📚 Common Misconceptions in AS Cambridge Engineering and Their Corrections | AS
Engineering at AS Level introduces the core principles that underpin every engineering discipline: statics and mechanics, materials behaviour, electrical principles and technical drawing. Yet many students carry small but persistent misunderstandings into the examination hall, and these misunderstandings quietly cost marks in definitions, calculations and explanation questions. Most of them are not caused by laziness or weak mathematics; they come from everyday language, from half-remembered rules, and from skipping the physical reasoning behind a formula. This article collects the most common misconceptions across the AS Cambridge Engineering syllabus, explains exactly why each one is wrong, and gives a clear, exam-ready correction you can apply immediately in your revision and in the exam itself.
1. Force and Resultant Forces: Misunderstanding Equilibrium |
Misconception: students often believe that an object moving with constant velocity must have a net force acting on it to keep it moving, and that the normal reaction on an object resting on a surface is automatically equal in magnitude to its weight.
Correction: Newton's first law states that a body remains at rest, or moves with constant velocity in a straight line, unless acted on by a resultant external force. Constant velocity therefore means the resultant force is zero; the forces are in equilibrium, not absent. The normal reaction is a contact force that adjusts to whatever value is needed to satisfy equilibrium, so it equals weight only when the surface is horizontal and no other vertical force exists. On a slope, in a lift accelerating upwards, or when a second downward force is applied, the normal reaction differs from weight. Note also that the Newton's third law partner of the book's weight is the gravitational pull of the book on the Earth, not the normal contact force. Always draw a free-body diagram and check the equilibrium conditions:
ΣFx = 0, ΣFy = 0, W = m g, Fnet = m a
Where the resultant force is not zero, the body accelerates in the direction of the resultant; where it is zero, the velocity is constant. Use Fnet = m a only after resolving all forces into components.
2. Stress versus Pressure: Two Different Quantities |
Misconception: because stress and pressure share the unit N m⁻² (the pascal), many students treat them as the same quantity and use the words interchangeably in definitions and explanations.
Correction: pressure is the normal force per unit area exerted by a fluid or gas on a boundary surface, and it always acts perpendicular to that surface. Stress is an internal quantity: it describes the intensity of the internal forces transmitted across a cross-section within a solid material, and it arises from the material resisting deformation. Stress can be tensile (pulling), compressive (pushing) or shear (sliding along the section); pressure can only be compressive and normal. Both are force divided by area, so both have the unit N m⁻², but the physical context is completely different. A pressure value tells you about the loading applied to a surface; a stress value tells you about the internal state of the material, which is what determines whether it yields or fractures.
σ = F / A, p = F / A, 1 N mm⁻² = 1 MPa = 10⁶ Pa
In calculations, convert all dimensions to metres before substituting, or work consistently in N and mm and quote the answer in MPa. Mixing N with mm² and then quoting Pa is one of the most frequent unit errors in AS Engineering.
3. Stress, Strain and Young's Modulus: Units, Limits and Gradients |
Misconception: many students think that Young's modulus depends on the dimensions of the specimen, that strain has units, and that Hooke's law applies to the whole stress-strain curve.
dimensionless - it may be quoted as a ratio, a percentage or in microstrain (×10⁻⁶). Young' onger sample. The dimensions of the specimen affect the stiffness of the component, but not the modulus of the material. Hooke' graph curves, so the gradient is no longer constant and the equation must not be applied.
σ = F / A, ε = ΔL / L₀, E = σ / ε = (F L₀) / (A ΔL)
- The gradient of the linear region gives E — 线性区的斜率给出 E。
- The area under the curve up to fracture gives energy absorbed per unit volume (toughness) —
- The elastic limit, yield point, ultimate tensile strength and fracture point must be labelled in the correct order —
4. Moments and Couples: Perpendicular Distance and Sign Conventions |
Misconception: students frequently use the distance along the beam instead of the perpendicular distance from the pivot to the line of action of the force, and they often assume that a couple has a resultant force.
rce, M = F × d, measured in N m. If the force acts at an angle, resolve it first: only the component perpendicular to the lever arm produces a moment, and the parallel component produces a direct push or pull on the pivot with zero moment. A couple consists of two equal, opposite and parallel forces whose lines of action are separated by a perpendicular distance d; the resultant force is zero, but the moment is F × d about every point in the plane, which is why a couple causes pure rotation without translation.
M = F × d, ΣM = 0 (equilibrium), moment of a couple = F × d
For a simply supported horizontal beam in equilibrium, the two support reactions must sum to the total vertical load, and taking moments about either support gives an independent equation that allows the other reaction to be found.
5. Electrical Principles: Ohm's Law and Non-Ohmic Components |
Misconception: students often state that "resistance is always constant" or that Ohm's law applies to every component, including filament lamps, thermistors and diodes.
Correction: Ohm' ance only when R is constant; it holds for an ohmic conductor at constant temperature. For a metal filament lamp, the current heats the filament, the lattice ions vibrate more strongly and the resistance rises, so the I-V graph curves and the resistance increases as the potential difference increases. For an NTC thermistor, resistance falls as temperature rises, so its I-V characteristic bends the other way. A silicon diode conducts only above a forward threshold of roughly 0.6 to 0.7 V and offers very high resistance in reverse, so its characteristic is not a straight line at all. Always state the condition and describe the shape of the graph, not just the value of R.
- Fixed resistor: R constant, I-V graph a straight line through the origin — 定值电阻:R 恒定,I-V 图为过原点的直线。
- Filament lamp: gradient decreases as V increases — 白炽灯:随 V 增大图线斜率减小。
- Thermistor (NTC): resistance falls with rising temperature — 热敏电阻(NTC):温度升高电阻下降。
- Diode: negligible current below threshold, high resistance in reverse —
6. Series and Parallel Circuits: Current, Voltage and Resistance |
Misconception: a very common belief is that current is "used up" as it flows around a circuit, so the current returning to the battery is smaller than the current leaving it.
Correction: charge is conserved. In a series circuit the current is the same at every point, and it is the energy per unit charge (the potential difference) that is transferred to the components. In a parallel circuit the current splits at each junction, and the sum of the branch currents equals the current from the source. Voltages do not simply "divide equally" in series either: they divide in proportion to the resistances, because the current through each resistor is identical.
| Quantity | Series | Parallel |
| Current | Same everywhere | Splits, sum equals supply |
| Voltage | Divides in ratio of R | Same across each branch |
| Resistance | RT = R₁ + R₂ + … | 1 / RT = 1 / R₁ + 1 / R₂ + … |
Remember also that a real cell has internal resistance, so the terminal potential difference is less than the e.m.f.:
ε = I (R + r), Vterminal = ε − I r
An ammeter must be connected in series with the component and a voltmeter in parallel with it; connecting either the wrong way round is a practical and theory error that examiners look for.
7. Resistivity and Temperature Effects in Conductors |
Misconception: students often confuse resistance with resistivity, believe that a thicker wire has a higher resistance, and assume resistivity changes when the wire is cut in half.
stance is directly proportional to length and inversely proportional to cross-sectional area. Doubling the diameter of a wire increases its area by a factor of four and therefore reduces its resistance to one quarter. Resistivity does not depend on the length or the shape of the sample, but it does depend strongly on temperature. For metals, resistivity increases roughly linearly with temperature because lattice vibrations scatter the conduction electrons more effectively; for semiconductors such as thermistor materials, resistivity decreases as temperature rises because more charge carriers are released.
R = ρ L / A, ρ = R A / L (unit: Ω m)
When measuring resistivity in a practical, use a long, thin wire to obtain a measurable resistance, measure the diameter in several places with a micrometer and take a mean, and keep the current small so that heating does not change the temperature of the wire.
8. Materials Behaviour: Elastic, Plastic, Ductile, Brittle and Fatigue |
Misconception: students use the words stiff, strong, hard and tough as if they were synonyms, and they assume that a material only fails when the stress exceeds its ultimate tensile strength.
Correction: each term describes a different property. Stiffness is resistance to elastic deformation and is measured by Young's modulus. Strength is the stress a material can withstand before yielding or breaking. Hardness is resistance to surface indentation or scratching. Toughness is the energy a material absorbs before fracture and is given by the area under the stress-strain curve. Ductile materials such as mild steel deform plastically a great deal before breaking, which gives warning and allows redistribution of stress; brittle materials such as cast iron or glass fracture with little or no plastic deformation, so they fail suddenly. Finally, fatigue failure occurs when a component is subjected to many cycles of stress that are individually well below the ultimate tensile strength: microcracks initiate, propagate, and the component breaks without ever being overloaded.
- Stiff means high E, not high strength — 刚硬指 E 高,而不是强度高。
- Strong means high yield or fracture stress —
- Tough means large area under the curve —
- Fatigue is a cyclic-loading failure, not an overload failure —
9. Technical Drawing: Projection, Line Types and Dimensioning |
Misconception: students mix up first angle and third angle projection, use hidden lines for visible edges, and dimension the same feature twice or from the wrong reference.
Correction: in first angle projection, used by the British Standard and in Cambridge work, the view is placed on the opposite side of the object from the observer, so the plan appears below the front elevation and the side view appears on the opposite side to the direction from which it is viewed. In third angle projection, common in North America, each view is placed on the same side as the observer, so the plan sits above the front elevation. Line conventions are strict: continuous thick lines for visible outlines, dashed thin lines for hidden detail, long-dash-dot chain lines for centre lines and pitch circles, and thin continuous lines with arrowheads for dimension and projection lines. Every dimension is given once only, placed on the view that shows the feature most clearly, and measured from a stated datum rather than from whichever edge happens to be nearest.
