This article provides a detailed comparison of entry requirements for Politics and related degrees at top UK universities, with a focus on the role of AS Politics and the value of your qualification.
1. Overview of UCAS Entry Requirements | UCAS
All UK undergraduate applications are processed through UCAS. Universities set specific entry requirements in terms of A-level grades, subjects, and sometimes additional tests. For Politics, most universities require at least three A-levels, with typical offers ranging from A*AA to ABB.
AS qualifications are still valued even though they no longer contribute to a full A-level in linear courses. Universities may consider AS grades as part of a holistic assessment, especially if you are predicted to complete the full A-level in Politics.
2. Is A-Level Politics a Required Subject? | A-Level
Very few UK universities explicitly require A-level Politics for entry to a Politics degree. Admissions tutors understand that not all schools offer the subject. However, they do look for evidence of interest and ability in essay-based and analytical disciplines.
Some universities, like LSE and Durham, describe A-level Politics as a 'useful' or 'relevant' subject but still do not make it compulsory. Others, such as Oxford for PPE, list it among preferred subjects that may strengthen an application, though they equally recognise History or Economics.
3. The Importance of Essay-Based Subjects |
Because Politics degrees involve extensive reading, writing and argumentation, universities strongly prefer students who have taken essay-based subjects. AS CIE Politics is itself an excellent example, but History, English Literature, Economics, Sociology, and Philosophy are all highly valued.
Two essay-based subjects at A-level are often considered a standard preparation. If you are only taking one, AS Politics can compensate by demonstrating your ability to construct arguments and evaluate evidence under timed conditions.

Similarly to Oxford, Cambridge does not demand Politics A-level. They seek students who can think analytically across disciplines. Having AS Politics on your application can indicate early engagement with political ideas and structures, which is particularly helpful for the 'Politics' track within HSPS.
6. LSE Politics and International Relations | LSE
