1. Understanding the CIE Psychology Essay Requirements | 理解CIE心理学论文要求
Before you start writing, it is essential to know exactly what the examiners are looking for. In CIE GCSE Psychology, extended essays are usually worth 12 marks and are split across three assessment objectives. AO1 tests your knowledge and understanding of psychological concepts and studies. AO2 requires you to apply that knowledge to novel scenarios. AO3 assesses your ability to analyse, evaluate and make judgements. A high-scoring essay balances straightforward description with evaluation, rather than simply listing facts.
| Assessment Objective | Typical Marks | What You Need to Do |
| AO1 | 3-4 | Describe theories, models or studies accurately |
| AO2 | 3-4 | Apply knowledge to a given context or example |
| AO3 | 4-6 | Evaluate strengths, weaknesses and research evidence |
Mark schemes consistently reward well-structured arguments that link back to the question. You should never write a general description of a topic without considering the command word. 'Discuss' essays, for example, must include both description and evaluation, while an 'Outline' question might only need a clear description. Understanding this distinction will prevent you from losing marks unnecessarily.
2. The PEEL Paragraph Structure | PEEL
One of the most effective frameworks for writing psychology essays is PEEL: Point, Evidence, Explanation and Link. This structure keeps every paragraph focused and ensures you include the necessary detail. Begin by making a clear point that directly responds to the question. Then, support it with evidence, such as a key study or theory. Next, explain how the evidence supports your point, showing your understanding. Finally, link the paragraph back to the question or forward to the next argument.
- Point: State the idea (e.g. 'The multi-store model suggests memory is made up of three separate stores.')
- Evidence: Cite research (e.g. 'This is supported by Glanzer and Cunitz (1966), who found primacy and recency effects in free recall.')
- Explanation: Clarify the relevance (e.g. 'The primacy effect supports the existence of the long-term store because early words were rehearsed.')
- Link: Connect to the question or next point (e.g. 'However, the model has been criticised for being oversimplified...')
A sample PEEL paragraph on memory looks like this: 'One strength of the multi-store model is that it demonstrates separate memory stores (Point). Glanzer and Cunitz (1966) asked participants to recall a list of words and found they remembered more words from the start and end of the list (Evidence). This primacy and recency effect supports the idea of a short-term and a long-term store because words at the beginning were rehearsed and transferred to LTM, while words at the end remained in STM (Explanation). Therefore, the model provides a simple but testable explanation of memory processes (Link).'
3. How to Plan an Essay in 5 Minutes |
Many students lose marks because they start writing immediately without a plan. Spending just five minutes on a quick outline can make your essay much more coherent. First, read the question twice and underline the command word and key terms. Then, jot down the main ideas you want to cover in bullet points. Decide on a clear structure: introduction, 2–3 body paragraphs and a conclusion. For a 12-mark essay, aim for at least one descriptive paragraph and two evaluative paragraphs.
A sample plan for a 'Discuss the multi-store model of memory' question might look like this: Introduction – define model and outline its three stores. Body 1 – describe sensory register, STM and LTM (AO1). Body 2 – supporting evidence from Glanzer and Cunitz (AO3). Body 3 – limitations, such as the model's oversimplification and case study of KF (AO3). Conclusion – summarise and give a final judgement on the model's usefulness. This skeleton ensures you know exactly what to write before you begin.
4. Crafting a Strong Introduction |
Your introduction sets the tone and shows the examiner that you understand the question. A strong introduction should accomplish three things: define any key terms, briefly outline the structure of your essay, and present a clear argument or thesis. Avoid starting with vague phrases like 'This essay will talk about...' Instead, be direct and precise. Keep it to around two to three sentences to save time for the main body.
Here is a strong introduction for a question on conformity: 'Conformity refers to a change in behaviour or belief due to real or imagined group pressure. This essay will discuss two major explanations of conformity – informational social influence and normative social influence – and evaluate them using research by Asch (1956) and others. While both explanations have merit, evidence suggests that normative influence may have a stronger impact in unambiguous situations.'
5. Developing Arguments with Evidence |
In CIE Psychology essays, every claim you make needs to be backed up by evidence. This usually means citing a relevant study, theory or case study. When introducing a study, state the researchers' names and year of publication, a brief description of the procedure, and the key findings. Then, explicitly explain how the findings support or challenge the theory you are discussing. This transforms a simple description into a well-developed argument.
For example, when discussing the working memory model, you could write: 'Baddeley and Hitch (1974) demonstrated the existence of multiple components within short-term memory by asking participants to perform two tasks simultaneously, such as tracking a moving light while repeating a string of numbers. They found that performance on these dual tasks was far better than if it relied on a single short-term store, supporting the idea of separate phonological loop and visuo-spatial sketchpad systems.'
Always link the evidence to the question. After stating the findings, add a sentence such as 'This therefore strengthens the multi-store model because it provides empirical support for separate memory stores.'
6. Evaluating Studies Critically |
Evaluation is the most important skill for AO3 marks. You need to go beyond simply describing a study and weigh up its strengths and weaknesses. Effective evaluation points consider methodology, ethical issues, cultural bias, sample size, ecological validity and reliability. Use the acronym GRAVE (Generalisability, Reliability, Applicability, Validity, Ethics) to remind yourself of these aspects. Always aim to give a balanced view – if you point out a weakness, try to mention a strength or explain why the weakness matters in the context of the theory.
可以使用助记词GRAVE(普遍性、可靠性、适用性、效度、伦理)来提醒自己这些方面。
| Evaluation Criterion | Question to Ask |
| Generalisability | Can the findings be applied to other groups (e.g. cultures, ages)? |
| Reliability | Would the study produce consistent results if repeated? |
| Applicability | Can the findings be used in real-life settings? |
| Validity | Does the study measure what it claims to measure? (internal/external) |
| Ethics | Were participants protected from harm, deception, etc.? |
For example, when evaluating Asch's conformity study, you could write: 'A weakness of Asch's study is its low ecological validity because judging line lengths in a lab does not reflect real-life social pressure. However, the highly controlled setting increased internal validity, allowing Asch to establish a cause-and-effect relationship between group pressure and conformity. Additionally, the sample consisted only of male American students, making it difficult to generalise the findings to women or other cultures.'
7. Using Command Words Effectively |
Command words tell you exactly what the examiner expects. The most common ones in CIE GCSE Psychology are 'Describe', 'Outline', 'Explain', 'Discuss' and 'Evaluate'. 'Describe' requires a detailed account of a theory or study without explanation of why. 'Outline' is similar but often shorter, giving only the main features. 'Explain' demands reasons or mechanisms. 'Discuss' and 'Evaluate' both require description plus a balanced evaluation of strengths and weaknesses. Reading the command word carefully can make the difference between a low and high score.
- Describe: What is it? Provide a detailed picture.
- Outline: Give a brief summary of main points.
- Explain: Show how and why something happens.
- Discuss: Describe and present both sides of an argument.
- Evaluate: Make a judgement based on evidence, strengths and weaknesses.
If you see 'Discuss', your essay body must contain both AO1 descriptive paragraphs and AO3 evaluation paragraphs. If you only describe, you will lose half the marks. Practice identifying command words in past papers and writing a brief note on how you would structure your answer.
8. The Conclusion: Summarising without Repeating |
A conclusion is your final chance to show the examiner your overall judgement. It should not introduce new information or simply repeat what you already said. Instead, synthesise the key arguments and offer a concise, evaluative statement. For a 'Discuss' essay, you might conclude that a theory is largely supported but has notable limitations that future research should address. Keep it to two or three sentences.
Example conclusion for the multi-store model: 'In conclusion, the multi-store model provides a foundational explanation of memory structure and is supported by lab studies. However, its oversimplification of STM and LTM as single units and reliance on artificial tasks limits its explanatory power. Overall, it is a useful starting point but has been largely superseded by the working memory model.'
9. Model Essay 1: Memory (Multi-Store Model) |
Question: Describe and evaluate the multi-store model of memory. (12 marks)
sensory register, short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM). Information enters through the sensory register, which holds sensory impressions very briefly. If attention is paid, it passes to STM, which has a limited capacity of about 7±2 items and a duration of around 18-30 seconds. Through maintenance rehearsal, information can be transferred to LTM, where capacity and duration are potentially unlimited.
记忆的多存储模型由Atkinson和Shiffrin(1968)提出。
One strength of the MSM is its strong research support. Glanzer and Cunitz (1966) demonstrated the primacy and recency effect in a free recall task. Participants remembered words from the beginning and end of a list better than those in the middle. The primacy effect supports the presence of LTM because earlier words were rehearsed and transferred, while the recency effect suggests a separate STM store for recent items. This controlled lab study provides reliable evidence for the distinction between STM and LTM.
However, the model has several limitations. It oversimplifies STM and LTM as single, passive stores. Case studies of brain-damaged patients, such as KF, challenge this view. KF had severely impaired STM for verbal material but intact STM for visual information, suggesting STM is not one store but multiple components, as the working memory model argues. Moreover, the MSM emphasises maintenance rehearsal as the main route to LTM, but in real life we often remember things without deliberate rehearsal, such as a shocking event. This lack of flexibility reduces the model's validity.
In conclusion, the multi-store model has been highly influential and has inspired much research. It clearly distinguishes between structural components of memory. However, its simplistic approach does not account for the complexity of memory processing. While still useful as an introductory model, it has been largely replaced by more detailed models like the working memory model.
10. Model Essay 2: Social Influence (Conformity) |
Question: Discuss explanations of conformity. Refer to research evidence in your answer. (12 marks)
Conformity is a type of social influence involving a change in behaviour or opinion to fit in with a group. Two main explanations have been proposed: informational social influence (ISI) and normative social influence (NSI). ISI occurs when an individual is uncertain and looks to the group for guidance, believing the group is more likely to be correct. This often leads to internalisation, where the person privately accepts the group's view. NSI, on the other hand, is based on the desire to be liked and accepted, leading to compliance, where a person publicly agrees but may privately disagree.
Solomon Asch's (1956) classic line-judgement study demonstrates NSI. Asch asked participants to identify which of three comparison lines matched a standard line, in the presence of confederates who deliberately gave the wrong answer. Around 75% of participants conformed at least once, even though the correct answer was obvious. Post-experiment interviews revealed that many participants conformed to avoid rejection, supporting the role of NSI. This illustrates the power of a unanimous majority in creating public compliance.
ISI is clearly demonstrated in Sheriff's (1935) autokinetic effect experiment. Participants estimated the apparent movement of a stationary light dot in a dark room. When tested individually, estimates varied widely. However, in a group, participants' estimates converged towards a common norm. Because the situation was ambiguous, participants relied on each other's judgements, showing ISI and resulting in internalisation. This study highlights how informational influence occurs when there is no objective reference point.
Both explanations have limitations. Asch's study was conducted in a specific historical and cultural context – 1950s America, a conformist society – which may reduce
