1. Why Mock Papers Matter |
A mock paper turns passive revision into active retrieval. Reading notes creates a feeling of familiarity, but only writing answers under timed conditions reveals whether you can actually recall, apply and structure biological knowledge when it counts.
Mock papers also expose the gap between what you know and what you can communicate. Many students understand osmosis perfectly yet lose marks because they write 'water goes in' instead of 'water moves down a water potential gradient from a region of higher water potential to a region of lower water potential across a partially permeable membrane'.
The third benefit is strategic: a mock shows you which topics deserve your remaining revision hours. If you lose six marks on genetics and four on practical data analysis, your next week of study should not begin with biological molecules.
2. Overview of the Mock Paper |
The full-length paper consists of 9 questions with a total of 50 marks, to be completed in 75 minutes. That works out at roughly 1.5 minutes per mark, which leaves very little thinking time for the longer extended-response questions.
Questions cover core topics: biological molecules, cell ultrastructure, membrane transport, enzymes, DNA replication, protein synthesis, mitosis, monohybrid inheritance, and practical-based data analysis. The balance deliberately mirrors the specification, so a weak area cannot be hidden.
| Q1 | Biological molecules
| Q2 | Cell ultrastructure
| Q3 | Membrane transport
| Q4 | Enzymes and practical work 酶与实验 | 6 |
| Q5 | DNA replication DNA
| Q6 | Protein synthesis
| Q7 | Mitosis and the cell cycle
| Q8 | Monohybrid inheritance
| Q9 | Practical-based data analysis
Command words include 'describe', 'explain', 'calculate' and 'suggest'. Each command word demands a different answer structure, and ignoring the command word is one of the most common ways to lose easy marks.
3. Question 1: Biological Molecules |
Q1 opens with food tests. The mark scheme rewards the reagent, the condition and the result, so a full-mark answer names all three. 'Iodine solution turns starch blue-black' earns the mark; 'iodine tests for starch' does not, because no result is stated.
Starch: add iodine solution in potassium iodide → blue-black colour.
Reducing sugar: add Benedict's solution and heat in a water bath → brick-red precipitate.
Protein: add Biuret reagent → purple or lilac colour.
Lipid: add ethanol then water and shake → white emulsion.
The second part of Q1 asks why water is essential to life. Strong answers link structure to function rather than listing properties in isolation: water is a polar molecule, so it acts as a universal solvent for ionic and polar substances such as glucose, amino acids and ions, allowing metabolic reactions to occur in solution.
Water also has a high specific heat capacity because of the many hydrogen bonds between molecules, which buffers organisms against sudden temperature change, and a high latent heat of vaporisation, which makes sweating and transpiration effective cooling mechanisms. Cohesion between water molecules supports the continuous columns in xylem.
4. Question 2: Cell Ultrastructure |
Q2 shows an electron micrograph of a eukaryotic cell and asks candidates to identify three organelles and state one function for each. The trap here is confusing organelles that look alike at low magnification, especially rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, and the Golgi apparatus.
Learn structures as function-machines: mitochondria have a folded inner membrane forming cristae, increasing surface area for the electron transport chain and oxidative phosphorylation; the nucleus contains chromatin and a nucleolus, where ribosomal RNA is made and ribosome subunits are assembled.
Magnification and resolution questions recur every year. Magnification is how many times larger the image is than the object; resolution is the ability to distinguish two separate points as separate. Resolution is limited by the wavelength of the radiation used, which is why electron microscopes resolve finer detail than light microscopes.
magnification = image size ÷ actual size
as 40 mm on a print with a magnification of ×2000 must be reported as 20 μm, not 0.02 mm.
5. Question 3: Membrane Transport |
Q3 compares diffusion, facilitated diffusion, osmosis and active transport. The examiner wants a structural explanation, so link each process to the fluid mosaic model: the phospholipid bilayer is hydrophobic in its interior, which restricts the passage of large or polar molecules.
Facilitated diffusion uses channel proteins for charged particles such as K⁺ and Cl⁻, and carrier proteins for molecules such as glucose. It is passive, moving down the concentration gradient, and does not require ATP.
Active transport uses carrier proteins and ATP hydrolysis to move substances against their concentration gradient. In the ileum, sodium ions are actively pumped out of the epithelial cell into the blood, creating a sodium gradient that drives the co-transport of glucose into the cell against its own concentration gradient.
Osmosis answers must mention the partially permeable membrane and the water potential gradient in one continuous statement. A typical two-mark answer reads: 'water moves from a region of higher water potential to a region of lower water potential through the partially permeable membrane.'
6. Question 4: Enzymes and Practical Work | 第 4 题:酶与实验
Q4 provides a graph of product formed against time for an enzyme-catalysed reaction at three temperatures, then asks candidates to explain the differences. The key skill is using data from the graph, not just stating general theory.
At the optimum temperature the curve is steepest and reaches the highest plateau first, because more enzyme-substrate complexes form per unit time. At a low temperature the curve rises slowly but may still reach the same final value, since the enzyme is not denatured, only less kinetically active.
At high temperature the curve plateaus at a lower value because the hydrogen bonds and ionic bonds maintaining the tertiary structure break. The active site changes shape, substrate molecules no longer fit, and the enzyme is denatured.
Candidates lose marks by writing 'the enzyme dies' - enzymes are molecules and are not alive. Write 'the enzyme is denatured' instead. Also avoid claiming that denaturation is always reversible; for most enzymes it is permanent.
Rate calculations require the gradient of the initial, linear portion of the curve, not the plateau. Use the units given on the axes, for example cm³ min⁻¹ or μg s⁻¹, and always show the substitution.
Q5 tests semi-conservative replication. A complete answer describes the sequence of events: DNA helicase breaks the hydrogen bonds between complementary base pairs, and the double helix unwinds, exposing both strands as templates.
Free activated nucleotides then pair with the exposed bases by complementary base pairing: adenine with thymine, and cytosine with guanine. DNA polymerase catalyses the formation of phosphodiester bonds between adjacent nucleotides, forming the sugar-phosphate backbone of the new strand.
Because each new molecule contains one original strand and one newly synthesised strand, the process is described as semi-conservative. This is what makes accurate copying, and therefore inheritance, possible.
The most frequent error is writing that 'the DNA unzips and new bases join'. This earns nothing beyond one possible mark, because it names no enzyme, no bond and no base-pairing rule. Name the enzyme, name the bond, name the template.
8. Question 6: Protein Synthesis |
Q6 moves from gene to polypeptide. Transcription occurs in the nucleus: DNA helicase separates the strands, and RNA polymerase catalyses the formation of phosphodiester bonds between RNA nucleotides, using the template strand to build a complementary mRNA copy in which uracil replaces thymine.
The mRNA then leaves the nucleus through a nuclear pore and binds to a ribosome. Transfer RNA molecules carry specific amino acids and have anticodons complementary to the mRNA codons; the ribosome holds the mRNA and tRNA together so that peptide bonds can form between adjacent amino acids.
The genetic code is described as a triplet code, degenerate and non-overlapping. Degenerate means that most amino acids are coded for by more than one codon, which reduces the effect of some point mutations on the final protein.
A common mistake is mixing up codon and anticodon, or stating that tRNA carries the genetic code. The code resides in the mRNA, read in triplets, and the tRNA is the adapter that converts nucleotide sequence into amino acid sequence.
9. Question 7: Mitosis and the Cell Cycle |
Q7 asks candidates to name the stages visible in a series of diagrams and give the role of mitosis in a named organism. Prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase must be identified by chromosome behaviour, not by cell shape.
Prophase: chromosomes condense and become visible as two sister chromatids; the nuclear envelope breaks down.
Metaphase: chromosomes line up on the equator of the cell and attach to spindle fibres at the centromere.
Anaphase: centromeres split and sister chromatids are pulled to opposite poles.
Telophase and cytokinesis: nuclei reform, chromosomes uncoil, and the cytoplasm divides.
The roles of mitosis are growth, repair of damaged tissue and asexual reproduction. Cancer is best explained as uncontrolled mitosis caused by mutations in genes that regulate the cell cycle, producing a mass of cells that invade surrounding tissue.
Plotting a mitotic index is a popular practical question. Count the number of cells with visible chromosomes and divide by the total number of cells counted, then multiply by 100 to express it as a percentage. State that the root tip is used because it contains meristematic tissue, where cells are actively dividing.
10. Question 8: Monohybrid Inheritance |
Q8 presents a family pedigree for cystic fibrosis, an autosomal recessive condition. The first step is always to define the alleles clearly: let A represent the dominant normal allele and a represent the recessive allele causing the condition.
Affected individuals must be homozygous recessive, aa. Unaffected individuals may be AA or Aa, and a key skill is deducing which genotype is the only possibility from the pedigree - for example, an unaffected person with an affected parent must be heterozygous.
When two carriers have children, the expected cross is Aa × Aa:
| A | a | |
| A | AA | Aa |
| a | Aa | aa |
The expected phenotypic ratio is therefore 3 unaffected : 1 affected, and the probability that any one child is affected is 0.25 or 25%. Probability is not affected by previous births, so a couple who already have one affected child still face the same 25% chance next time.
For a two-mark genetic cross, always show the parental genotypes, the gametes, the offspring genotypes (a Punnett square is acceptable) and the final ratio or probability. Marks are awarded for correct symbols and consistent logic, not only for the final answer.
11. Question 9: Practical-Based Data Analysis |
