📚 IGCSE CCEA Business: Globalisation Key Revision Points | IGCSE CCEA
In today's interconnected world, globalisation is a fundamental concept that every IGCSE CCEA Business student must master. It shapes how businesses expand, compete, and respond to international opportunities and threats. This revision guide breaks down all key topics, from multinational corporations to ethical dilemmas, helping you succeed in your exam.
1. Defining Globalisation |
Globalisation is the process by which the world's economies, societies and cultures become more integrated through increasing cross-border movement of goods, services, capital, people and technology. It means that events in one country can have rapid effects on businesses and consumers worldwide.
For businesses, globalisation transforms local markets into international ones, creating both new opportunities and intense competition. It can be measured by rising international trade as a percentage of GDP, growth in foreign direct investment (FDI), and the expansion of multinational corporations.
A useful way to remember the scope of globalisation is the four flows: goods and services, money (capital), people (migration and labour mobility) and information (technology and data). Each flow creates business opportunities and pressures at the same time.
2. Measuring Globalisation |
Globalisation is not just a feeling or a slogan - it can be measured using economic indicators. Examiners often ask you to identify or interpret these indicators, so learn both the name and what it actually shows.
| Indicator | 指标 | What it shows | 说明 |
| Trade as a % of GDP | 贸易占 GDP 比重 | How open an economy is to international trade | 衡量一国经济对国际贸易的开放程度 |
| FDI inflows and outflows | FDI 流入与流出 | Investment by firms in productive assets abroad | 企业在海外生产性资产上的投资 |
| Number of MNCs | 跨国公司数量 | The spread of firms operating in more than one country | 在多个国家经营的企业扩散程度 |
| Internet and mobile use | 互联网与移动通信普及率 | Speed of information and e-commerce flows | 信息与电商流动的速度 |
A common exam calculation is percentage change, which shows how fast trade or FDI has grown over a period.
Percentage change = ((New value − Original value) ÷ Original value) × 100%
3. Drivers of Globalisation |
Several forces have pushed globalisation forward. The most important are technology, trade liberalisation and political change.
Technology has cut the cost of communication and transport dramatically. The internet allows a small firm in Belfast to sell to customers in Asia, while container shipping and air freight make moving physical goods cheaper and faster than ever before.
Trade liberalisation means governments have reduced barriers such as tariffs and quotas, and joined organisations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO). Lower barriers make exporting and importing easier and cheaper.
Political change also matters: the opening up of large economies such as China and India, and the end of the Cold War, brought hundreds of millions of workers and consumers into the global market. Other drivers include rising consumer demand for foreign brands, lower labour costs abroad, and the search for new resources.
4. Multinational Corporations (MNCs) |
A multinational corporation is a business that has its headquarters in one country but operates, produces or sells in at least one other country. Well-known examples include Apple, Toyota, Unilever and Nissan, which has a major plant in Sunderland in the UK.
Firms become MNCs for four main reasons: to reach new markets and customers, to reduce costs by using cheaper labour or raw materials, to access natural resources, and to gain strategic assets such as brands, technology or skilled workers.
| Benefits of being an MNC | 成为跨国公司的好处 | Drawbacks | 弊端 |
| Larger market, higher sales and profits | 市场更大,销售与利润更高 | Complex coordination and communication | 协调与沟通复杂 |
| Economies of scale reduce unit costs | 规模经济降低单位成本 | Exposure to exchange rate risk | 面临汇率风险 |
| Access to skills and technology | 获得技能与技术 | Criticism over pay, conditions and tax | 在薪酬、劳动条件与纳税方面受批评 |
For the host country, an MNC can bring jobs, tax revenue, training and new technology. However, it may also dominate local competitors, send profits back home, and move production elsewhere if costs rise.
5. Opportunities Globalisation Creates for Businesses |
The clearest opportunity is a much larger market. A firm that once served one town can now sell nationally and internationally, spreading fixed costs over more units and lowering average cost.
Globalisation also allows firms to buy inputs more cheaply. Components, raw materials and services can be sourced from whichever country offers the best combination of price, quality and reliability, improving both cost competitiveness and product quality.
Diversifying across countries can reduce risk: if demand falls in one market, sales in another may hold up. Global brands also enjoy marketing benefits, since a strong reputation built in one country can support entry into another.
Finally, international competition forces firms to innovate. Facing global rivals encourages investment in design, technology and customer service, which can raise productivity and long-term competitiveness.
6. Threats and Drawbacks of Globalisation |
The most immediate threat for many businesses is stronger competition. Imported goods may be cheaper, and large MNCs often enjoy lower costs and stronger brands than small local firms.
Globalisation also increases vulnerability. Firms depend on foreign suppliers, so a port strike, natural disaster or political conflict can disrupt supply and raise costs. Exchange rate movements can turn a profitable export order into a loss.
For workers and communities, the drawbacks include job losses when production moves abroad, pressure on wages, and the risk that a local economy becomes dependent on a single foreign employer. Critics also argue that globalisation can widen inequality between rich and poor countries and within countries.
For consumers, however, the picture is mixed but often positive: more choice, lower prices and faster access to new products, though quality and ethical standards may vary.
7. Competition: Local Firms versus International Rivals |
When a market opens up, local firms must decide how to compete. They can compete on price, but this is difficult against MNCs with economies of scale, so many choose differentiation instead.
Differentiation may include better customer service, faster delivery, local knowledge, customised products, ethical sourcing or a strong local identity. Small firms can also exploit niche markets that are too small to interest a large MNC.
Government support can also help local firms survive, through grants, training schemes, export advice or procurement policies. In the UK, for example, small businesses can access support to begin exporting.
Evaluation point: whether competition is a threat or an opportunity depends on the firm's cost base, brand strength, flexibility and the speed of the market change. A firm with a strong niche and loyal customers may actually benefit from greater international attention to its market.
8. Global Supply Chains, Outsourcing and Offshoring |
A supply chain is the sequence of activities from raw materials to the final customer. Globalisation has made supply chains international, so a single product may contain parts made in several countries.
Outsourcing means contracting work to an external business, often abroad. Offshoring means moving a business activity to another country, whether the work is done by the firm itself or by a contractor. Reshoring is the reverse: bringing activity back home.
The main advantages are lower costs, access to specialist skills, greater flexibility and the ability to focus on core activities. The main risks are loss of quality control, longer lead times, communication problems, ethical criticism and dependence on a supplier that may fail.
9. Ethical, Environmental and Social Issues |
Globalisation raises difficult ethical questions. Businesses may be tempted to use suppliers in countries with weak labour laws, low pay or poor safety records in order to cut costs.
Common issues include child labour, excessive working hours, unsafe factories, environmental damage and the use of conflict minerals. Environmental concerns include carbon emissions from long-distance transport and pollution from production.
These issues matter commercially as well as morally. Poor practice can lead to consumer boycotts, negative press, damage to brand image, lost contracts and legal penalties. Many firms now publish ethical sourcing policies, audit suppliers and join certification schemes.
Evaluation point: acting ethically often raises costs in the short term, which may reduce competitiveness. However, it can build customer loyalty and reduce long-term risk, so the decision depends on the target market and the values of the firm's customers.
10. Government Policy, Trade Blocs and Protectionism |
Governments shape globalisation through trade policy. Free trade means few barriers, while protectionism means using measures to restrict imports and protect domestic firms.
Protectionist measures include tariffs (taxes on imports), quotas (limits on quantity), subsidies to domestic producers, embargoes, and administrative rules such as strict product standards and licensing.
A trade bloc is a group of countries that agree to reduce or remove barriers between members, such as the European Union and its single market, or USMCA. Membership gives firms access to a larger market with common rules, but also means accepting common standards and, sometimes, free movement of labour.
Evaluation point: protectionism can save jobs and help infant industries grow, but it raises prices for consumers, reduces choice and may provoke retaliation from trading partners, which can harm exporters.
11. Exam Skills: Command Words and Structure |
CCEA questions reward students who use the correct command word. Describe means give the main features; explain means give reasons and link them to consequences; analyse means break the issue into parts and show relationships; evaluate means weigh both sides and reach a supported judgement.
A reliable paragraph structure is: point, application to the case, analysis of the effect, and evaluation. Application is vital - a strong answer uses the context given in the question, such as a named business, country or figure.
Useful evaluation phrases include: "However, this depends on...", "In the short term... but in the long term...", "The most important factor is... because...". These show judgement rather than simply listing ideas.
However, this depends on...""In the short term... but in the long term...""The most important factor is... because..."。
When data is given, calculate carefully and comment on the result. For example, if a firm's overseas sales rise from £20m to £25m, the percentage change is ((25 − 20) ÷ 20) × 100% = 25%, and you should then explain what that growth means for cash flow, capacity and risk.
12. Quick Revision Checklist and Common Mistakes |
Before the exam, check that you can define globalisation, FDI, MNC, outsourcing, offshoring, protectionism and trade bloc without hesitating. If you cannot, revise those terms first, because they appear in almost every question on this topic.
Make sure you can give at least two benefits and two drawbacks of globalisation for a business, a consumer and a government, and that you can support each with a reason or an example. Balance is what earns evaluation marks.
Common mistakes to avoid: writing everything you know instead of answering the question; describing instead of evaluating; ignoring the case study; confusing outsourcing with offshoring; and forgetting to reach a conclusion in longer answers.
Finally, remember that globalisation is a two-sided process. The best answers explain both the opportunities it creates and the pressures it imposes, then judge which effect is likely to matter most in the context given.
