📚 GCSE WJEC Philosophy: Core Knowledge Overview | GCSE WJEC

GCSE WJEC Philosophy is designed to develop critical thinking and analytical skills through the study of fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, and morality. This revision guide distills the core knowledge across all specification areas — from ancient Greek thought to contemporary ethical dilemmas. By mastering these key concepts, you will be well prepared for both Philosophical Enquiry and Applied Ethics papers.

GCSE WJEC

1. What is Philosophy? |

Philosophy, meaning 'love of wisdom', is the rational investigation of the most fundamental questions concerning reality, knowledge, and how we should live. Unlike empirical sciences, philosophy often proceeds through conceptual analysis and logical argument rather than experiment. The WJEC course asks you to engage directly with classic arguments, evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, and form your own reasoned judgements.

A key philosophical skill is the ability to recognise structure: premises leading to a conclusion. When you evaluate an argument, you question whether the premises are true and whether the conclusion follows. This technique underpins every topic in the specification.

2. Plato’s Theory of Forms |

Plato argued that the world we perceive with our senses is merely a shadow of a higher reality — the world of Forms. A Form is an eternal, unchanging, perfect archetype of a concept (such as Justice, Beauty, or a Circle). Individual objects in the physical world derive their characteristics by participating in these Forms.

The Analogy of the Cave illustrates this: prisoners chained in a cave see only shadows on the wall, mistaking them for reality. A philosopher is like an escaped prisoner who sees the real objects and eventually the sun (the Form of the Good). The Form of the Good illuminates all other Forms and is the ultimate source of truth and value.

3. Aristotle’s Four Causes |

Aristotle rejected Plato’s separate world of Forms and instead focused on explaining change and purpose in the natural world. His Four Causes provide a complete account of why a thing exists: the material cause (what it is made of), the formal cause (its essence or defining shape), the efficient cause (the agent that brought it into being), and the final cause (its purpose or telos).

For a marble statue, the material cause is the marble, the formal cause is the shape of the figure, the efficient cause is the sculptor, and the final cause is to honour a god or beautify a temple. Aristotle believed that everything in nature has a final cause, including human beings, whose telos is eudaimonia (flourishing) through living a life of reason.

4. Rationalism vs. Empiricism |

Epistemology, the study of knowledge, asks where our concepts and knowledge come from. Rationalists, like Descartes, argue that reason is the primary source of knowledge. We can gain certain truths through a priori reasoning, independent of sense experience. Descartes' phrase 'I think, therefore I am' is reached by pure rational intuition.

Empiricists, such as Locke and Hume, claim that all knowledge ultimately comes from sense experience. The mind at birth is a tabula rasa (blank slate). Even complex ideas are built from simple impressions. Hume argued that rationalists mistake relations of ideas (true by definition, like 'a triangle has three sides') for substantive knowledge about the world, which must be based on matters of fact from experience.

RationalismEmpiricism
Innate ideas possibleNo innate ideas; mind is a blank slate
Reason as the primary sourceSense experience as the foundation

5. The Design Argument |

The Teleological Argument, or Design Argument, claims that the complexity and apparent purpose in the natural world indicate the existence of an intelligent designer — God. William Paley’s analogy of the watchmaker is central: if you found a watch on a heath, its ordered complexity would lead you to infer a watchmaker; similarly, the natural world, with far greater complexity, leads to the inference of a divine creator.

Hume’s criticisms, written before Paley, remain powerful: the analogy is weak because the universe is not sufficiently like a machine; even if design is granted, it could point to multiple gods, an apprentice god, or a mortal designer; and the existence of natural evils suggests the designer is not all-loving or all-powerful. Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection later provided a naturalistic explanation for apparent design, removing the need for a designer.

Paley’s logical structure: P1: Artifacts exhibit complexity and purpose and are made by a designer. P2: The universe resembles an artifact. C: Therefore, the universe probably has a designer.

6. The Cosmological Argument |

The Cosmological Argument seeks to prove God’s existence from the fact that the universe exists rather than not. Aquinas presented the 'First Cause' argument: everything in the world is caused by something else; this chain of causation cannot regress infinitely; therefore, there must be a first, uncaused cause — God. Another version is the 'Argument from Contingency': because everything in the universe is contingent (depends on something else for its existence), there must be a necessary being that depends on nothing else.

Critics ask: why must the chain terminate in God? Could the universe itself be the necessary being, or could there be an infinite regress of causes? Hume argued that the idea of a necessary being is incoherent — we can always conceive of any being not existing. The argument may also commit the fallacy of composition: just because every part of the universe has a cause, it does not follow that the universe as a whole has a cause.

7. The Problem of Evil |

If God is omnipotent, omnibenevolent, and omniscient, why does evil exist? This is the logical problem of evil, formulated by Epicurus and later J.L. Mackie. The inconsistent triad states that the following three propositions cannot all be true: God is all-powerful; God is all-loving; evil exists. If any two are true, the third must be false.

Theodicies attempt to reconcile God’s existence with evil. Augustine’s theodicy argues that evil is a privation — the absence of good — and arises from the misuse of free will by angels and humans. The world was created perfect but fell. Irenaeus’ soul-making theodicy sees evil as necessary for moral and spiritual development; through suffering and freely choosing good, we grow into the likeness of God. Both theodicies face challenges: Augustine’s relies on a literal Fall and fails to explain natural evil; Irenaeus’ appears to accept that some suffering is never overcome and may not justify the scale of evil.

8. Religious Experience |

Religious experiences, such as visions, voices, or a sense of the numinous, are offered as direct evidence for God’s existence. William James identified four characteristics of mystical experiences: ineffability (cannot be adequately described), noetic quality (deep insights), transiency (temporary), and passivity (felt as being controlled by a higher power). If a person has a genuine experience of God, then God exists — this is the principle of credulity defended by Richard Swinburne.

Sceptics argue that religious experiences can be explained naturalistically: they may result from brain abnormalities, psychological suggestion, or wishful thinking. The fact that different religions produce conflicting experiences (a Christian sees Jesus, a Hindu sees Krishna) undermines the claim that they all point to the same ultimate reality. Moreover, the principle of credulity is too generous; we do not normally accept every perceptual experience at face value without corroboration.

9. Mind-Body Dualism and Materialism |

The mind-body problem concerns the relationship between mental states and physical brain states. Substance dualism, associated with Descartes, claims that the mind and body are two distinct substances: the mind is non-physical, unextended thinking substance; the body is physical, extended substance. The 'conceivability argument' says that because we can clearly conceive of the mind existing without the body, it is possible, and therefore they are separate. The 'divisibility argument' claims the body is divisible but the mind is unitary, so they must be different.

Materialism (or physicalism) holds that mental states are identical with or supervene on brain states. The 'identity theory' says that types of mental events are identical to types of brain events (e.g., pain just is C-fibres firing). A major challenge to dualism is the interaction problem: how can a non-physical mind cause changes in the physical body? Princess Elizabeth of Bohemia pressed Descartes on this, and it remains a significant weakness. For materialism, the problem is explaining subjective, first-person experience (qualia) — why there is 'something it is like' to be in pain.

10. Utilitarianism |

Utilitarianism is a consequentialist ethical theory: the right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Jeremy Bentham proposed a hedonistic calculus based on seven criteria — intensity, duration, certainty, propinquity, fecundity, purity, and extent — to measure pleasure and pain quantitatively. For Bentham, all pleasures are equal in quality; 'pushpin is as good as poetry'.

John Stuart Mill modified Bentham’s theory by introducing higher and lower pleasures. Intellectual and moral pleasures are qualitatively superior to bodily ones. Mill famously wrote, 'It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied.' Act utilitarianism assesses each individual action; rule utilitarianism (such as that developed by Mill) argues that we should follow general rules that, if universally adopted, would maximise happiness. This helps avoid repugnant conclusions — like punishing an innocent person to please a mob.

11. Kantian Ethics |

Immanuel Kant’s deontological ethics is based on duty, not consequences. The only thing good without qualification is a good will. An action has moral worth only if it is done out of reverence for the moral law, not from inclination. The moral law is discovered by reason through the Categorical Imperative: 'Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.'

The second formulation, the Formula of Humanity, states: 'Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of another, always at the same time as an end and never simply as a means.' This prohibits using people merely as tools. Kantian ethics identifies perfect duties (strict, like not lying) and imperfect duties (praiseworthy but not always compulsory, like developing talents).

Critics point out that Kant’s absolutism leads to counter-intuitive results — e.g., forbidding lying even to save a life. Moreover, his universalisability test can be manipulated by specifying the maxim in a particular way, and the theory struggles to resolve conflicts between duties.

12. Free Will and Responsibility |

The WJEC specification applies the free will debate to issues of moral and legal responsibility. Hard determinism claims that every event has a cause, so human actions are determined and we have no genuine free will — thus, we cannot be held morally responsible. Libertarianism, by contrast, holds that we do have metaphysical free will and are therefore responsible for our actions.

Compatibilism (soft determinism) tries to reconcile determinism with moral responsibility. For compatibilists, free will means acting according to one’s own desires, free from external coercion, even if those desires are themselves determined. This is the position of many contemporary philosophers and underpins most legal systems: we treat someone as responsible if they could have done otherwise in the sense of not being constrained, not in the metaphysical sense.

In applied ethics, consider the case of a violent offender who had a severely abusive childhood. A hard determinist might argue that their actions were causally inevitable and punishment is unjustified except as rehabilitation or deterrence. A libertarian would insist that the offender ultimately chose and deserves blame. A compatibilist would focus on whether, at the time of the act, the person was acting on their own uncoerced desires.
