1. Reversible Reactions and the Double Arrow |
A reversible reaction is one that can proceed in both the forward and backward directions under the same conditions. The symbol ⇌ (double half-arrow) is used to represent a reversible reaction. For example, the thermal decomposition of ammonium chloride: NH₄Cl(s) ⇌ NH₃(g) + HCl(g). When heated, it decomposes; upon cooling, the products recombine. Another familiar example is the dehydration/hydration of copper(II) sulfate: CuSO₄·5H₂O(s) ⇌ CuSO₄(s) + 5H₂O(l).
2. The Concept of Dynamic Equilibrium |
When a reversible reaction takes place in a closed system, the forward and reverse reactions eventually proceed at the same rate. At this point, the concentrations of reactants and products remain constant, but both reactions continue to occur. This state is called dynamic equilibrium. It is dynamic because molecules are constantly reacting; it is an equilibrium because macroscopic properties do not change.
3. Characteristics of a System at Equilibrium |
For a system to be at equilibrium: (i) It must be closed – no matter can enter or leave. (ii) The rates of forward and backward reactions are equal. (iii) The concentrations of all reactants and products stay constant (but not necessarily equal). (iv) Equilibrium can be approached from either direction. These characteristics help identify a true equilibrium state.
4. Le Chatelier's Principle |
Le Chatelier's principle states: If a system at dynamic equilibrium is subjected to a change in concentration, temperature, or pressure, the position of equilibrium will shift to counteract the change. This principle allows us to predict the direction of shift without calculating rates.
5. Effect of Changing Concentration |
If the concentration of a reactant is increased, the equilibrium shifts to the right to produce more product and reduce the added reactant. If a product is removed, the equilibrium also shifts to the right to replace it. Conversely, increasing product concentration shifts equilibrium to the left. A classic demonstration uses the equilibrium: Fe³⁺(aq) + SCN⁻(aq) ⇌ FeSCN²⁺(aq) (blood-red). Adding Fe³⁺ or SCN⁻ deepens the red colour; adding a precipitating agent for Fe³⁺ reduces the colour.
6. Effect of Changing Pressure (Gaseous Reactions) |
Pressure changes only affect equilibria involving gases where the total number of gas molecules differs between reactants and products. Increasing pressure favours the side with fewer gas molecules to reduce the pressure. For the Haber process: N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g). On the left there are 4 moles of gas; on the right, 2 moles. High pressure shifts equilibrium to the right, increasing ammonia yield. If both sides have equal numbers of gas molecules, pressure has no effect.
7. Effect of Changing Temperature |
ium based on whether the forward reaction is exothermic or endothermic. If the forward reaction is exothermic (ΔH < 0), increasing temperature favours the endothermic backward reaction, shifting equilibrium left. If forward is endothermic (ΔH > 0), increasing temperature shifts equilibrium right. For the Haber process, N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ thermic, a lower temperature gives a higher equilibrium yield of ammonia, but the rate becomes too slow. Hence, a compromise temperature of about 450 °C is used.
8. The Role of a Catalyst in Equilibrium |
A catalyst provides an alternative reaction pathway with lower activation energy, increasing the rate of both the forward and backward reactions equally. It does not change the position of equilibrium; therefore, the equilibrium yield remains the same. A catalyst is valuable because it allows equilibrium to be reached faster, enabling the process to be run at lower temperatures (giving a better yield without sacrificing rate). Iron is used for the Haber process, and vanadium(V) oxide for the Contact process.
9. The Haber Process: Ammonia Production |
The Haber process synthesises ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen:
N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g) ΔH = -92 kJ mol⁻¹
The forward reaction is exothermic and produces fewer gas molecules. According to Le Chatelier, high pressure and low temperature favour ammonia production. However, low temperatures make the reaction unacceptably slow. The compromise conditions are: 450 °C, 200 atm, and an iron catalyst. The unreacted gases are recycled to improve overall yield.
10. The Contact Process: Sulfuric Acid Manufacture |
The key equilibrium step in the Contact process is the oxidation of SO₂:
2SO₂(g) + O₂(g) ⇌ 2SO₃(g) ΔH = -197 kJ mol⁻¹
The forward reaction is exothermic and reduces the number of gas molecules (3 to 2). According to Le Chatelier, low temperature and high pressure would increase SO₃ yield. However, at low temperatures the rate is too slow, and at very high pressures the extra cost outweighs the benefit because the equilibrium already lies far to the right at moderate conditions. The chosen conditions are: 450 °C, 1–2 atm pressure, and a vanadium(V) oxide (V₂O₅) catalyst.
