📚 AS CCEA English Literature: UK University Entry Requirements Guide | AS CCEA
Choosing AS English Literature with CCEA is an excellent way to develop critical reading and essay-writing skills, but understanding how UK universities value this qualification is essential for your UCAS application strategy. Whether you plan to continue to A2 or stop at AS, the way universities treat your AS grade can influence subject choices, personal statements, and offer conditions. This guide compares entry requirements across top UK universities, explains UCAS tariff points, and shows how AS CCEA English Literature fits into applications for English degrees and beyond.
1. Understanding UCAS Tariff Points for AS English Literature | AS 英语文学的 UCAS 积分
iterature, the points are: A = 20, B = 16, C = 12, D = 10, E = 6. An AS grade A carries 20 points, slightly more than an A-level grade E (16 points), but well below an A-level A (48 points). This means a strong AS performance can boost a points-based offer, but it rarely replaces a full A-level in subject-specific requirements.
CCEA AS 英语文学的积分为：A = 20 分，B = 16 分，C = 12 分，D = 10 分，E = 6 分。一个 AS 的 A 等获得 20 分，稍高于 A-Level 的 E 等（16 分），但远低于 A-Level 的 A 等（48 分）。
2. Russell Group University Subject Requirements |
Russell Group universities often publish lists of 'facilitating subjects', and English Literature is considered one of them. However, for English Literature degree courses, these universities almost always require A-level English Literature or English Language and Literature. AS English Literature alone, even at grade A, is not sufficient to meet the essential subject requirement. For example, the University of Manchester states that for its BA English Literature, applicants need A-level English Literature (or combined) at grade A. CCEA AS can be mentioned in the UCAS reference as evidence of ability, but it is the full A-level that unlocks the degree.
3. AS vs A-Level English Literature in Degree Admissions | AS
If you plan to apply for English Literature at a competitive university, continuing the subject to A2 is non-negotiable. For other humanities and social science degrees—such as Law, History, or Politics—a high AS grade strengthens your application by demonstrating analytical and communication skills, but it is not a substitute for required subjects. Universities like the London School of Economics (LSE) look favourably on essay-based subjects at AS or A-level, so listing AS English Literature on your UCAS form can increase your competitiveness even if you do not carry it forward.
4. Typical Offers for English Literature Degrees |
Offers for single-honours English Literature degrees are typically expressed in A-level grades, not UCAS points. At Durham University, the standard offer is A*AA including English Literature. At the University of Edinburgh, typical offers are AAA including English Literature or combined English. Some universities, such as the University of Leeds, accept AAB with an A in English Literature. In all cases, the AS qualification is not counted towards the required grades, though a strong AS profile might influence a near-miss decision. The table below summarises requirements from selected universities.
| University | Typical Offer (2024 entry) | Required A-level Subject |
|---|---|---|
| University of Oxford | AAA | English Literature (or Language & Literature) |
| University of Cambridge | A*AA | English Literature (A-level) |
| UCL (University College London) | AAA | English Literature, grade A |
| University of Edinburgh | AAA | English Literature or combined English |
| University of Bristol | AAA | English Literature or combined English |
| University of Exeter | AAB - AAA | English Literature required at A |
Please note: all offers require the A-level in English Literature (or equivalent). CCEA AS English Literature, while excellent preparation, does not replace the A-level for these degree programmes.
