This mock paper walkthrough covers the core topics tested in the CCEA GCSE Accounting unit test. By working through typical question styles and examiner expectations, you will sharpen your technique in business documents, double-entry, trial balances, adjustments, final accounts and ratios. Each section breaks down a key area, highlights common pitfalls, and shows how to apply your knowledge to score full marks.

1. Business Documents and Source Records |

In CCEA GCSE Accounting, you must be able to identify common business documents such as purchase invoices, sales invoices, credit notes, debit notes and receipts. A purchase invoice is received from a supplier when goods are bought on credit; it triggers the recording of a credit purchase and a trade payable. A sales invoice is issued to a customer for credit sales, creating a sales ledger account and increasing trade receivables.

Credit notes are used to record returns inwards (purchases returns) or allowances, reducing the amount owed to suppliers. Debit notes may be issued to suppliers to request a credit note. A common mistake is to confuse the double-entry for returns: a credit note received means you debit the supplier's account (trade payables) and credit purchases returns.

When analysing a transaction, always decide which document is involved and whether the business is the buyer or seller. This determines whether the amount is added to purchases or sales, and to the respective control accounts.

2. Double-Entry Principles |

Every transaction affects at least two accounts. The core rule is that for every debit entry there must be an equal credit entry. Assets, expenses and drawings increase with debits and decrease with credits. Liabilities, capital and income increase with credits and decrease with debits. The mnemonic 'DEAD CLIC' helps: Debit Expenses, Assets, Drawings; Credit Liabilities, Income, Capital.

For example, when a business buys inventory on credit, the purchases account is debited (expense increase) and the trade payables account is credited (liability increase). If the inventory is later paid for by cheque, the bank account is credited (asset decrease). A common error is to debit cash purchases to trade payables — always ask: did we receive goods, and are we paying now or later?

3. The Trial Balance and Errors |

A trial balance is a list of all ledger balances at a particular date, used to check the arithmetic accuracy of the double-entry system. If total debits equal total credits, the books are said to be in balance. However, a balanced trial balance does not prove that there are no errors. Some errors are not revealed: errors of omission, commission, principle, original entry and compensating errors.

For instance, an error of principle occurs when an item is posted to the wrong type of account, such as debiting a non-current asset purchase to the purchases expense account. This still yields equal debits and credits but distorts profit and asset values. An error of omission means the whole transaction is missing — it does not affect the trial balance totals.

When a trial balance does not agree, a suspense account is used temporarily. Common causes: single-entry, posting a debit as a credit, or a transposition error. In an exam, you may be asked to correct errors and redraft the trial balance, so practise journal entries to clear the suspense account.

4. Journals and Day Books |

Day books are books of prime entry. The main day books are the sales day book (for credit sales), purchases day book (for credit purchases), returns inwards day book, returns outwards day book, and the cash book (which also acts as a ledger account). The general journal is used for non-routine entries such as depreciation adjustments, correction of errors, and purchases of non-current assets on credit.

Entries in day books are totalled periodically and posted to the relevant ledger accounts. For example, the total of the sales day book is posted to the debit side of the trade receivables control account and the credit side of the sales account. Individual entries are posted to customers' personal accounts in the sales ledger. This division of work reduces errors and helps with internal control.

5. Accruals and Prepayments |

Accruals and prepayments are adjustments made at the end of an accounting period to ensure expenses and income are matched to the period in which they are incurred or earned. An accrual for expenses means an expense incurred but not yet paid; it is added to the expense in the income statement and shown as a current liability. A prepayment is an expense paid in advance; it is deducted from the expense and shown as a current asset.

For example, a business pays rent of £12,000 during the year. At the start of the year there was a prepayment of £2,000, and at the end there is an accrual of £1,500. The charge to the income statement is:

Expense charge = Amount paid – opening prepayment + closing accrual

£12,000 – £2,000 + £1,500 = £11,500

In the statement of financial position, the £1,500 accrual appears as a current liability, and there is no prepayment. Students often forget to reverse the opening prepayment — always incorporate opening balances when calculating the charge.

6. Irrecoverable Debts and Allowance for Doubtful Debts |

When a customer's debt is definitely uncollectible, it is written off as an irrecoverable debt. The journal entry is: debit irrecoverable debts expense, credit trade receivables. An allowance for doubtful debts is a provision against possible future losses. The allowance is adjusted at the year end: an increase in allowance is an additional expense (debit), while a decrease is recorded as income (credit).

In the statement of financial position, trade receivables are shown net of both irrecoverable debts written off and the closing allowance for doubtful debts. It is critical to remember that the income statement only records the movement in the allowance — the increase or decrease from the previous period — not the full closing allowance.

A typical exam question gives the opening allowance, the irrecoverable debts written off during the year, and the required closing allowance. You must calculate the expense for the year by comparing the required closing allowance with the net balance after write-offs and any surviving opening allowance.

7. Depreciation | 折旧

e. Two methods are tested: straight-line and reducing balance. Straight-line method: (Cost – Residual value) / Useful life. Reducing balance method: Net book value × Depreciation rate % cquisition, depreciation is often pro-rated if the asset was not owned for the whole year.

The double-entry for depreciation is: debit depreciation expense (income statement), credit accumulated depreciation. Accumulated depreciation is a contra-asset account; the net book value equals cost minus accumulated depreciation. In the statement of financial position, non-current assets are shown at net book value.

Net book value = Cost – Accumulated depreciation

When an asset is sold, you must calculate the profit or loss on disposal by comparing the sale proceeds with the net book value at the date of sale. Remove the asset's cost and accumulated depreciation from the books and record any profit or loss.
