1. Understanding the Exam Structure and Assessment Objectives |
WJEC GCSE Sociology is assessed entirely by examination, with no coursework component. Candidates sit two papers, and each paper is worth 50% of the final qualification. Unit 1, 'Understanding Social Processes', focuses on the family, education and sociological research methods. Unit 2, 'Understanding Social Structures', covers social stratification, crime and deviance, and power and authority. Each paper lasts 1 hour 45 minutes and contains a mixture of short-answer questions, extended-writing tasks and essay-style questions that demand both explanation and evaluation.
WJEC GCSE
| Unit 2: Understanding Social Structures – 理解社会结构 | 1 hour 45 minutes / 50% | Social Stratification, Crime and Deviance, Power and Authority |
WJEC assesses students against three main assessment objectives. AO1 requires demonstration of knowledge and understanding of sociological theories, concepts and evidence. AO2 requires the application of that knowledge to particular social contexts, institutions and examples. AO3 requires analysis and evaluation, which means weighing up competing explanations, judging the strengths and weaknesses of research evidence, and reaching a supported conclusion.
- AO1 – Knowledge and understanding of sociological theories, concepts and evidence /
- AO2 – Application of sociological knowledge to real social contexts and examples /
- AO3 – Analysis and evaluation of theories, methods and evidence /
Unit 1 (50%) + Unit 2 (50%) = 100% of the GCSE grade
A practical point for parents: the highest marks in both papers are usually attached to the final, longer questions, where AO3 carries the most weight. A child who writes a lot but never evaluates will plateau at a mid grade, so it is worth asking your teenager regularly: 'What is the other side of this argument?'
2. Unit 1: The Family |
The family is usually the first topic taught because students can relate it to their own experience. Candidates need to know the different family types found in contemporary Britain: the nuclear family, the extended family, the lone-parent family, the reconstituted (step) family, same-sex families and single-person households. They also need to understand how family structures have changed over time.
Functionalist writers argue that the family performs essential functions for society. Murdock identified four: sexual, reproductive, economic and socialisation. Parsons developed the idea of the 'functional fit', claiming that the nuclear family suits an industrial society because it is geographically and socially mobile. Marxists and feminists disagree sharply, arguing that the family maintains capitalism and patriarchal inequality.
- Rapoport and Rapoport – family diversity: organisational, cultural, social-class, life-course and cohort diversity /
- Young and Willmott – the symmetrical family and the march of progress /
- Oakley – the myth of the symmetrical family; women still carry the double burden /
- Chester – the neo-conventional family; diversity has been exaggerated /
- Murray (New Right) – the underclass and welfare dependency /
Useful revision activity: ask your child to name three social changes that have affected family life in the last fifty years – for example, divorce reform, changing attitudes to cohabitation, contraception and women's employment – and then explain, in one sentence each, how sociologists would interpret those changes.
3. Unit 1: Education |
Education questions almost always ask about function and inequality. Students must be able to explain what schools do for society, and then explain why some groups achieve more than others. Functionalism emphasises socialisation, social solidarity and the allocation of roles; Marxism emphasises the reproduction of class inequality; feminism emphasises gendered patterns of subject choice and achievement.
Key functionalist ideas to know include Durkheim's argument that education creates social solidarity and transmits specialist skills, Parsons' view that schools act as a bridge between the family and wider society and operate on universalistic standards, and Davis and Moore's claim that education sorts people into the most appropriate occupational roles.
- Bowles and Gintis – the correspondence principle and the hidden curriculum /
- Willis (Learning to Labour) – working-class boys resisting school and ending up in manual work / 威利斯《学习劳动》——工人阶级男孩反抗学校,最终进入体力工作
- Bourdieu – cultural capital and educational advantage /
- Bernstein – restricted and elaborated speech codes /
- Hargreaves – subcultures, labelling and the self-fulfilling prophecy /
Parents can support this topic by discussing everyday examples: why certain subjects are seen as 'boys' subjects', why private tuition exists, or why Ofsted inspections matter. Sociology rewards students who can connect abstract theory to ordinary life.
4. Unit 1: Sociological Research Methods |
Research methods are worth a substantial share of Unit 1 and are often combined with a topic question, for example asking how a sociologist might investigate truancy or domestic labour. Students must know the main methods, their strengths and weaknesses, and the practical, ethical and theoretical factors that influence method choice.
Four vocabulary terms come up again and again: reliability (could the study be repeated with the same result?), validity (does it measure what it claims to measure?), representativeness (does the sample reflect the wider population?) and ethics (consent, confidentiality, harm and deception). Ask your child to define each in one sentence out loud – if they cannot, that is the revision priority.
5. Unit 2: Social Stratification |
Social stratification examines how societies rank their members into hierarchies of wealth, income, status and power. Students study class, gender, ethnicity and age as dimensions of inequality, and consider whether Britain has become a more open or a more closed society. Social mobility – the movement of individuals or groups up or down the stratification system – is a central concept.
Students should distinguish absolute poverty from relative poverty, and be able to explain the difference between Marx's view of class as a relationship to the means of production and Weber's multidimensional view of class, status and party. They should also understand concepts such as life chances, social exclusion, the poverty trap and the cycle of deprivation.
Life chances ≈ f(class + gender + ethnicity + age + locality)
A common exam task is to evaluate the view that Britain is now a meritocracy. Strong answers will set functionalist claims about reward for effort against evidence about wealth concentration, unpaid domestic labour, the gender pay gap and unequal access to elite education.
6. Unit 2: Crime and Deviance |
This topic asks why people break rules and how society responds. Students must know that much crime is never recorded: the dark figure of crime explains why official statistics are only a partial picture, and why sociologists prefer victim surveys and self-report studies as additional sources of evidence.
- Durkheim – crime is normal, functional and marks the boundaries of morality /
- Merton – strain between cultural goals and legitimate means /
- Becker and labelling theory – deviance is a social construction; who gets labelled matters /
- Cohen and Cloward and Ohlin – status frustration and illegitimate opportunity structures /
- Marxist and feminist perspectives – white-collar crime, the crimes of the powerful and gender patterns in offending /
Parents can help by encouraging balanced argument. When a news story about crime appears, ask: 'How would a labelling theorist explain this differently from a functionalist?' That single question rehearses the analysis and evaluation skills the examiner wants.
7. Unit 2: Power and Authority |
The final Unit 2 topic examines who holds power, how authority is legitimised and how citizens participate politically. Weber's three types of authority – traditional, legal-rational and charismatic – are essential knowledge, as is the distinction between power (the ability to influence) and authority (accepted, legitimate power).
Students should be able to discuss political participation and its decline: falling turnout at general elections, the rise of pressure groups and social media campaigning, and debates about lowering the voting age. They should also be able to compare elite theories of power, such as Mills' power elite, with pluralist models that see power dispersed among competing groups.
A useful family activity is to watch a short televised political debate together and ask your child to identify which type of authority each speaker is claiming, and whether the discussion reflects pluralist or elite power.
8. Core Concepts and Theoretical Perspectives |
Whichever topic appears on the paper, the same skeleton of concepts and perspectives is being tested. Students who can deploy these fluently tend to gain marks quickly, because they can frame any answer within a recognised sociological debate.
- Socialisation – primary and secondary; how norms and values are learned /
- Social control – formal and informal mechanisms of conformity /
- Social construction – ideas such as childhood, gender and deviance are made, not given / 社会建构——童年、性别、偏差等观念是被建构的,而非天然的
- Structure and agency – are our lives shaped by society or by our own choices? /
- Consensus and conflict – functionalist versus Marxist and feminist traditions /
Structure ⇌ Agency | Consensus ⇌ Conflict
Ask your child to explain each perspective in sixty seconds without notes. Fluency here is worth more than memorising long lists of studies.
