📚 Linguistics: The Scientific Study of Language | 语言学:语言的科学研究
Linguistics is the scientific study of language in all its forms. It asks not only how a particular language such as English or Mandarin works, but also what all human languages share, why children acquire them so effortlessly, and how language shapes the way we think and live together.
语言学是一门以科学方法探究语言的学科,涵盖语言的起源、结构、演变和实际使用。它不止关注某些特定语言,更试图把握语言现象背后那些具有普遍意义的规律,并追问人类为何能够如此轻松地习得语言。
1. What Linguistics Is | 什么是语言学
Linguists observe, record and analyse the sounds, words, grammar and meanings of many different languages in order to reveal the nature of the language system itself. They compare languages with one another, explore the communicative functions of language, and examine the role language plays in social and cultural settings.
语言学家会观察、记录并分析不同语言的语音、词汇、语法和语义特点,从而揭示语言系统的本质。他们比较各种语言之间的异同,探索语言的交际功能,也关注语言在社会和文化情境中扮演的角色。
A key distinction is that linguistics is descriptive rather than prescriptive: it describes what speakers actually say, instead of declaring what they ought to say. A rule such as "split infinitives are wrong" is a matter of style and social judgement, not of linguistic structure.
一个关键区别在于,语言学是描写性的,而非规定性的:它描写说话者实际怎么说,而不是规定他们应当怎么说。像"不能拆开不定式"这类说法属于文体与社会评判,与语言结构本身无关。
The main sub-fields of the discipline can be summarised as follows.
该学科的主要子领域可以概括如下。
| Sub-field | Focus | 中文 |
| Phonetics / Phonology | Speech sounds and sound systems | 语音学 / 音系学:语音与语音系统 |
| Morphology | Internal structure of words | 形态学:词的内部结构 |
| Syntax | How phrases and sentences are built | 句法学:短语与句子的构成规则 |
| Semantics | Meaning of words and sentences | 语义学:词与句子的意义 |
| Pragmatics | Meaning in context and use | 语用学:语境中的使用与意义生成 |
2. Linguistics as a Science | 语言学作为一门科学
Linguistics earns the label "science" because it works from evidence rather than opinion. Data may come from recordings of natural speech, large written corpora, native speakers' judgements about which sentences sound grammatical, and controlled experiments that measure reaction times or brain activity.
语言学之所以被称为"科学",是因为它依据证据而非主观意见。数据可以来自自然口语录音、大型书面语料库、母语者对句子是否合乎语法的判断,以及测量反应时间或大脑活动的受控实验。
A hypothesis about language must be testable and falsifiable. If a theory predicts that no human language forms questions by reversing the whole sentence, one counter-example is enough to force a revision. This constant cycle of prediction, testing and refinement is what separates linguistics from folk beliefs about language.
关于语言的假设必须可检验、可证伪。如果某个理论断言没有任何人类语言通过整句倒装来构成疑问句,那么只要出现一个反例,就必须修正该理论。这种预测、检验与修正的循环,正是语言学区别于关于语言的民间观念之处。
Linguists also distinguish competence from performance: the internal knowledge a speaker has of their language, versus what they actually produce under the pressures of memory, attention and fatigue. Slips of the tongue do not usually reflect a broken grammar.
语言学家还区分语言能力与语言运用:前者是说话者头脑中关于母语的内在知识,后者是他们在记忆、注意力和疲劳压力下实际产出的言语。口误通常并不代表语法系统出了故障。
3. Phonetics and Phonology | 语音学与音系学
Phonetics examines the physical side of speech: how the lips, tongue, vocal folds and airflow produce sounds (articulatory phonetics), what acoustic patterns result (acoustic phonetics), and how listeners perceive them (auditory phonetics). Phonology, by contrast, studies how those sounds function as a system within a particular language.
语音学研究言语的物理层面:唇、舌、声带与气流如何发出声音(发音语音学),产生怎样的声学模式(声学语音学),以及听者如何感知它们(听觉语音学)。音系学则研究这些语音在某一具体语言中如何作为一个系统发挥功能。
The central unit of phonology is the phoneme, the smallest sound unit that can distinguish meaning. In English, 'pin' and 'bin' differ only in their initial phoneme, so /p/ and /b/ are separate phonemes; the pair of words is called a minimal pair.
音系学的核心单位是音位,即能够区分意义的最小语音单位。在英语中,'pin' 与 'bin' 只在首音位上不同,因此 /p/ 与 /b/ 是两个不同的音位,这样的一对词称为最小对立对。
Phonemes have variant realisations called allophones, which depend on position and neighbouring sounds. The plural ending of 'cats' is pronounced /s/ while that of 'dogs' is /z/, yet speakers treat both as the same grammatical ending. Such patterns are captured by phonological rules.
音位有称为音位变体的不同实现形式,取决于位置与相邻语音。'cats' 的复数词尾读作 /s/,而 'dogs' 的词尾读作 /z/,但说话者把两者视为同一个语法词尾。这类规律由音系规则来刻画。
/s/ → [z] / [+voiced] ___ #
Phonology also covers syllable structure, stress, tone and intonation. In Mandarin, tone is lexically contrastive: mā 妈, má 麻, mǎ 马 and mà 骂 are four different words distinguished only by pitch contour.
音系学还涉及音节结构、重音、声调与语调。在汉语普通话中,声调具有词汇区别作用:妈、麻、马、骂四个词仅靠音高曲线区分意义。
4. Morphology | 形态学
Morphology examines the internal structure of words and explains the rules of word formation and inflection. Its basic unit is the morpheme, the smallest meaningful element of language. 'Unhappiness' contains three morphemes: un- (negation), happy (a root) and -ness (which turns an adjective into a noun).
形态学考察词的内部结构,解释构词规则和屈折变化。它的基本单位是语素,即语言中最小的有意义的成分。'unhappiness' 包含三个语素:un-(否定)、happy(词根)与 -ness(把形容词变为名词)。
Morphemes may be free, standing alone as words, or bound, appearing only in combination with other morphemes. English -s, -ed and -ing are bound inflectional morphemes, while un-, re- and -ness are derivational: they create new words rather than simply marking grammatical information.
语素可以是自由语素,能够独立成词;也可以是粘着语素,只能与其他语素组合出现。英语的 -s、-ed、-ing 是粘着的屈折语素,而 un-、re-、-ness 属于派生语素,它们创造新词,而不只是标记语法信息。
Beyond affixation, languages build words by compounding (rainbow, textbook), conversion (to google from Google), blending (smog from smoke and fog) and abbreviation. Some languages, such as Turkish, string many morphemes into a single long word, whereas Chinese relies heavily on compounding rather than inflection.
除词缀法之外,语言还通过复合(rainbow、textbook)、转类(由 Google 得到 to google)、混成(smog 由 smoke 与 fog 缩合)和缩略来构词。土耳其语等语言可以把许多语素串接成一个很长的词,而汉语则大量依靠复合而非屈折变化。
5. Syntax | 句法学
Syntax analyses how words combine into phrases and sentences, specifying the grammatical rules that govern phrase and sentence structure. Words group into constituents: in 'the very old man', the string 'very old' behaves as a unit because it can be replaced by a single word such as 'tall'.
句法学分析句子构成,刻画短语和句子的语法规则。词会组成句法成分:在 'the very old man' 中,'very old' 作为一个单位运作,因为它可以被 'tall' 这样的单个词替换。
Such structure is often represented with phrase structure rules and tree diagrams. A simple sentence rule states that a sentence consists of a noun phrase followed by a verb phrase.
这种结构通常用短语结构规则和树形图表示。一条简单的句子规则说明:句子由名词短语加动词短语构成。
S → NP + VP
Syntax is recursive: a phrase may contain another phrase of the same type, which is why a finite set of rules can generate an unlimited number of sentences. Structures may also be ambiguous, as in 'I saw the man with the telescope', where the phrase 'with the telescope' may describe the man or the act of seeing.
句法具有递归性:一个短语可以包含同类短语,因此有限的规则能够生成无限的句子。结构也可能产生歧义,例如 'I saw the man with the telescope' 中,'with the telescope' 既可以修饰那个人,也可以说明观看的方式。
Modern syntactic theory also distinguishes deep structure from surface structure: 'The dog chased the cat' and 'The cat was chased by the dog' differ in form but share a core set of grammatical relations. Explaining how children acquire such abstract rules remains one of the field's great debates.
现代句法理论还区分深层结构与表层结构:'The dog chased the cat' 与 'The cat was chased by the dog' 形式不同,却共享核心的语法关系。如何解释儿童习得这些抽象规则,仍是该领域最重大的争论之一。
6. Semantics | 语义学
Semantics explains the meaning of words and sentences. It separates sense from reference: the phrase 'the morning star' and 'the evening star' refer to the same object, Venus, yet they differ in sense because they present that object in different ways.
语义学阐明词和句子的意义。它区分涵义与指称:'the morning star' 与 'the evening star' 指称同一个对象——金星,但涵义不同,因为它们以不同方式呈现该对象。
Lexical meaning is organised into networks: synonymy (big / large), antonymy (hot / cold), hyponymy (rose is a hyponym of flower) and polysemy (a single word with related senses, such as 'head' of a body and 'head' of a department).
词汇意义被组织成网络:同义关系(big / large)、反义关系(hot / cold)、上下义关系(rose 是 flower 的下义词)以及一词多义(同一个词具有相关义项,如身体的 'head' 与部门的 'head')。
Sentential meaning follows the principle of compositionality: the meaning of a sentence is derived from the meanings of its parts and the way they are combined. Semantics also studies entailment, the relation in which one sentence guarantees the truth of another, and thematic roles such as agent, patient and instrument.
句子意义遵循组合性原则:句子的意义由其各部分的意义以及组合方式推导而来。语义学还研究蕴涵关系,即一句话保证另一句话为真的关系,以及施事、受事、工具等题元角色。
7. Pragmatics | 语用学
Pragmatics studies the rules and processes by which meaning is generated when language is used in a specific context. The same sentence can perform very different actions: 'It is cold in here' may simply report a fact, or it may be a polite request to close the window.
语用学研究语言在具体语境中的使用规则与意义生成。同一个句子可以实施完全不同的行为:'It is cold in here' 既可以只是陈述事实,也可以是请对方关窗的委婉请求。
Speech act theory, developed by Austin and Searle, holds that utterances perform actions such as promising, apologising, requesting and declaring. Grice's cooperative principle offers a further explanation: speakers are assumed to follow maxims of quantity, quality, relation and manner, and hearers interpret any apparent violation as a conversational implicature.
由奥斯汀和塞尔发展的言语行为理论认为,话语本身就在实施承诺、道歉、请求、宣告等行为。格赖斯的合作原则提供了进一步解释:人们假定说话者遵守数量、质量、关联和方式准则,而听者会把对准则的表面违反解读为会话含义。
Pragmatics also covers deixis (words like 'here', 'now' and 'you' that depend on context), presupposition and politeness. In many cultures, indirect requests are considered more polite than direct commands, which is why 'Could you possibly...' is a far more powerful request than 'Close the door'.
语用学还涉及指示语('here'、'now'、'you' 等依赖语境的词)、预设与礼貌。在许多文化中,间接请求比直接命令更显礼貌,这正是 'Could you possibly...' 比 'Close the door' 更有力的原因。
8. Sociolinguistics and Language in Culture | 社会语言学与文化中的语言
Sociolinguistics examines the relationship between language and society. Variationist research, pioneered by William Labov, shows that features such as the pronunciation of a final consonant or the use of double negatives correlate systematically with social class, age, gender and situation.
社会语言学研究语言与社会的关系。由拉波夫开创的变异研究显示,诸如词尾辅音的发音或双重否定等语言特征,会与社会阶层、年龄、性别和交际场合系统地相关。
No two speakers use a language in exactly the same way. Regional and social dialects differ in phonology, vocabulary and grammar, and speakers shift between registers and styles, or switch codes entirely, depending on who they are talking to. Bilingual communities often assign different functions to each language, a situation known as diglossia.
没有两个人使用语言的方式完全相同。地域方言与社会方言在音系、词汇和语法上都有差异;说话者会依据交谈对象在不同语域和语体之间转换,甚至完全转换语码。双语社群常常为两种语言分配不同功能,这种情况被称为双言制。
Language is also tied to identity and power. Attitudes towards accents reveal social hierarchies, and the way a government, school or media outlet uses language can privilege some groups and marginalise others. Studying these patterns helps explain both everyday communication and larger social tensions.
语言还与身份和权力紧密相连。对口音的态度揭示了社会层级,而政府、学校或媒体使用语言的方式,可能使某些群体获得优势,另一些则被边缘化。研究这些模式有助于解释日常交际乃至更广泛的社会张力。
9. Historical and Comparative Linguistics | 历史与比较语言学
Historical linguistics studies how languages change over time. By comparing cognates, words in different languages that descend from a common ancestor, scholars reconstruct proto-languages that were never written down. English 'father', Latin 'pater' and Sanskrit 'pitā' all point back to a single ancestral form in Proto-Indo-European.
历史语言学研究语言如何随时间演变。通过比较同源词,即源自同一祖语的不同语言中的词,学者可以重构从未被书写记录的原始语言。英语 'father'、拉丁语 'pater' 与梵语 'pitā' 都指向原始印欧语中的同一个祖语形式。
Sound change tends to be regular, and regular correspondences can be stated as laws. Grimm's law, for example, describes how Proto-Indo-European voiceless stops became fricatives in the Germanic branch.
语音演变往往具有规律性,这些规律性对应关系可以表述为定律。例如格林定律描述了原始印欧语的清塞音如何在日耳曼语支中演变为擦音。
p → f t → θ k → h
Languages also change through borrowing, analogy and language contact, and they may split, converge or disappear. Today many minority languages are endangered, and documentation work is urgent; at the same time, revitalisation projects in Wales, New Zealand and elsewhere show that decline is not always irreversible.
语言还会因借词、类推和语言接触而发生变化,并可能分化、融合或消亡。如今许多少数民族语言濒临消失,记录工作十分紧迫;与此同时,威尔士、新西兰等地的复兴项目表明,衰落并非总是不可逆转。
10. Language Universals and Typology | 语言共性与语言类型学
Typology classifies languages according to their structural properties rather than their history. One common measure is basic word order: English is SVO, Japanese is SOV, and Classical Arabic is VSO. Joseph Greenberg showed that such choices are not random, since certain orders correlate with others, for instance SOV languages tend to place the adjective before the noun.
语言类型学依据结构特征而非历史渊源对语言进行分类。一个常用标准是基本语序:英语是 SVO,日语是 SOV,古典阿拉伯语是 VSO。格林伯格指出,这些选择并非任意,某些语序之间存在相关性,例如 SOV 语言往往把形容词放在名词之前。
Languages are also grouped by how they build words: isolating languages such as Mandarin use little inflection, agglutinative languages such as Turkish chain clearly separable affixes, fusional languages such as Latin merge several grammatical meanings into one ending, and polysynthetic languages can express an entire clause within a single complex word.
语言还可以按构词方式分类:汉语等孤立语很少使用屈折,土耳其语等黏着语把可清晰切分的词缀串接起来,拉丁语等屈折语把多个语法意义合并到一个词尾中,而多式综合语可以把整个小句表达为一个复杂的词。
| Type | Example | 中文 |
| Isolating | Mandarin | 孤立语:汉语 |
| Agglutinative | Turkish | 黏着语:土耳其语 |
| Fusional | Latin, Russian | 屈折语:拉丁语、俄语 |
| Polysynthetic | Inuktitut | 多式综合语:因纽特语 |
Typology is closely linked to the search for language universals, properties shared by all human languages. To understand the nature of human linguistic ability and the character of thought, we need this comparative perspective: by contrasting the similarities and differences between languages, linguists can reveal the universal capacities and cognitive patterns that all human beings possess.
类型学与语言共性的探索密切相关,后者指所有人类语言共有的属性。想要洞察人类语言能力的本质以及思维方式的特点,离不开这种比较视角:透过对比不同语言间的共性和差异,语言学家能够揭示人类普遍拥有的语言能力和认知模式。
11. Applied Linguistics: Disorders, Teaching and Translation | 应用语言学:语言障碍、教学与翻译
Linguistics can also be used to address practical language-related problems, for example the rehabilitation of language disorders and the improvement of language teaching. Clinical linguistics informs the assessment and treatment of aphas
