1. Official Specification and Past Papers |
The Eduqas GCSE Music specification is your roadmap. Download it free from the Eduqas website and read the assessment grids for all three components: Performing (30%), Composing (30%) and Appraising (40%). The specification lists every musical element, context and piece of vocabulary you can be examined on, so nothing on the exam paper should ever feel completely unfamiliar.
The Appraising paper is built on four Areas of Study: Musical Forms and Devices, Music for Ensemble, Film Music, and Popular Music. Within those areas you must know two set works in detail. Use the specification as a checklist rather than a novel: print it, highlight each term, and tick it off once you can define it, hear it and write about it confidently.
Past papers and mark schemes are the second essential resource. Practise exam questions under timed conditions first, then mark your own answers against the scheme and note exactly which words the examiner rewarded. Examiner reports are especially valuable because they reveal the most common mistakes candidates make and describe what a top-band answer actually looks like.
| Component | 环节 | Weighting | 占比 | What it tests | 考查重点 |
| Component 2: Composing | 环节二:作曲 | 30% | Two compositions, one free and one to a brief | 两部作品:自由创作与命题创作 |
2. Areas of Study: What You Must Cover |
Musical Forms and Devices covers structure, tonality and compositional technique from the Baroque to the present day. Expect binary, ternary, rondo and variation forms, plus devices such as sequence, imitation, ostinato and pedal. J.S. Bach's Badinerie is the classic set work here, so learn its phrase structure bar by bar.
Music for Ensemble focuses on texture, timbre and the way instruments or voices interact, drawing on chamber music, musical theatre, jazz and other ensemble traditions. Film Music asks you to analyse how composers use melody, harmony, instrumentation and technology to support moving images, including devices such as leitmotif and underscoring.
Popular Music ranges from blues and early rock 'n' roll to contemporary pop and fusion. Toto's Africa is the set work most commonly studied here, and it rewards close attention to groove, harmonic loops, studio production and vocal layering. For each area, build a one-page summary of typical features, key vocabulary and two or three listening examples.
3. Core Textbooks and Revision Guides |
The most widely used print resources for this course are the Eduqas-approved student book and revision guide published by Illuminate Publishing, and the WJEC/Eduqas revision guide published by Rhinegold. Both follow the specification closely and include listening activities, practice questions and model answers. Always check that you have the current edition, since specifications are periodically updated.
A general theory reference is also essential, even for strong performers. Eric Taylor's AB Guide to Music Theory, together with the graded ABRSM theory workbooks, gives you the vocabulary for intervals, chords, cadences, keys and notation that examiners expect in written answers.
Use these books as reference tools, not as novels to read cover to cover. When a past-paper question exposes a gap - say, you cannot explain a perfect cadence or describe a walking bass - open the relevant chapter, make a one-paragraph note in your own words, then return to the question and answer it again.
4. Free and Low-Cost Online Platforms |
BBC Bitesize provides free, specification-matched revision pages for GCSE Music, including clear summaries of musical elements and short listening tests. The Eduqas website also hosts free digital educational resources, sample assessment materials and past papers, all of which are written by the exam board itself and therefore match the exam style exactly.
For interactive teaching and testing, Focus on Sound (part of the MusicFirst family) is widely used in schools and includes instrument demonstrations, set-work modules and auto-marked quizzes. Many schools already hold a licence, so ask your teacher for the login before paying for anything yourself.
YouTube and streaming services are powerful if used actively. Search for annotated score videos of the set works, compare two different recordings of the same piece, and build a private playlist for each Area of Study. Public-domain scores of Baroque and Classical repertoire can be downloaded free from IMSLP for score-reading practice.
5. Ear Training and Music Theory Tools |
Dictation and aural identification are examined skills, not talents you either have or lack. Free sites such as musictheory.net and Teoria, plus apps such as Tenuto, Functional Ear Trainer and Perfect Ear, let you drill intervals, chords, cadences and rhythmic dictation in five-minute bursts on a phone.
Anchor your interval recognition to real music you know, and always check the arithmetic. A perfect fifth, for example, can be counted in semitones, which makes it easy to verify by eye as well as by ear:
Perfect 5th = 7 semitones = 3 whole steps + 1 semitone
Pair every listening exercise with notation. When you identify a descending major third or a rising sequence, write it down in staff notation or at least in solfège. This habit directly improves both the dictation questions and the quality of your written analysis, because it forces you to convert sound into precise vocabulary.
6. Listening and Appraising Resources |
The single best listening resource is the annotated score of each set work, paired with a high-quality recording. Work through the piece in sections of eight to sixteen bars, labelling structure, texture, tonality, instrumentation, dynamics and any distinctive devices. Then close the score and try to describe the same passage from memory.
Build a listening log for every piece you study, including your own performance repertoire. A simple four-column table - bar numbers, what happens, musical element, exam-style sentence - turns passive listening into exam-ready writing. Examiners reward accurate technical language, not vague impressions such as 'it sounds sad'.
Comparison is a high-value skill in the Appraising paper. Take two recordings of the same work, or two works from different Areas of Study, and write a paragraph comparing their tempo, timbre and texture using connectives such as 'whereas', 'in contrast' and 'similarly'. This is exactly the structure of extended-response questions.
7. Performing Component Resources |
Your instrumental or vocal teacher remains the most valuable performing resource. Choose repertoire that shows a range of technique but is comfortably within your control, since accuracy, expression and fluency all carry marks. Ask your teacher to check the difficulty level against the standard expected by the specification before you commit to a piece.
Recording equipment matters more than most candidates expect. A phone microphone placed too close will distort loud passages, while a room with heavy reverb hides detail. Record a rehearsal every fortnight, listen back with the mark scheme beside you, and keep a short diary of what improved and what still needs slow practice.
Metronome apps, backing tracks and ensemble opportunities all support this component. Join a school ensemble, a local band or a choir: the ensemble performance is a separate assessed requirement, and playing with others develops the balance and listening skills that solo practice alone cannot build.
8. Composing Component Resources: DAWs and Notation Software | 作曲环节资源:DAW 与记谱软件
Two kinds of software dominate this component. Notation programs such as MuseScore (free), Dorico SE, Sibelius, Flat.io and Noteflight produce the printed score that examiners read. Digital audio workstations such as GarageBand, Logic Pro, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase, Soundtrap and BandLab produce the audio realisation that lets them hear your intentions.
Use a simple workflow. Sketch a four- or eight-bar motif first, then develop it through sequence, inversion, rhythmic augmentation or diminution. Plan the structure on paper before you open the software, and read the set brief twice, highlighting the required forces, length and style so that nothing is missed.
Presentation quality is assessed. Check that your score has a tempo marking, dynamics, articulation, correct clefs, a key signature and the right number of bars per system. Save everything to cloud storage and keep dated copies, and if you submit an audio recording, remove background noise and balance the levels before export.
