1. CIE IGCSE Accounting Syllabus at a Glance | CIE IGCSE
The CIE IGCSE Accounting syllabus (0452) is assessed through two compulsory papers: Paper 1 (multiple choice) and Paper 2 (structured written questions). Topics range from the fundamentals of double-entry bookkeeping to the preparation of financial statements for sole traders, partnerships, limited companies, clubs and manufacturing businesses. Students are also expected to understand accounting ratios and the analysis of business performance. Both papers are calculator-friendly, but they reward precision rather than speed: a single misposted figure can destroy an otherwise perfect set of accounts.
CIE IGCSE
Multiple choice, short and fast, tests breadth of knowledge.
- Paper 2 | 试卷二: Structured questions, tests depth, presentation and workings.
- Core skills | 核心技能: Double entry, ledger accounts, trial balance, final accounts, adjustments, ratios.
A useful way to think about the syllabus is as a chain of dependencies. Double entry feeds the ledger, the ledger feeds the trial balance, the trial balance feeds the financial statements, and the financial statements feed the ratio analysis. Break one link and everything downstream becomes guesswork. That is precisely why a summer pre-study course concentrates on the first three links rather than racing ahead to the exotic topics.
2. What the Bridging Course Covers |
During this bridging course we focus on the core building blocks: the accounting equation, double-entry rules, recording transactions, the trial balance and basic financial statements. These topics form the backbone of the entire subject and will appear in nearly every exam question. By mastering them early, you reduce pressure during the academic year and can concentrate on developing analysis skills instead of scrambling to remember which side of the account cash goes on.
The four-week plan below is a realistic summer target. Each week produces a tangible output, so progress is measurable rather than vague.
| 2 | Double entry, books of prime entry | 双录记账、原始分录账簿 | Full set of day books and ledger postings | 完整的一套日记账与分类账过账 |
| 3 | Trial balance and correction of errors | 试算平衡表与错账更正 | Balanced trial balance from own data | 用自己编的数据做出平衡的试算表 |
3. The Accounting Equation |
Everything in accounting starts from one identity. This relationship shows that everything a business owns (assets) is funded either by the owner's investment and retained profits (capital) or by outside money owed (liabilities). The equation must stay true after every single transaction, which is why it is the best self-check a beginner can use.
Assets = Capital + Liabilities
A slightly expanded version separates profit and drawings, which is how the capital section of the statement of financial position is actually built:
Closing Capital = Opening Capital + Profit − Drawings
Work through a simple example. A trader starts with $10,000 cash: assets 10,000 = capital 10,000 + liabilities 0. She buys equipment for $4,000 cash, so cash falls to $6,000 and equipment rises to $4,000; total assets remain 10,000. She then buys inventory on credit for $ 2,000. Nothing has been lost or invented; only the shape of the balance sheet has changed.
- Assets | 资产: Resources owned or controlled, e.g. cash, inventory, equipment, trade receivables.
- Liabilities | 负债: Present obligations, e.g. trade payables, bank loan, accruals.
The owner's stake, increased by profit and capital introduced, reduced by drawings and losses.
4. Double-Entry Bookkeeping Rules |
Double entry means that every transaction is recorded twice, once as a debit and once as a credit, with equal value. The account that receives value is debited; the account that gives value is credited. Learn this as a rule of logic rather than a list to memorise, and you will never need to guess again.
The classic memory aid for beginners is DEAD CLIC, which summarises what increases on each side:
Practice with everyday transactions: buy inventory for cash (debit inventory, credit cash), sell goods on credit (debit trade receivable, credit sales), pay a supplier (debit trade payable, credit cash), pay rent (debit rent expense, credit cash). Notice that each entry moves value between two named accounts and that the total debits always equal the total credits.
A common beginner error is to treat cash as always a debit. In reality, cash is debited when it increases and credited when it decreases. The double entry rule never changes; only the direction of the movement changes.
5. Books of Prime Entry |
Before anything reaches the ledger, transactions are first written in a book of prime entry. This keeps the ledger tidy and creates an audit trail. The sales day book lists credit sales, the purchases day book lists credit purchases, the sales returns day book records goods returned by customers and the purchases returns day book records goods returned to suppliers. The cash book records all cash and bank transactions, and the general journal handles everything that does not fit the other books.
One distinction that examiners love is the difference between trade discount and cash discount. Trade discount is a reduction granted for bulk or trade status; it is deducted on the invoice and is never entered in the ledger. Cash discount is granted for prompt payment; it is recorded, because it changes the amount actually received or paid.
Day books are normally totalled and posted to the ledger at month end.
The cash book often has analysis columns for discounts, bank and cash.
Used for opening entries, corrections of errors and non-regular items.
6. Ledger Accounts, Balancing Off and the Trial Balance |
The ledger collects all the postings account by account. At the end of a period each account is balanced off: add both sides, insert the difference on the smaller side as the balance carried down, then bring it down on the opposite side as the balance brought down. Accounts with a debit balance are assets, expenses or drawings; accounts with a credit balance are liabilities, income or capital.
The trial balance is simply a list of all remaining balances, arranged in debit and credit columns. If total debits equal total credits, the bookkeeping is arithmetically consistent. It is not proof of correctness, and students must know exactly which errors slip through.
- Error of omission | 漏记: A transaction left out completely on both sides.
- Error of commission | 记错账户: Right side, wrong account of the same type.
Treated as one class when it belongs to another, e.g. revenue expenditure treated as capital.
Two mistakes of equal value cancelling out.
Same wrong figure used on both sides.
Debit and credit entered the wrong way round for both accounts.
Suspense accounts appear whenever the trial balance does not balance. The difference is placed in a suspense account temporarily, then cleared as errors are found and corrected through journal entries. Mastering this routine turns a frightening question into easy marks.
7. Financial Statements for a Sole Trader |
For a sole trader, the two key statements are the income statement and the statement of financial position. The income statement calculates gross profit first, then deducts expenses to reach profit for the year. The statement of financial position then shows assets, liabilities and closing capital at a single date.
Gross Profit = Revenue − Cost of Sales
Profit for the Year = Gross Profit + Other Income − Expenses
Cost of sales is normally computed as opening inventory + purchases − closing inventory, adjusted for returns and carriage inwards. Carriage inwards is a cost of bringing goods to the business, so it increases cost of sales; carriage outwards is a distribution cost and belongs with expenses.
| Statement of financial position | 财务状况表 | Typical items | 典型项目 |
Working capital, the difference between current assets and current liabilities, deserves a permanent place in your memory. If working capital is negative, the business may struggle to pay short-term debts even while showing a healthy profit, which is why examiners often ask you to comment on liquidity.
8. Year-End Adjustments |
Real accounts are never perfectly tidy on the last day of the year, so adjustments are needed before the statements can be prepared. The most examined adjustments are depreciation, bad debts and provisions for doubtful debts, accruals and prepayments, and inventory valuation.
Straight-line depreciation = (Cost − Residual value) ÷ Useful life
Reducing-balance depreciation = Net book value × Depreciation rate
An accrual is an expense incurred but not yet paid; it is added to the expense in the income statement and shown as a current liability. A prepayment is an expense paid in advance; it is deducted from the expense and shown as a current asset. Both adjustments exist to respect the matching principle, ensuring that expenses belong to the period they helped to earn revenue in.
Written off as an expense, reducing trade receivables.
- Provision for doubtful debts | 坏账准备: An estimate of receivables unlikely to be collected, usually a percentage of the remaining balance.
Charged as an expense; a decrease is treated as income.
Depreciation is not a fund of cash set aside for replacement. It is the systematic allocation of the cost of a non-current asset over its useful life, matching the expense with the revenue it helps generate. Write that sentence once and you will never lose the theory mark again.
9. Control Accounts and Bank Reconciliation |
Control accounts are summary accounts for trade receivables and trade payables. The trade receivables control account totals all credit sales, receipts from customers, returns and discounts, and its closing balance should equal the sum of individual customer balances in the sales ledger.
Contra entries arise when a business both buys from and sells to the same party, allowing the two balances to be offset without any cash moving. Set-offs, interest charged on overdue accounts and dishonoured cheques are all typical exam items inside control account questions.
Bank reconciliation moves from the cash book balance to the bank statement balance, or the other way round. The common adjusting items are:
Deduct from the bank statement balance.
Add to the bank statement balance.
- Standing orders and direct debits | 长期委托付款与直接扣款: Update the cash book.
- Bank charges and interest | 银行手续费与利息: Update the cash book.
Corrected on the bank statement side.
Note carefully that a bank overdraft is a current liability, not a negative asset. This single mistake accounts for thousands of lost marks every examination session.
10. Partnerships, Limited Companies, Clubs and Manufacturing |
Once the sole trader is secure, the syllabus extends the same logic to other forms of organisation. A partnership prepares an appropriation account after the income statement, distributing profit through interest on capital, partners' salaries, interest on drawings and the agreed profit-sharing ratio.
A limited company distinguishes between share capital, retained earnings and debentures. Debenture interest is an expense before profit, whereas dividends are an appropriation of profit. Clubs and societies use a receipts and payments account, an income and expenditure account and a statement of financial position, with subscriptions in arrears and in advance and life membership handled carefully.
