📚 GCSE OCR Economics: High-Frequency Exam Topics Summary | GCSE OCR

This article summarises the most frequently tested topics in the GCSE OCR Economics specification, covering both microeconomic and macroeconomic concepts. Understanding these key areas and the precise terminology required by examiners will help you prepare efficiently and boost your confidence.

1. Scarcity and Opportunity Cost |

Scarcity is the fundamental economic problem: finite resources cannot satisfy unlimited human wants. Because of scarcity, individuals, firms, and governments must make choices. Every choice involves an opportunity cost – the value of the next best alternative forgone.

Opportunity cost is not simply about money; it includes time, other goods, or services sacrificed. For example, if a government chooses to spend more on healthcare, the opportunity cost might be less spending on education. Consumers constantly trade off one purchase against another.

The Production Possibility Curve (PPC) illustrates the maximum combinations of two goods an economy can produce when all resources are fully and efficiently employed. Points inside the curve indicate underutilisation of resources; points outside are currently unattainable. An outward shift of the PPC represents economic growth, caused by more resources or better technology.

2. Demand and Supply |

The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus, as the price of a good falls, the quantity demanded increases, leading to a downward-sloping demand curve. Factors shifting the demand curve include changes in income, tastes, the price of substitutes or complements, population size, and advertising.

The law of supply states that, ceteris paribus, as the price rises, the quantity supplied increases, producing an upward-sloping supply curve. Shifts in supply are caused by changes in production costs, technology, indirect taxes, subsidies, and the number of firms in the market.

Market equilibrium occurs where the demand and supply curves intersect. At the equilibrium price, quantity demanded equals quantity supplied. A price set above equilibrium creates excess supply (a surplus), putting downward pressure on price. A price below equilibrium creates excess demand (a shortage), pushing price up. In free markets, the price mechanism clears surpluses and shortages.

3. Price Elasticity of Demand (PED) |

Price elasticity of demand (PED) measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in price. It is calculated as the percentage change in quantity demanded divided by the percentage change in price.

PED = %ΔQd ÷ %ΔP

c. A perfectly inelastic demand is a vertical line; perfectly elastic demand is horizontal.

Determinants of PED include the availability of substitutes (more substitutes make demand more elastic), the degree of necessity (necessities tend to be inelastic), the proportion of income spent (a larger share leads to greater elasticity), and the time period considered (demand is more elastic in the long run).

The relationship between PED and total revenue is a key exam point. If demand is elastic, raising the price will decrease total revenue. If demand is inelastic, raising the price will increase total revenue. Firms use this insight to set prices strategically.

4. Market Failure |

Market failure occurs when the price mechanism leads to an inefficient allocation of resources, causing a net loss in social welfare. GCSE OCR Economics focuses on four main types: externalities, public goods, information asymmetries, and market power.

Externalities are spill-over effects on third parties. Negative externalities (e.g. air pollution from factories) mean the social cost exceeds the private cost, leading to overproduction. Positive externalities (e.g. the wider benefits of vaccination) mean the social benefit exceeds the private benefit, leading to underproduction.

Public goods are both non-excludable (impossible to prevent free riders) and non-rival (consumption by one person does not reduce availability for another). Examples include street lighting and flood defences. Private firms will not supply them profitably, so the free market fails.

Information asymmetry occurs when one party has more or better information than the other. This can lead to adverse selection (bad-quality goods drive out good ones) or moral hazard (taking excessive risks because the costs are borne by another). The used car market is the classic example.
