperature falls, vasoconstriction occurs, shivering generates heat by muscle contraction, and hair erector muscles contract to trap insulating air (though minor in humans). Behavioural responses also play a role.
8. Excretion and the Kidneys |
Excretion is the removal of metabolic waste products. The lungs excrete CO₂, the skin excretes some urea and salts through sweat, but the kidneys are the main excretory organs, removing urea, excess water and ions. Each kidney contains around one million nephrons, the functional units. Each nephron consists of the Bowman’s capsule, glomerulus, proximal convoluted tubule (PCT), loop of Henle, distal convoluted tubule (DCT) and collecting duct.
Ultrafiltration occurs at the glomerulus: blood pressure forces small molecules (water, glucose, ions, urea) into the Bowman’s capsule, while larger proteins and cells remain in the blood. Selective reabsorption takes place mainly in the PCT, where all glucose, most amino acids and some ions are actively reabsorbed back into the blood. Water follows by osmosis. The loop of Henle creates a concentration gradient in the medulla, allowing the collecting duct to reabsorb water under the influence of ADH. In the DCT, further ion balancing occurs.
9. The Immune Response |
The immune system defends the body against pathogens. Phagocytosis is the first line of cellular defence: phagocytes, such as neutrophils and macrophages, engulf and digest pathogens in a non-specific manner. The specific immune response involves lymphocytes. T-lymphocytes (T-cells) are involved in cell-mediated immunity: they are activated by antigen-presenting cells, and helper T-cells stimulate other immune cells. Cytotoxic T-cells destroy infected cells.
B-lymphocytes are responsible for humoral immunity. When a B-cell binds to its specific antigen, it is activated (often with T-helper cell help) and divides to form plasma cells and memory cells. Plasma cells secrete antibodies that agglutinate pathogens or neutralise toxins. The secondary response to the same antigen is faster and stronger due to memory cells. This is the basis of vaccination.
Exam questions may ask you to describe the structure of an antibody (Y-shaped, variable region, constant region) and explain the difference between active and passive immunity. Herd immunity and antigenic variability are also relevant topics.
10. Reproduction and Development |
Human reproduction involves the fusion of male and female gametes. Spermatogenesis occurs in the seminiferous tubules of the testes, while oogenesis develops in the ovaries. The menstrual cycle is controlled by hormones: FSH stimulates follicle development and oestrogen secretion; oestrogen triggers a surge in LH, which causes ovulation; after ovulation, the corpus luteum secretes progesterone, which maintains the uterine lining. If fertilisation does not occur, progesterone levels fall, leading to menstruation.
Fertilisation usually occurs in the oviduct. The zygote undergoes cleavage and implants into the endometrium. The placenta forms, allowing exchange of nutrients, gases and waste between mother and foetus without mixing blood. During pregnancy, HCG is produced to maintain the corpus luteum. Birth involves positive feedback: cervical stretching triggers oxytocin release, which enhances contractions.
