1. Types of Networks |
A Personal Area Network (PAN) connects devices within an individual's immediate vicinity, typically using Bluetooth or USB, such as a smartphone syncing with a wearable.
A Local Area Network (LAN) covers a small geographical area like a home, school, or office building, usually managed by a single entity and offering high data transfer rates via Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
A Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) spans a city or large campus, connecting multiple LANs, often using fibre-optic cables.
A Wide Area Network (WAN) connects networks over large geographical distances, such as across countries or continents; the Internet is the largest WAN. WANs typically rely on leased telecommunication lines and routers.
2. Network Models: OSI vs TCP/IP | 网络模型:OSI与TCP/IP
The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model has seven layers: Physical (hardware, cables), Data Link (MAC addresses, switches), Network (IP addressing, routing), Transport (TCP/UDP, error recovery), Session (dialog control), Presentation (translation, encryption), and Application (HTTP, SMTP). It is a conceptual framework used as a reference.
The TCP/IP model, often called the Internet protocol suite, is more practical and has four layers: Network Access (Link) layer combines physical and data link, Internet layer handles IP addressing, Transport layer uses TCP and UDP, and Application layer includes protocols like HTTP, FTP, DNS. IB candidates should be able to compare the two models.
3. Network Topologies |
Star topology: all devices connect to a central switch or hub. It is easy to install and manage; failure of a single cable does not affect the whole network, but if the central device fails, the network goes down.
Bus topology: all nodes share a single backbone cable. It uses less cable but is vulnerable to collisions and a single break in the backbone can disable the entire network. Rarely used now.
Ring topology: each device connects to two others forming a closed loop; data travels in one direction. It can be efficient but a break in the ring disrupts the whole network unless a dual ring is used.
Mesh topology: every node is interconnected, providing high redundancy and reliability. Often used in WANs or data centres but is expensive due to cabling and ports.
The table below summarises key comparisons:
| Topology | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|
| Star | Easy troubleshoot, scalable | Single point of failure |
| Bus | Simple, cheap | Collisions, hard to isolate fault |
| Ring | Equal access, no collisions | Break impacts full network |
| Mesh | Fault tolerant | Costly, complex |
4. Networking Devices |
A Network Interface Card (NIC) allows a device to connect to a network; it has a unique MAC address. Each NIC operates at the data link layer.
A hub is a simple device that broadcasts data to all ports, operating at the physical layer. It is obsolete due to unnecessary traffic and collisions.
A switch is smarter: it learns MAC addresses and forwards frames only to the destination port, reducing collisions and improving efficiency. It works at layer 2 (data link).
A router connects different networks and forwards packets based on IP addresses; it operates at layer 3 (network). Routers are essential for connecting LANs to the Internet.
Modems (modulator-demodulator) convert digital signals to analog for transmission over telephone lines or coaxial cables, and vice versa. Modern broadband uses combined modem-routers.
5. Key Protocols |
TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) provides reliable, connection-oriented data delivery with error checking and flow control. It ensures data arrives in order and without loss, typically used for web browsing, email, and file transfers.
UDP (User Datagram Protocol) is connectionless and faster but does not guarantee delivery. It is suitable for live streaming, voice over IP, and DNS queries where speed matters more than reliability.
UDP(用户数据报协议)是无连接的,速度更快但不保证送达。
HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) operates at the application layer and governs web page requests and responses. HTTPS adds TLS/SSL encryption for security.
HTTP(超文本传输协议)工作在应用层,管理网页的请求和响应。
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is used to transfer files between a client and a server. It uses two connections: control (port 21) and data (port 20).
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
