1. Structure of the Earth |
The Earth is made up of four main layers: the inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust. The inner core is solid iron and nickel with temperatures up to 5500 °C, while the outer core is liquid iron and nickel. The mantle is semi-solid rock that flows very slowly, and the crust is the thin, solid outermost layer where we live.
The crust is divided into oceanic crust (thinner, denser, mainly basalt) and continental crust (thicker, less dense, mainly granite). The lithosphere includes the crust and the uppermost rigid part of the mantle, broken into tectonic plates that float on the asthenosphere—a hotter, more fluid layer below.
2. Plate Tectonics |
Tectonic plates move due to convection currents in the mantle. Heat from the core causes magma to rise, spread sideways, cool, and sink, creating a slow circulation that drags the plates. Plates move at rates of a few centimetres per year.
There are three main types of plate boundaries: constructive (divergent), destructive (convergent), and conservative (transform). At constructive boundaries, plates move apart and magma rises to form new crust, e.g. the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. At destructive boundaries, an oceanic plate subducts beneath a continental plate, causing volcanoes and deep ocean trenches. At conservative boundaries, plates slide past each other, causing earthquakes, e.g. the San Andreas Fault.
3. The Rock Cycle |
Rocks are continuously recycled through the rock cycle, which involves three main rock types: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Igneous rocks form when magma or lava cools and solidifies. Examples include granite (intrusive, large crystals) and basalt (extrusive, small crystals).
Sedimentary rocks are formed from layers of sediment compressed and cemented together over millions of years. They often contain fossils. Examples are limestone, sandstone, and shale. Metamorphic rocks arise when existing rocks are changed by heat and pressure, without melting. Marble forms from limestone, and slate from shale. The cycle connects all processes: weathering and erosion break rocks into sediments; burial and compression form sedimentary rocks; heat and pressure cause metamorphism; melting generates magma that cools into igneous rocks.
4. The Solar System |
Our Solar System consists of the Sun, eight planets, their moons, dwarf planets, asteroids, and comets. The Sun is a medium-sized star at the centre, containing 99.86% of the system's mass. It produces energy through nuclear fusion, converting hydrogen into helium in its core.
The four inner, terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars) are rocky and small. The four outer, gas giant planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) are much larger and composed mainly of hydrogen and helium. Between Mars and Jupiter lies the asteroid belt—a region of rocky debris. Dwarf planets like Pluto reside in the Kuiper Belt beyond Neptune.
5. Orbits and Gravity |
path. The closer a planet is to the Sun, the stronger the gravitational force and the faster its orbital speed. This relationship is described by Newton's law of universal gravitation: F = G × M₁ × M₂ ÷ r².
Orbits are elliptical, meaning the distance between the Sun and a planet varies slightly. Kepler's laws explain that a planet sweeps out equal areas in equal times, so it moves faster when closer to the Sun. Artificial satellites also orbit Earth due to gravity, and their speeds are carefully chosen to balance gravitational pull and inertia.
6. The Seasons and Earth’s Tilt |
The Earth's axis is tilted at an angle of approximately 23.5° relative to its orbital plane. This tilt, combined with the Earth's revolution around the Sun, causes the seasons. When the Northern Hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun, it receives more direct sunlight and experiences summer, while the Southern Hemisphere experiences winter.
The intensity of sunlight varies because the same amount of energy is spread over a larger area when the Sun is lower in the sky, and daylight hours are shorter. The solstices (around 21 June and 21 December) mark the longest and shortest days, and the equinoxes (around 21 March and 23 September) have approximately equal day and night lengths.
7. The Moon and Tides |
The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite, with a diameter about one-quarter that of Earth. It orbits Earth approximately every 27.3 days (sidereal month), but the phases repeat every 29.5 days (synodic month) due to Earth's simultaneous orbit around the Sun.
Tides are caused mainly by the gravitational pull of the Moon and, to a lesser extent, the Sun. The Moon's gravity pulls the ocean water towards it, creating a bulge on the side facing the Moon. A second bulge occurs on the opposite side due to the Earth being pulled away from the water. Spring tides (higher high tides, lower low tides) occur when the Sun and Moon align, while neap tides (less extreme) occur when they are at right angles.
8. The Life Cycle of Stars |
Stars are born in nebulae—vast clouds of dust and gas, mainly hydrogen. Gravity pulls the material together, forming a protostar. When the core temperature reaches about 15 million °C, nuclear fusion ignites, converting hydrogen into helium, and a main sequence star is born. A star spends most of its life in this stable phase.
The fate of a star depends on its mass. Low-mass stars like our Sun eventually expand into red giants, shed their outer layers as a planetary nebula, and leave behind a hot, dense white dwarf. High-mass stars undergo further fusion reactions, producing heavier elements up to iron, then explode as supernovae. The remnant core may become a neutron star or, if massive enough, a black hole.
9. The Universe and the Big Bang |
The Universe is everything that exists—all matter, energy, space, and time. The prevailing theory for its origin is the Big Bang, which states that the Universe began about 13.8 billion years ago from an extremely hot, dense point and has been expanding ever since.
Evidence for the Big Bang includes the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR), which is the cooled remnant of the initial flash, and the observed expansion of the Universe via red-shift. The Universe is not expanding into anything; rather, space itself is stretching.
10. Red-shift and Expansion |
When we observe light from distant galaxies, the spectral lines are shifted towards the red end of the spectrum. This red-shift indicates that these galaxies are moving away from us. The further away a galaxy is, the faster it appears to recede—a relationship known as Hubble's Law.
Red-shift is caused by the stretching of light waves as space expands, increasing their wavelength. This provides strong evidence for the Big Bang theory and the ongoing expansion of the Universe. Observations also suggest the expansion is accelerating, driven by a mysterious dark energy.
11. Comets, Asteroids, and Meteors |
Comets are icy bodies that originate from the outer Solar System, often the Kuiper Belt or Oort Cloud. When they approach the Sun, the ice vaporises, creating a glowing coma and a tail that always points away from the Sun due to solar wind. Asteroids are rocky objects, mostly found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
A meteor is the streak of light produced when a small piece of space debris (a meteoroid) enters the Earth's atmosphere and burns up due to friction. If it survives and lands on Earth, it is called a meteorite. Meteor showers occur when Earth passes through debris left by comets.
12. Observing the Universe |
Astronomers use telescopes to collect and analyse light from celestial objects. Optical telescopes observe visible light, while radio telescopes detect radio waves. Space telescopes, such as the Hubble Space Telescope, avoid atmospheric distortion and can observe ultraviolet, X-ray, and infrared wavelengths that are blocked by Earth's atmosphere.
Other techniques include spectroscopy, which splits light into its component colours to determine composition, temperature, and movement. Parallax is used to measure distances to nearby stars by observing their apparent shift against distant background stars as Earth orbits the Sun.
