📚 Faraday's Law |
Electromagnetic induction is the principle that transformed the world, enabling us to generate and distribute electric power on a massive scale. Discovered by Michael Faraday in 1831, it describes how a changing magnetic field can create an electromotive force (EMF) and drive current in a conductor. For GCSE OCR Physics, understanding Faraday's law is essential not only to explain how generators and transformers work but also to master the core concepts linking magnetism, motion, and electricity.
1. Introduction to Electromagnetic Induction |
When a wire moves across a magnetic field, or when the magnetic field through a coil changes, a potential difference (voltage) is induced across the ends of the wire or coil. If the circuit is complete, this induced potential difference drives a current.
The phenomenon is called electromagnetic induction. It only occurs while there is relative motion between the conductor and the magnetic field, or while the magnetic field itself is changing strength or direction.
2. Magnetic Flux and Flux Density |
To describe induction more precisely, we use the idea of magnetic flux. Magnetic flux () refers to the total number of magnetic field lines passing perpendicularly through a given area. The stronger the field and the larger the area, the greater the flux.
Magnetic flux density (B) is the number of field lines per unit area, measured in tesla (T). It tells us how concentrated the field is. In the GCSE context, a stronger magnet has a higher flux density, producing more lines in a given space.
3. Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction |
Faraday's law states that the size of the induced EMF across a conductor is directly proportional to the rate at which the magnetic flux changes. In a coil of N turns, the induced EMF can be expressed as:
ε = N (ΔΦ / Δt)
Here ε is the induced EMF, N is the number of turns on the coil, ΔΦ is the change in magnetic flux, and Δt is the time interval. The equation emphasises that a faster change in flux (a larger ΔΦ/Δt) produces a larger EMF.
4. Understanding Induced EMF |
Induced EMF is sometimes called induced voltage. Even without a complete circuit, the potential difference appears at the ends of the conductor. When a closed path exists, current flows. It is the rate of change of flux that matters, not simply the presence of a magnetic field.
A simple demonstration: moving a bar magnet quickly into a coil gives a larger deflection on a voltmeter than moving it slowly. Plunging the magnet in and pulling it out produces deflections in opposite directions, showing that the direction of the induced EMF also depends on whether the flux is increasing or decreasing.
5. Lenz's Law and Direction of Induced Current |
Lenz's law gives the direction of the induced current (and hence the polarity of the induced EMF): the induced current always flows in a direction that opposes the change in magnetic flux that produced it. This is a consequence of conservation of energy.
For example, when the north pole of a magnet is pushed into a coil, the coil develops its own north pole at the nearest end to repel the magnet, opposing the increase in flux. When the magnet is withdrawn, the end becomes a south pole to attract the magnet back, opposing the decrease in flux.
6. Factors Affecting Induced EMF |
Several practical factors determine how large the induced EMF will be in a given setup. These can be investigated in the lab using a coil, a magnet, and a sensitive voltmeter.
Speed of relative motion: Moving the magnet (or coil) faster increases the rate of change of flux, giving a larger EMF.
Number of coil turns (N): More turns multiply the effect, as each turn contributes to the total induced EMF.
Strength of the magnetic field (B): A stronger magnet produces a greater flux change per unit movement, so EMF increases.
Cross-sectional area of the coil: A larger area intercepts more flux, raising the potential for a bigger change in flux.
7. The Generator Effect |
When a coil of wire is rotated steadily in a magnetic field, the flux linkage changes continuously, producing an alternating EMF. This is the generator effect, the basis of most electricity generation. As the coil turns, the induced EMF varies sinusoidally, reaching zero when the coil is horizontal (maximum flux, no change at that instant) and peaking when the coil is vertical (maximum rate of flux change).
Using slip rings and brushes, an alternating current (ac) is delivered to the external circuit. A simple ac generator demonstrates this beautifully, and Faraday's law quantitatively predicts the output voltage waveform.
8. Transformers and Faraday's Law |
A transformer uses Faraday's law to change the size of an alternating voltage. It consists of two coils wound around a laminated iron core. An alternating current in the primary coil creates a changing magnetic flux in the core. This changing flux passes through the secondary coil, inducing an alternating EMF across its terminals.
The iron core guides and concentrates the magnetic flux so that nearly all the flux produced by the primary coil links with the secondary coil. This makes energy transfer highly efficient.
9. Transformer Equation |
For an ideal transformer with 100% efficiency, the ratio of the potential differences across the coils is equal to the ratio of the number of turns:
Vp / Vs = Np / Ns
Here Vp and Vs are the primary and secondary voltages, Np and Ns are the primary and secondary numbers of turns. A step-up transformer (Ns > Np) increases voltage, while a step-down transformer (Ns < Np) decreases voltage.
Because power input approximately equals power output, we also have Vp Ip = Vs Is. This means that if the voltage is stepped up, the current is stepped down, and vice versa.
10. Practical Applications and Safety |
Transformers are crucial in the National Grid. Power stations generate electricity at around 25 kV, which is stepped up to 400 kV for efficient long-distance transmission. High voltage reduces current for the same power, cutting I²R heat losses in cables. Near homes and factories, substations step the voltage down to safe levels (230 V in the UK).
Other everyday applications include mobile phone chargers, induction hobs (where a changing magnetic field induces eddy currents in the pan base), and wireless charging pads, all of which rely on Faraday's principle.
Safety considerations with transformers and high voltages include proper insulation, earthing, and the use of fuses or circuit breakers. The laminated core also reduces unwanted eddy currents that would otherwise cause overheating.
