1. Mock Test Overview |
This unit test is designed to mirror the style of CIE AS-Level History Paper 1 (source analysis) and Paper 2 (essay) in a condensed format. The theme is the origins of the Cold War, 1941-1950, a popular option. The test contains two sections: Section A features two primary sources and asks for inference and comparison, worth 12 marks; Section B presents an essay question on Soviet expansionism, worth 25 marks. The total time suggested is 60 minutes. The sources and question stems follow typical CIE phrasing.
|---|---|---|---|
| A, Question 1 | Inference from Source A | 6 | 10 min |
| A, Question 2 | Compare and contrast Sources A and B | 6 | 10 min |
| B, Question 3 | Essay on Soviet expansionism, 1945-1949 | 25 | 35 min |
The two sources are deliberately contrasting: Source A is an extract from Churchill's 'Iron Curtain' speech at Fulton, Missouri, 5 March 1946; Source B is an extract from the Novikov Telegram sent to Moscow in September 1946, describing American intentions after the Second World War.
2. Section A, Question 1: Inference from a Source |
The question stem reads: 'What can you infer from Source A about Churchill's view of Soviet policy in Europe? Explain your answer using the source.' The command word is 'infer', which means you must go beyond what the source literally states and reach a conclusion about the author's meaning, attitude or expectation.
A strong response might read: 'Source A suggests that Churchill regarded Soviet policy as an expansionist threat to the whole of Europe rather than a limited security measure. The image of an "iron curtain" descending "from Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic" implies that he saw a permanent political division being imposed by force. His reference to "police governments" suggests he believed Soviet control was maintained through coercion rather than genuine consent.'
Do not paraphrase line by line; each inference should be a judgement supported by a short quotation or precise detail.
Use analytical verbs: implies, suggests, indicates, reveals, conveys, highlights.
Aim for two or three developed inferences rather than five underdeveloped ones.
3. Section A, Question 2: Comparing Two Sources |
The question asks: 'Compare and contrast the views expressed in Sources A and B about the post-war settlement in Europe.' Because the instruction is 'compare and contrast', marks are awarded for both similarities and differences. A response that only lists differences can never reach the top band.
A comparison point might be worded: 'Whereas Churchill presents Soviet policy as the aggressive source of division, Novikov presents American economic power as the aggressive source, arguing that the United States is seeking world supremacy through "dollar imperialism". Both sources, however, share a conviction that the other side is acting offensively rather than defensively.'
Organise by theme, not by source: one paragraph on the nature of the threat, one on economic policy, one on responsibility for division.
Use signposting language: 'Both sources agree that...', 'The key difference lies in...', 'Source A emphasises... whereas Source B...'.
Every comparison must be anchored in a short quotation or a precise reference from both sources.
4. Evaluating Provenance, Purpose and Tone |
Marks in Paper 1 are also awarded for evaluating why a source says what it says. Provenance is not simply the name and date; it is the relationship between the author's position, their audience and their purpose. Churchill was speaking as a former wartime leader addressing an American audience in a university setting, aiming to persuade the United States to remain engaged in Europe.
The Novikov Telegram, by contrast, was an internal diplomatic report to Stalin and Molotov. Its purpose was to justify firm Soviet control over Eastern Europe as a defensive response to American economic penetration, so it may exaggerate the coherence and hostility of American intentions.
Ask four questions of every source: who wrote it, when, for whom, and why.
Link purpose to reliability: 'This source is useful for revealing Soviet perceptions, but it cannot be treated as a neutral account of American policy.'
Use the CIE formula of usefulness plus limitation rather than simply labelling a source 'biased' and moving on.
5. Section B: Planning the Essay |
The essay question is: 'Assess the view that Soviet expansionism was the main cause of the Cold War in the years 1945-1949.' The command word 'assess' requires you to weigh competing explanations and reach a supported judgement, not merely to describe what happened.
A five-minute plan should identify three or four causes: Soviet expansion in Eastern Europe and pressures on Iran and Turkey; American policy responses such as the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan; mutual misunderstanding and the security dilemma over Germany and the atomic bomb; and ideological incompatibility between communism and capitalism.
Write your thesis in one sentence at the top of the plan, then list the topic sentences beneath it.
Decide your line of argument before you write: strong Soviet responsibility, shared responsibility, or structural causes such as the security dilemma.
Allocate one paragraph to each cause, and include a counter-argument paragraph plus a conclusion.
6. Introductions That Earn Marks |
An effective introduction is three or four sentences long. It should define the period and the issue, state the criterion by which you will judge the competing explanations, and announce your overall position. Contextual narrative about the Yalta and Potsdam Conferences belongs in the body, not in the opening.
A model opening: 'The Cold War emerged between 1945 and 1949 as the wartime Grand Alliance collapsed into two hostile blocs. While Soviet expansionism in Eastern Europe was the most visible trigger of tension, the conflict is better explained as the product of a security dilemma in which each side's defensive measures were read as offensive by the other. This essay argues that Soviet actions were the primary cause, but that American policy and mutual misperception were essential conditions.'
Avoid sweeping statements such as 'the Cold War was inevitable' unless you immediately qualify and support them.
Do not waste words restating the question; engage with it directly.
7. Body Paragraphs: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link |
Each body paragraph should open with a clear topic sentence that advances the argument, then supply precise evidence, then explain how that evidence supports your case, and finally link back to the question. Explanation should occupy roughly half of the paragraph; a paragraph that is mostly narrative will sit in the middle bands.
Evidence to deploy accurately: the Truman Doctrine of March 1947 promising support to free peoples resisting subjugation; the Marshall Plan of June 1947 offering economic aid that Stalin forbade Eastern European states to accept; the Berlin Blockade from June 1948 to May 1949 and the Western airlift; the formation of NATO in April 1949 and Comecon in 1949 as institutional expressions of the two blocs.
Precision beats volume: 'March 1947' is worth more than 'the late 1940s'.
Use causal language: 'this intensified', 'this polarised', 'this entrenched', 'this accelerated'.
Avoid turning the essay into a chronology of events from 1917 onwards; stay inside the stated period.
8. Counter-argument and Judgement |
Top-band essays do not simply assert a line; they acknowledge the strongest opposing case and then explain why it does not overturn their judgement. If you argue that Soviet expansionism was the main cause, you must engage seriously with the view that American economic and atomic power provoked Soviet insecurity.
The judgement need not be absolute. A nuanced conclusion can argue that Soviet expansionism determined the timing and geography of the conflict, while the security dilemma determined its intensity and duration. What matters is that the judgement follows logically from the evidence presented rather than appearing for the first time in the conclusion.
Use phrases such as 'to a large extent', 'this argument is persuasive but incomplete', 'the decisive factor remains'.
Never introduce a new example or a new cause in the conclusion.
9. Model Paragraph Analysis |
Consider this paragraph: 'Soviet expansionism was the most immediate trigger of the Cold War. Between 1945 and 1948, communist-dominated governments were established in Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia, and elections were manipulated or suppressed. This demonstrated to Western leaders that Stalin intended to secure a permanent buffer zone rather than honour the Declaration on Liberated Europe agreed at Yalta. Consequently, the Truman administration concluded that negotiation with Moscow was futile, which explains the shift to containment from 1947. Soviet actions, therefore, drove the escalation of tension, even if they were originally motivated by security concerns.'
The topic sentence states a position rather than a fact.
Evidence is specific: named states, a date range, a named agreement.
Explanation connects cause to consequence using 'consequently' and 'which explains'.
The final sentence links back to the question and adds nuance.
10. Common Pitfalls and the Marking Scheme |
The most frequent errors in mock scripts are predictable. Students describe the content of a source instead of inferring from it; they compare sources only in terms of what they agree on; they ignore provenance; and in essays they narrate the Berlin Blockade without explaining why it mattered as evidence for a particular cause.
|---|---|
| Level 1 (1-5) | Simple description or assertion; little or no supporting evidence; no judgement. |
| Level 2 (6-11) | Accurate knowledge but narrative in structure; explanation is implicit; limited judgement. |
| Level 3 (12-18) | Analytical explanation with relevant evidence; some evaluation of causes; a reasoned conclusion. |
| Level 4 (19-25) | Sustained and well-supported argument; competing explanations weighed; a clear, justified judgement throughout. |
Do not write outside the period given in the question; dates are part of the assessment objective.
Avoid retelling a source in the essay; sources belong to Section A.
Always finish the conclusion, even if it is only three lines.
11. Managing the Sixty Minutes |
The most common cause of lost marks in this paper is not ignorance but poor pacing. Students spend fifteen minutes on the first inference question, leaving too little time for the twenty-five mark essay, and then produce a rushed two-paragraph answer.
Minutes 0-2: read both sources and both question stems; underline command words.
Minutes 2-12: write the inference answer; aim for two developed inferences.
Minutes 12-22: write the comparison; organise by theme.
Minutes 22-27: plan the essay in note form.
Minutes 27-57: write the essay; allow roughly seven minutes per paragraph.
Minutes 57-60: proofread for date slips and unfinished sentences.
12. A Four-Week Revision Action Plan |
Turning this mock paper into real improvement requires deliberate practice. Use the diagnostic information from your marked script to decide which skill deserves the most attention: inference, comparison, evaluation of provenance, or essay structure.
Week 1: build a timeline card set for 1941-1950, including Yalta, Potsdam, the Long Telegram, the Novikov Telegram, the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, the Berlin Blockade and NATO.
