Every year thousands of students leave international schools in Indonesia, South Africa, Spain, China and Thailand with a single goal in mind: a place at a UK university. What most of them discover along the way is that the Cambridge International A Level programme they followed at school is far more than an exam certificate - it works like a passport, opening doors to some of the most competitive departments in Britain.

Cambridge International A Levels are accepted by every UK university, including all members of the Russell Group, and are one of the most widely used qualifications in undergraduate admissions. Admissions tutors know the syllabus, the assessment objectives and the grade boundaries, so an A grade carries the same meaning in Canterbury, Durham, London or anywhere else in the country.

'Entering a UK university to study was one of my biggest dreams. Thanks to my Cambridge International A Level results, I went straight into the Kent School of Architecture, which is accredited by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and for which I am deeply grateful, and I also received an Academic Excellence Scholarship from the University of Kent. Through the A Level Physics and Mathematics courses I understood the technical side of architecture. Studying in the UK is a wonderful experience and I especially enjoy having Canterbury as my study base. Although I have only been here a few months, my English has improved enormously and my global outlook has broadened.'

RIBA validation is not a marketing label. A RIBA-validated degree is the first formal step - Part 1 - on the route to becoming a registered architect in the United Kingdom, which is why competition for such places is intense and why admissions tutors look closely at both creative portfolios and technical ability.

Asked what she took from the programme, Mary did not talk about content alone. She talked about preparedness, self-discipline and personal responsibility - the habits that make a difference in the second and third year of a degree.

Pelayo Méndez studied Cambridge International A Level Mathematics, Physics and History at The British School of Barcelona in Spain. He then entered the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) to read Economics, and in the previous academic year he won the Goner Award.

Pelayo is explicit that the prize was not handed to him. It was earned over two years of consistent work - and he argues that the recognition of the qualification in the UK is precisely what made that work worthwhile.

'The qualification I took required two years of continuous effort, but I quickly understood that the effort was worth it - not only was I admitted to the London School of Economics and Political Science on the strength of my Cambridge International certificate, I also acquired a solid command of the skills needed for every undergraduate course. That includes subjects that combine arts and sciences, such as Economics, which relies heavily on essay writing and mathematics. Few examination boards enjoy the recognition that Cambridge International certificates have at leading UK universities, and that made my effort more valuable. For that I am immensely grateful to my school and my teachers.'
