1. Denotation and Connotation |
Denotation is the literal, face-value meaning of a sign: what you actually see or hear. For instance, a photograph of an apple simply denotes a piece of fruit. Connotation, by contrast, refers to the secondary, cultural or emotional associations a sign carries. That same apple might connote health, temptation, education or technology depending on its context and styling.
When you analyse any media text, always move from denotation to connotation. A red dress in a poster denotes clothing, but its connotations could involve danger, passion, power or love. Producers deliberately select every colour, object and gesture to layer meanings that audiences are trained to decode.
- Denotation: A skull. Connotation: Death, poison, danger. |
- Denotation: A crown. Connotation: Royalty, power, authority. |
- Denotation: A white dove. Connotation: Peace, innocence. |
2. Camera Shots and Angles |
Camera work is the grammar of visual storytelling. An extreme long shot (ELS) shows a vast landscape or cityscape, often establishing the setting. A long shot (LS) shows the full human figure and some surroundings. A medium shot (MS) frames a person from the waist up and is frequently used for dialogue. A close-up (CU) focuses on a face or object, revealing emotion or detail. An extreme close-up (ECU) zooms in on a specific feature, such as an eye, to intensify tension or symbolism.
Camera angles also shape audience interpretation. A high-angle shot looks down on a subject, making them appear vulnerable or weak. A low-angle shot looks up, granting the subject power and dominance. An eye-level shot creates neutrality and empathy. A Dutch angle (canted angle) tilts the frame to suggest disorientation, chaos or psychological unease.
- ELS: Opening of a disaster movie showing a deserted city. |
- Low angle: Villain introduced from below to seem menacing. |
- Dutch angle: Character has just received shocking news; the world is 'off'.
3. Mise-en-scène |
Mise-en-scène is a French term meaning 'placed in the scene'. It encompasses everything visible within the frame: setting, props, costume, hair and make-up, lighting, colour, figure expression and positioning. Every element is a deliberate choice that communicates meaning to the audience.
For example, a gloomy, rain-soaked alley with a flickering neon sign creates a mood of danger and noir mystery. A bright, orderly classroom with charts and plants connotes safety and learning. Costume can instantly signal a character's job, status or personality: a lab coat suggests a scientist, while torn jeans might suggest rebellion or poverty.
- Setting: An abandoned warehouse connotes isolation and decay. |
- Props: A character holding a broken pocket watch implies a desire to stop time.
- Body language: Crossed arms defend; open palms welcome. |
4. Editing Techniques |
Editing is the process of selecting and combining shots to create a sequence. The most basic edit is a cut, where one shot instantly replaces another. A jump cut deliberately breaks continuity, often jarring the viewer. A fade gradually turns the image to or from a black (or white) screen, suggesting a passage of time. A dissolve slowly blends one shot into another, often linking two scenes thematically. A wipe pushes one image off the screen with another, used more in action or stylised sequences.
Other key techniques include continuity editing, which follows rules such as the 180-degree rule and shot/reverse shot to make space and time feel seamless. Montage compresses time by showing a series of short shots, often set to music, to convey progression or a passage of time. Parallel editing (cross-cutting) alternates between two or more scenes happening simultaneously, building suspense.
- Jump cut: A vlog where a speaker suddenly 'jumps' to a different position. |
- Dissolve: A character's face slowly turns into the same character as a child. |
- Montage: Training sequence in a sports film. |
5. Sound Design |
Sound in media is divided into diegetic and non-diegetic categories. Diegetic sound exists within the story world: characters speaking, doors slamming, radio music. Non-diegetic sound is added for the audience only: the film score, voice-over narration, added sound effects like a dramatic 'sting'. A sound bridge is a transition where audio from the next scene begins before the current image ends, creating a smooth narrative link.
Ambient sound (atmosphere) provides the background noise of a location, such as birdsong or traffic, making a setting feel authentic. A soundtrack can be compiled from existing songs or originally composed; it heavily shapes the mood. Voice-over is often used to reveal a character's inner thoughts or provide exposition. Silence itself can be a powerful sound choice, amplifying tension.
- Diegetic: A character switches on a car radio; we hear the song as they do.
- Non-diegetic: Ominous music that only the audience hears when a shark approaches. |
- Sound bridge: While a family waves goodbye, we begin to hear the bustle of the airport in the next scene. |
6. Narrative Theories |
Narrative theory helps us understand how stories are structured and why they engage audiences. Todorov's narrative pattern proposes that stories begin with an equilibrium (normality), are disrupted by a problem, then progress to a recognition and an attempt to repair the disruption, ending with a new equilibrium. Propp identified recurring character types in folk tales, including the hero, villain, donor, helper, princess and false hero. Many action adverts and films still draw on these archetypes.
Barthes focused on codes, especially the enigma code (hermeneutic code), which are puzzles or mysteries set up by the text to keep audiences guessing and wanting to stay until the end. Levi-Strauss argued that narratives are driven by binary oppositions: pairs of opposing forces such as good vs evil, nature vs technology, order vs chaos. Spotting these opposition helps you analyse deeper ideological messages.
- Todorov: A makeover show: 'before' (problem) → makeover process → 'after' (new equilibrium). |
- Propp: A car advert featuring a hero driving through obstacles to reach a destination, helped by a 'guide'. |
- Binary opposition: A sci-fi poster pits unspoiled nature against polluted cityscapes. |
7. Representation and Identity |
Representation refers to how media texts portray social groups, events and issues. It is never a simple mirror of reality; it is a constructed version that involves selection, emphasis and mediation. Stereotypes are oversimplified, widely repeated representations that reduce a group to a few exaggerated traits. While stereotypes can provide quick narrative shorthand, they can also reinforce prejudice. Countertypes challenge and reverse traditional stereotypes.
When analysing representation, always consider: Who made the text? Whose perspective is centred? Which groups are marginalised? Pay attention to representations of gender, ethnicity, age, social class, sexuality and disability. For example, a luxury watch advert may represent masculinity as powerful and wealthy, while a toilet cleaner advert might represent femininity as domestic and nurturing.
- Stereotype: Teenagers in hoodies represented as threatening. |
- Countertype: A male stay-at-home parent happily caring for children in an insurance advert. |
- Selective representation: A travel brochure only showing sunny beaches and smiling locals, omitting poverty. |
8. Audience Theories |
Understanding audiences is central to media analysis. The hypodermic needle model (also called the effects model) suggests that media messages are injected directly into a passive audience, who absorb them uncritically. This model is often used in debates about media violence. However, many theorists argue that audiences are active. The uses and gratifications theory proposes that people seek out media to satisfy specific needs: information, personal identity, social interaction and entertainment.
Stuart Hall's reception theory states that a media text is encoded with a preferred meaning by its producer, but audiences can decode it in different ways. A dominant (or preferred) reading accepts the intended message. A negotiated reading partly accepts but modifies the message based on personal experience. An oppositional reading completely rejects the intended meaning, often recognising political or cultural bias.
- Hypodermic needle: Moral panic that a violent video game will directly cause real violence. |
- Uses and gratifications: A teenager watches a YouTube tutorial to learn a skill (information) and feel part of a community (social interaction).
- Oppositional reading: An audience member viewing a luxury lifestyle blog as distasteful and unethical. |
9. Media Industries and Institutions |
Media institutions range from small independent producers to vast conglomerates—large corporations owning multiple companies across different media. A conglomerate like Disney benefits from synergy: different parts of the business work together to promote a single product. A film release can be supported by theme park attractions, merchandise, a soundtrack album and television spin-offs, all within the same parent company.
Cross-media ownership refers to a company owning outlets in different media sectors (e.g. a newspaper group also owning radio stations). Vertical integration occurs when a company controls production, distribution and exhibition. A film studio owning its own cinema chain is an example. Horizontal integration is when a company expands at the same level of the supply chain, such as buying rival magazines. Public service broadcasting (PSB), such as the BBC, must inform, educate and entertain without commercial pressure, and is regulated by bodies like Ofcom.
- Synergy: A blockbuster superhero film is released alongside a video game, comics and toys. |
- Vertical integration: A streaming service that both produces original series and distributes them worldwide. |
- PSB: A news programme required by law to remain impartial. |
10. Genre and Conventions |
Genre classifies media texts into categories based on shared conventions. Sub-genre is a more specific division within a broader genre: 'slasher' is a sub-genre of horror. Hybrid genres blend conventions from two or more genres, producing texts like romantic comedy (rom-com) or science-fiction horror. Recognising genre allows audiences to form expectations and helps producers target markets.
Iconography is the visual and auditory codes instantly associated with a genre: a Stetson hat and spurs iconographically signal a western; neon lights and rain suggest noir. Conventions are further divided into formal conventions (camera work, editing, sound) and thematic conventions (common themes like revenge, coming-of-age, survival). Producers play with conventions to keep genres fresh, but too much deviation can alienate the core audience.
- Iconography of horror: Flickering lights, isolated cabin, blood, a creepy doll. |
- Hybrid genre: A musical set in a zombie apocalypse. |
- Sub-genre convention: In a rom-com, the 'meet-cute' scene where the two leads encounter each other in an awkward or funny way.
