📚 Engineering – Petroleum: Exploration, Drilling and Production |
Engineering is an applied science. It takes the laws of physics, chemistry and mathematics and turns them into structures, machines, materials and processes that work reliably in the real world. Within engineering, petroleum engineering is the branch that focuses on finding, extracting, producing and processing oil and natural gas. This article follows the whole chain: how geologists and geophysicists locate a reservoir, how drilling engineers reach it, how production engineers bring the hydrocarbons to surface, and how the industry manages safety, cost and environmental impact.
1. What Engineering Is | 什么是工程学
Engineering is an applied science covering the design, construction, operation and maintenance of structures, equipment and systems. A pure scientist asks why a phenomenon happens; an engineer asks how a useful, safe and affordable solution can be built, and at what cost in money, energy and risk. Every branch shares the same working method: define the problem, model it with mathematics, design a solution, test it, then manage it throughout its service life.
Classical branches include civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical and materials engineering. Petroleum engineering sits at the intersection of several of them, which is why it is often called a systems discipline rather than a single subject.
- Civil engineering - roads, bridges, platforms, foundations /
- Mechanical engineering - pumps, turbines, compressors, valves /
- Chemical engineering - separation, refining, gas treatment /
- Petroleum engineering - reservoirs, wells, production systems /
2. What Petroleum Engineering Is | 什么是石油工程
Petroleum engineering is the branch of engineering concerned with the recovery, production and processing of oil and natural gas. Practitioners apply scientific principles and engineering techniques to develop and maintain petroleum resources so that hydrocarbons can be extracted and used efficiently, safely and economically.
The subject is usually divided into three sub-disciplines, and the wider industry is often described in three stages:
- Reservoir engineering - how much hydrocarbon is present and how it flows /
- Drilling engineering - how the well is designed and drilled safely /
- Production engineering - how fluids are lifted, separated and treated at surface /
- Upstream, midstream and downstream /
3. Why Petroleum Matters |
Petroleum is one of the most important energy sources in the world and is used widely in industry, transport and daily life at home. Its main advantage is energy density: a kilogram of crude oil releases roughly 42 to 44 MJ when burned, far more than coal or wood for the same mass, which makes it practical for vehicles, ships and aircraft.
The combustion of hydrocarbons is a straightforward oxidation reaction, and balancing it is a standard exam skill:
CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O
2C₈H₁₈ + 25O₂ → 16CO₂ + 18H₂O
Oil and gas are also chemical feedstocks. Plastics, synthetic fibres, fertilisers, detergents and many medicines begin as hydrocarbons, so demand does not disappear even when transport is electrified.
| Fuel | Approx. energy density (MJ kg⁻¹) |
| Natural gas | ≈ 50 |
| Crude oil | ≈ 42-44 |
| Coal | ≈ 24-30 |
| Dry wood | ≈ 16 |
4. The Petroleum System |
Before anyone drills, there must be a petroleum system. Five elements are required: a source rock rich in organic matter, sufficient heat over geological time to convert that matter into oil or gas, a porous and permeable reservoir rock, an impermeable cap rock (seal), and a trap - a geometry such as an anticline or fault block that stops the hydrocarbons escaping.
The key rock properties are porosity and permeability. Porosity is the fraction of void space:
φ = V(pore) ÷ V(bulk) × 100%
Permeability, measured in darcies or millidarcies (mD), describes how easily a fluid flows through the rock. A rock can be very porous yet almost impermeable if the pores are not connected, which is why both properties must be measured.
| Rock type | Porosity | Permeability |
| Sandstone reservoir | 10-30% | 10-1000 mD |
| Carbonate reservoir | 5-20% | 0.1-100 mD |
| Shale source rock | 2-10% | < 0.01 mD |
5. Exploration: Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry |
Exploration is the first stage of petroleum engineering. Engineers and scientists use geology, geophysics and geochemistry to assess potential oil and gas resources before a single well is drilled. Geology supplies the regional picture from outcrops, maps and cores; geophysics supplies the deep image from gravity, magnetic and seismic surveys; geochemistry analyses rock and fluid samples to confirm whether organic matter has matured into oil or gas.
A useful reference point is the oil window: source rocks generally generate liquid oil between about 60 °C and 120 °C, and mostly dry gas above roughly 150 °C. Temperature rises with depth at a typical geothermal gradient of 25 to 30 °C per kilometre.
Once exploration data are gathered, engineers build simulation models and carry out economic evaluation to decide the best recovery plan, or to walk away from the prospect entirely.
6. Seismic Exploration and Reservoir Modelling |
Seismic exploration is the most powerful tool for locating and sizing a reservoir. A controlled source - explosives, an airgun at sea, or a vibrator truck on land - sends elastic waves into the ground. Reflections from boundaries between rock layers return to receivers, and the two-way travel time gives depth:
t = 2d ÷ v
Modern surveys are three-dimensional, and repeated 4D surveys over the same field show how fluids move as production proceeds. The processed data are then loaded into a reservoir simulator, a numerical grid that solves flow equations for millions of cells.
Flow itself is described by Darcy's law, which links rate to pressure gradient, permeability, area and viscosity:
Q = k × A × Δp ÷ (μ × L)
Where Q is flow rate, k is permeability, A is cross-sectional area, Δp is the pressure drop, μ is fluid viscosity and L is the flow path length. Recovery is reported as a fraction of the original oil in place:
RF = cumulative production ÷ OOIP × 100%
7. Drilling Engineering |
Drilling is the key step that connects surface facilities to the reservoir. A rig rotates a drill string and bit to cut a wellbore down to the target formation, while drilling fluid (mud) circulates to cool the bit, carry cuttings to surface, and hold back formation pressure. Steel casing is run and cemented in place to keep the hole open and to isolate fluids.
Choosing the right drilling method and technology is not simple. Engineers must weigh geological conditions, field size, well depth, deviation, temperature and cost-effectiveness together, because a deep-water well can cost tens of millions of dollars and take months to complete.
Pressure control is the core safety concern. The hydrostatic pressure of the mud column must stay between pore pressure and fracture pressure:
p = ρ × g × h
Directional and horizontal drilling allow a single surface location to drain a large area, and hydraulic fracturing can create flow paths in tight rock - both are standard modern techniques rather than exceptions.
8. Recovery and Enhanced Oil Recovery |
Once a well is producing, engineers work to raise output and extend field life. Primary recovery relies on natural drive energy - solution gas, gas cap expansion or aquifer support - and typically recovers only 5 to 15 percent of the oil in place. Secondary recovery injects water or gas to maintain pressure and sweep additional oil towards producers.
Water flooding and water injection are the classic techniques: injecting water increases formation pressure and pushes oil through the pore network towards producing wells. Steam flooding goes further by heating the reservoir. Because hot oil is much less viscous, it flows far more easily, which is why thermal methods dominate heavy oil fields.
Mobility ratio compares how easily the displacing fluid moves compared with the oil, and it explains why viscous oil is hard to sweep:
M = (k(w) ÷ μ(w)) ÷ (k(o) ÷ μ(o))
| Method | Mechanism |
| Water injection | Pressure support, sweep |
| Steam flooding | Heat lowers viscosity |
| CO₂ injection | Miscible displacement |
| Polymer flooding | Improves mobility ratio |
9. Surface Facilities, Processing, Storage and Transport |
Petroleum engineers also manage the whole surface chain of production and processing. Wellstream fluid - a mixture of oil, gas, water and sand - passes through separators, where pressure is dropped in stages so that gas, oil and water can be divided. Crude oil is then dehydrated, desalted and stabilised before sale.
They keep equipment running, monitor production data, carry out maintenance and repairs, and make sure the operation meets environmental and safety standards. Gas treatment removes hydrogen sulphide, a toxic and corrosive impurity, in a process known as sweetening.
Crude is measured in barrels. One barrel equals about 0.159 m³
