2. Background: The Cold War Context |
After the Second World War, the world was divided into two opposing blocs: the capitalist United States with its allies in NATO, and the communist Soviet Union with its satellite states in Eastern Europe. Both superpowers possessed nuclear weapons, leading to a tense arms race and the policy of mutually assured destruction (MAD). The Cold War was fought through proxy wars, propaganda, and brinkmanship.
Cuba, located just 90 miles from the US coast, had been under the influence of the US since the Spanish-American War. In 1959, Fidel Castro led a revolution that overthrew the US-backed dictator Batista. Castro initially sought American support, but after being rebuffed, he turned to the Soviet Union, nationalizing US-owned businesses. This alarmed Washington and set the stage for confrontation.
3. Causes of the Cuban Missile Crisis (Part 1) |
In April 1961, the Kennedy administration authorized a CIA-led invasion of Cuba by exiled Cubans at the Bay of Pigs. The invasion was a complete fiasco, as Castro's forces quickly defeated the invaders. This failure strengthened Castro's position and embarrassed the US. It also convinced Castro that the US would not tolerate a socialist Cuba and would try to remove him again.
After the Bay of Pigs, Castro publicly declared Cuba a socialist state and sought military protection from the Soviet Union. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev saw an opportunity to extend communist influence in the Western Hemisphere and counterbalance US missile deployments in Turkey and Italy. Secretly, the USSR began shipping nuclear missiles to Cuba in the summer of 1962, along with thousands of Soviet technicians and troops.
