📚 Intermolecular Forces for IGCSE Edexcel Chemistry | IGCSE Edexcel
In the IGCSE Edexcel Chemistry course, understanding intermolecular forces is crucial for explaining the physical properties of simple molecular substances. This revision article covers the key concepts of London forces, permanent dipole-dipole interactions, and hydrogen bonding, along with their effects on boiling points and solubility. Master these points to confidently tackle exam questions on this topic.
1. What Are Intermolecular Forces? |
Intermolecular forces are the attractions that exist between separate molecules. They are much weaker than the strong covalent bonds holding atoms together within a molecule. Despite their weakness, these forces govern whether a substance is a solid, liquid, or gas at a given temperature and determine properties such as melting point, boiling point, and viscosity.
In simple molecular substances, such as water (H₂O), oxygen (O₂), and carbon dioxide (CO₂), the individual molecules are held together in the solid and liquid states by intermolecular forces. When a molecular substance melts or boils, it is these intermolecular forces that must be overcome, not the covalent bonds inside the molecules. Therefore, melting and boiling points are indicators of the strength of intermolecular forces.
2. Covalent Bonds vs. Intermolecular Forces |
A common mistake in exams is confusing intramolecular bonds (covalent bonds) with intermolecular forces. Covalent bonds are the strong electrostatic attractions between the shared electrons and the positive nuclei within a molecule. They require a large amount of energy to break, typically several hundred kJ mol⁻¹. In contrast, intermolecular forces are weak attractions between molecules, with strengths usually in the range of 1-40 kJ mol⁻¹, except for hydrogen bonds which can be stronger.
This distinction explains why simple molecular substances have relatively low melting and boiling points: only weak intermolecular forces need to be overcome during phase changes, not the strong covalent bonds. The covalent bonds remain intact when a molecular liquid boils, and the vapour still consists of individual molecules.
3. London Dispersion Forces (Induced Dipoles) |
London dispersion forces, also called instantaneous dipole-induced dipole forces, are present in all molecules, whether polar or non-polar. They arise from the constant motion of electrons. At any instant, the electron distribution in a molecule may become asymmetric, creating a temporary dipole. This instantaneous dipole can induce a dipole in a neighbouring molecule, leading to an attraction.
London forces are the weakest type of intermolecular force, but they increase in strength with increasing molecular size (number of electrons) and with larger surface area for contact. In non-polar molecules like the halogens (F₂, Cl₂, Br₂, I₂) or alkanes, London forces are the only type of intermolecular attraction. Their boiling points rise as the molecules get larger because more electrons mean larger temporary dipoles and stronger forces.
4. Factors Influencing London Forces |
The strength of London dispersion forces depends primarily on two factors: the number of electrons in the molecule and the shape of the molecule (contact surface area). A larger number of electrons creates a more polarisable electron cloud, meaning instantaneous dipoles become larger and more frequent. This is why, down
