📚 Earth and Marine Sciences: Inside the Planet and Its Oceans |
Earth and marine sciences is a genuinely interdisciplinary subject: it borrows tools and ideas from physics, chemistry, biology, geology and geography to explain how the solid Earth, the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and the oceans behave, and how those systems interact with human societies. Rather than studying rocks, water or living things in isolation, it treats the planet as one connected machine driven by energy from the Sun and heat from the Earth's interior.
This article covers the core content that appears in A-Level Geography, Environmental Science, Geology and Cambridge International AS & A Level Marine Science: the structure and dynamics of the Earth's interior, plate tectonics, atmosphere and climate, soils and the water cycle, ocean physics and chemistry, marine biodiversity, the deep sea, natural hazards, resource management, and the skills and careers that follow.

1. What Earth and Marine Sciences Study |
Earth and marine sciences examines the phenomena and processes of the Earth system and the oceans, together with their consequences for people and the environment. Phenomena range from the slow creep of tectonic plates to the fast passage of a storm surge; processes range from mantle convection lasting millions of years to photosynthesis lasting milliseconds.
The subject is organised around a few unifying ideas: energy flow, mass and nutrient cycling, feedback loops, and the interaction between short-term events and long-term change. A single rainfall event, for example, links atmospheric circulation, soil infiltration, river discharge and coastal sediment transport.

2. Structure and Dynamics of the Earth's Interior |
The Earth is layered by composition and by mechanical behaviour. The crust (oceanic and continental), the mantle, the outer core and the inner core differ in density, temperature and state. Seismic waves reveal these boundaries: P-waves and S-waves change speed or are refracted at discontinuities such as the Moho between crust and mantle, and the Gutenberg discontinuity at the core-mantle boundary.
S-waves cannot travel through liquids, and their shadow zone is direct evidence that the outer core is liquid. Heat escaping from the interior drives mantle convection, which in turn drives plate motion and generates the geomagnetic field through motion in the liquid outer core.
Pressure increases with depth: P = ρ × g × h
1.4 × 10¹¹ Pa, which is why mantle rock behaves plastically over geological time even though it is solid.
3. Plate Tectonics, Earthquakes and Volcanoes |
Plate tectonics explains the distribution of earthquakes, volcanoes, mountain belts and ocean basins. Lithospheric plates move over the asthenosphere at typical rates of 2-10 cm per year, driven by mantle convection, ridge push and slab pull. Average plate speed can be estimated from the distance a plate has travelled divided by the time taken.
v = d ÷ t
At divergent boundaries such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, new oceanic crust forms and seafloor spreading occurs. At convergent boundaries, oceanic lithosphere subducts beneath continental lithosphere, producing deep-sea trenches, island arcs, explosive volcanoes and great earthquakes. At transform boundaries, plates slide past one another, generating shallow-focus earthquakes such as those on the San Andreas Fault.
Earthquake size is described by magnitude, now usually the moment magnitude scale:
Mw = (2 ÷ 3) × log₁₀ M₀ − 6.1
where M₀ is the seismic moment in N·m. Magnitude is logarithmic, so an increase of one unit represents roughly a 32-fold increase in released energy. Volcanic style depends on magma viscosity and gas content: basaltic magma produces effusive shield volcanoes and lava flows, whereas andesitic and rhyolitic magma produces stratovolcanoes, pyroclastic flows and ash plumes.
4. Atmosphere and Climate Systems |
The atmosphere is divided by temperature structure into the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere and thermosphere. Weather happens mainly in the troposphere, where temperature falls with height at an average environmental lapse rate of about 6.5 °C per km. The stratosphere contains the ozone layer, which absorbs ultraviolet radiation and explains the temperature inversion there.
Earth's radiative balance determines its average temperature. Incoming shortwave radiation is partly reflected (albedo, α) and partly absorbed; the planet re-emits longwave radiation. A simple energy-balance model gives:
(1 − α) × S ÷ 4 = σ × T⁴
s effective temperature in kelvin. Without the greenhouse effect this gives about 255 K (−18 °C); greenhouse gases such as CO₂, CH₄ and H₂O raise the surface average to about 288 K (15 °C).
Climate differs from weather in timescale and in statistical treatment. Climate change research uses instrumental records, ice cores, tree rings and ocean sediments as proxies, while air pollution studies focus on particulates (PM₂.₅, PM₁₀), sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and tropospheric ozone.
5. Soils, Rocks and the Water Cycle |
Rocks are classified as igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic according to their origin. Their mineral composition, porosity and permeability control how water moves through the landscape. Porosity is the proportion of void space, while permeability describes how easily fluid can pass through connected pores.
Porosity φ = (Vpores ÷ Vtotal) × 100%
Soil is a mixture of mineral particles, organic matter, water, air and living organisms. Texture (sand, silt, clay), structure, pH and organic content determine infiltration rate, water-holding capacity and fertility. Clay-rich soils hold water but drain slowly; sandy soils drain rapidly but retain few nutrients.
Soils and rocks regulate the water cycle. Water enters the system as precipitation, is intercepted by vegetation, infiltrates or runs off, is stored in soil and aquifers, and returns to the atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration. Groundwater recharge depends on both climate and geology, which is why the same rainfall produces very different river responses on chalk and on granite.
6. Physical Oceanography: Currents, Temperature and Salinity |
Marine science examines the physical properties of seawater: currents, waves, tides, temperature, salinity, density, turbidity and pressure. Surface currents are driven mainly by prevailing winds and deflected by the Coriolis effect, forming large gyres. Deep circulation, often called the thermohaline circulation, is driven by differences in temperature and salinity that create density gradients.
Density ρ = mass ÷ volume | Salinity S = (msalt ÷ m_seawater) × 1000
Salinity is expressed in grams of dissolved salts per kilogram of seawater (‰). Open-ocean salinity averages about 35 ‰, but varies with evaporation, precipitation, river input and ice formation. Cold, salty water is dense and sinks; warm, fresh water is buoyant and stays near the surface.
| Sea-surface temperature | 海表温度 | −1.8 °C to 30 °C | Solar radiation, latitude | 太阳辐射、纬度 |
| Surface pH | 表层 pH | About 8.1 | CO₂ uptake, temperature | 二氧化碳吸收、温度 |
Turbidity measures water clarity and is affected by suspended sediment, plankton blooms and pollutants; it controls light penetration and therefore the depth of the photic zone where photosynthesis is possible.
7. Ocean Chemistry and Nutrient Cycles |
Dissolved ions in seawater are dominated by sodium, chloride, sulphate, magnesium, calcium and potassium. The carbonate system buffers ocean pH and links the ocean to the atmosphere through the exchange of carbon dioxide.
CO₂ + H₂O ⇌ H₂CO₃ ⇌ H⁺ + HCO₃⁻ ⇌ 2H⁺ + CO₃²⁻
When atmospheric CO₂ dissolves in seawater, carbonic acid forms and releases hydrogen ions, lowering pH. This process, ocean acidification, reduces the availability of carbonate ions (CO₃²⁻) that corals, molluscs and coccolithophores need for calcification:
Ca²⁺ + 2HCO₃⁻ → CaCO₃ + CO₂ + H₂O
Nutrient cycles in the ocean are dominated by nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon. These nutrients limit primary productivity in most regions. Upwelling brings nutrient-rich deep water to the surface, supporting the world's most productive fisheries off Peru, Namibia and Mauritania.
Oxygen is another key chemical variable. Below the well-mixed surface layer, respiration consumes oxygen and creates an oxygen minimum zone. Anoxic conditions can develop in enclosed basins and in areas of heavy nutrient pollution, producing dead zones where most animal life cannot survive.
8. Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystems |
Marine organisms are grouped by lifestyle into plankton (drifters), nekton (active swimmers) and benthos (bottom dwellers). Primary production is carried out by phytoplankton, seaweeds and seagrasses through photosynthesis:
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
Energy then passes through food webs via grazing and predation. Trophic levels rarely exceed five in the ocean because energy transfer between levels is inefficient, typically only about 10%. This is why top predators such as tuna and sharks are relatively rare and vulnerable to overfishing.
Key marine ecosystems include coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass meadows, kelp forests, estuaries, salt marshes and the open ocean. Coral reefs occupy less than 1% of the seafloor yet support around a quarter of all marine species. Mangroves and salt marshes provide nursery habitat, trap sediment and store carbon, which makes them valuable for both biodiversity and climate mitigation.
