📚 GCSE AQA PE Essay Writing Framework & Sample Essays | GCSE AQA
Many GCSE AQA Physical Education students find the extended answer questions (6 and 9 marks) the most challenging part of the exam. These questions require not only knowledge (AO1) but also the ability to apply it (AO2) and critically evaluate or analyse (AO3). Without a clear writing framework, answers often lack structure, depth, and specific sporting examples, causing students to lose easy marks. This guide provides you with a proven essay framework, annotated sample essays, a mark-scheme breakdown, and revision strategies to help you achieve top marks in your PE exams.
1. Understanding AQA GCSE PE Extended Questions | 理解 AQA GCSE PE 扩展题
In AQA GCSE Physical Education (8582), both Paper 1 (The human body and movement in physical activity and sport) and Paper 2 (Socio-cultural influences and well-being in physical activity and sport) include 6-mark and 9-mark extended questions. Each paper lasts 1 hour 15 minutes, is worth 78 marks, and counts for 30% of the qualification, while the NEA (practical performance and written analysis) makes up the remaining 40%. Every extended question assesses all three Assessment Objectives: AO1 (knowledge), AO2 (application), and AO3 (evaluation/analysis).
每道扩展题都考查全部三个评估目标:AO1(知识)、AO2(应用)和 AO3(评价/分析)。
For a 6-mark question, marks are typically split with 2 for each AO, while a 9-mark question often demands 3 marks for AO1, 3 for AO2, and 3 for AO3. Examiners expect you to demonstrate breadth and depth, not merely list facts. To score top marks in AO3, you must weigh up advantages and disadvantages, consider short-term and long-term effects, or justify a decision with reasoned arguments. Simply stating a conclusion without analysis will limit your score. Therefore, structuring your response from the start is essential.
2. The PEEL Writing Framework | PEEL
PEEL stands for Point, Evidence, Explain, Link. It is the single most useful structure for PE extended answers because it forces each paragraph to contain a claim (usually AO1), a sporting example (AO2), an explanation of the effect or consequence (AO2 into AO3), and a linking sentence that returns to the question or leads to a judgement (AO3). One PEEL paragraph is worth roughly two to three marks, so a 9-mark answer normally needs three or four well-developed PEEL paragraphs rather than six short ones.
PEEL 分别代表 Point(观点)、Evidence(证据/实例)、Explain(解释)、Link(回扣问题)。
- Point: state the idea clearly, using correct terminology.
- Evidence: name the sport, position, event, or performer and the specific data or situation.
- Explain: say what happens, why it happens, and what the consequence is for performance.
- Link: compare, weigh up, or return to the question with a judgement.
3. Decoding the Mark Scheme: AO1, AO2 and AO3 | 拆解评分标准:AO1、AO2 与 AO3
Each Assessment Objective asks a different kind of thinking. AO1 wants definitions, functions, and correct terminology. AO2 wants that knowledge transferred into a realistic sporting context with a named performer, activity, or stage of a training programme. AO3 wants consequences, comparisons, justification, and a considered final judgement. If your answer contains only AO1 content, you can rarely score above half marks, no matter how much you have written.
| Question | Typical marks split | What the examiner needs |
| 6-mark | AO1 = 2, AO2 = 2, AO3 = 2 | Two clear facts, two applied examples, two evaluative comments |
| 9-mark | AO1 = 3, AO2 = 3, AO3 = 3 | Three developed points, all applied, with balance and a judgement |
Typical level descriptors move from Level 1 (limited, brief, undeveloped) to the top level (detailed, well-applied, thorough analysis with a coherent conclusion). Notice the wording: exhaustive knowledge without application sits in the middle of the scale, so quality of application beats quantity of facts every time.
4. Structuring a 6-Mark Answer | 6
For a 6-mark question, spend about one minute planning and five minutes writing. Aim for three short paragraphs: paragraph one delivers the AO1 knowledge, paragraph two applies it to the named activity or performer, and paragraph three evaluates or analyses the effect. Signpost each part so the examiner can find it instantly, for example by using 'This means that...', 'For example...', and 'However...'.
用明确的信号词让考官一眼找到每个部分,例如 'This means that...'(这意味着)、'For example...'(例如)、'However...'(然而)。
A reliable plan is simply to jot down two facts, two applications, and two judgements in the margin. This prevents the most common 6-mark problem: writing six AO1 sentences that all say the same thing in slightly different words. If the question uses the command word 'explain', every sentence should contain a cause-and-effect link, not just a description.
5. Structuring a 9-Mark Answer | 9
A 9-mark answer should be built on three developed PEEL paragraphs plus a short concluding judgement, and should take around ten minutes in total. Start with a one-sentence thesis that shows your stance, then develop three distinct points, each with its own applied example. Balance is important: if you only present arguments on one side, you cap your AO3 marks because you have not evaluated.
The concluding sentence does not need to be long, but it must be decisive and reasoned: 'Overall, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks because...' followed by the single strongest reason. Avoid introducing a brand-new point in the conclusion, as it cannot be credited with development. Instead, weigh the points you have already made and state which matters most, and why.
Overall, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks because...'(总体而言,利大于弊,因为……),后面接最强的一条理由。
6. Using Specific Sporting Examples |
Generic references such as 'a footballer' or 'a runner' earn limited AO2 marks. Examiners reward specificity: the activity, the position, the level of performer, and the measurable detail. 'A netball centre completing a 12-minute Cooper run to monitor cardiovascular endurance' is far stronger than 'an athlete doing some fitness training'. Strong answers also name the component of fitness, the training method, and the fitness test being used.
A netball centre completing a 12-minute Cooper run to monitor cardiovascular endurance'(一名无板篮球中锋通过 12 分钟库珀跑来监测心血管耐力)比 'an athlete doing some fitness training' 强得多。
| Topic | Strong applied example |
| Principles of training | A county-level 800 m runner applies progressive overload by increasing weekly mileage by about 10% |
| Goal setting | A basketball player sets a process goal of making 80% of free throws in training within six weeks |
| Commercialisation | Premier League broadcast deals raising club revenue while moving kick-off times for television |
| Cardiovascular system | A rower's cardiac output rises because heart rate and stroke volume both increase during a 2000 m race |
Build a personal bank of eight to ten examples per paper during revision. If the example is already familiar and accurate, you can deploy it in seconds under exam pressure, which protects your time for evaluation.
7. Command Words and How to Answer Them | 指令词及应对方法
The command word tells you which Assessment Objectives to prioritise. 'Describe' and 'outline' are AO1 tasks; 'explain' and 'analyse' demand cause-and-effect reasoning linked to a context; 'evaluate', 'justify', and 'discuss' require balanced judgement. Misreading the command word is one of the most expensive mistakes in the whole paper, because an excellent description of the wrong skill still earns nothing.
- Describe / Outline: state what it is or what happens, using correct terms.
- Explain: give the reason and the consequence, using 'because' and 'therefore'.
- Analyse: break the topic into parts and examine how each part affects performance.
- Evaluate / Justify: give both sides, then make a supported final judgement.
8. Sample Essay 1: 6-Mark Question |
Question: Explain how a performer could use the principles of training to improve their performance in a games activity. (6 marks)
Sample answer (annotated): One key principle is specificity, which means training must match the demands of the activity and the components of fitness it requires. A netball centre needs cardiovascular and muscular endurance, so continuous training is more appropriate than heavy resistance work. Therefore, sessions of 30 minutes at 60-80% of maximum heart rate three times a week would develop the endurance needed to keep up with play for four quarters. A second principle is progressive overload, which means gradually increasing the demands on the body so that adaptation continues.
Commentary: The opening sentence is pure AO1 and uses the correct term. The netball centre applying continuous training with a defined intensity, duration, and frequency is AO2. The evaluative clause about lasting four quarters shows AO3. The final sentence introduces the next AO1 point cleanly. Note that no sentence is wasted on background information about netball itself.
Model continuation: Overload must still be gradual, otherwise the performer risks overtraining, fatigue, and injury, which would reduce performance rather than improve it. Finally, reversibility means fitness is lost if training stops, so the performer should keep training through the season, and tedium should be avoided by varying methods, for example adding interval or circuit sessions. Regular testing such as the multi-stage fitness test allows the performer to check that the programme is genuinely working.
9. Sample Essay 2: 9-Mark Question on Commercialisation |
Question: Commercialisation has had a major impact on sport. Evaluate the impact of commercialisation on performers and spectators. (9 marks)
Sample answer (AO1 paragraphs): Commercialisation is the process of sport becoming a business, generating income through sponsorship, media broadcasting rights, merchandise, and endorsement deals, often described as the golden triangle of sport, media, and sponsorship. Performers benefit because clubs and athletes receive far greater revenue. Premier League clubs earn billions from broadcast deals, and this money funds better facilities, sports science support, and higher wages, which can raise the standard of performance.
Sample answer (AO2 application): For example, a top Premier League footballer may earn millions
