1. Introduction to Scientific Case Studies |
In CCEA Science, a case study presents a scenario with data, observations or an experimental design. You must use your understanding of scientific principles to interpret the information, perform calculations, and evaluate the procedure. Typical marks are awarded for knowledge application, data analysis, and evaluation, and the three strands are usually weighted roughly equally in a well-constructed question. That means a purely descriptive answer, however long, will rarely reach the top band.
A case study is not a memory test. The examiner is checking whether you can transfer a principle you have met in a familiar context into an unfamiliar one - a hospital ward, a water treatment plant, a wind turbine, a food factory. Recognising the underlying principle is therefore the first skill, and communicating it precisely in scientific language is the second.
2. Deconstructing the Question: Identifying Key Concepts |
Before diving in, read the question twice. Underline command words such as 'describe', 'explain', 'calculate' or 'evaluate'. Identify the relevant topic area - mechanics, equilibrium, enzyme kinetics, transport across membranes - and write the governing equation or principle in the margin before you write anything else. This single habit prevents the most common failure in case study answers: answering the question you expected rather than the one that was set.
Use the following mapping to decide what each command word demands of your answer.
| Command word | What the examiner wants |
| Describe | State the trend or observation, with data quoted. |
| Explain | Give the mechanism or reason using correct terminology. |
| Calculate | Show working, units and sensible significant figures. |
| Evaluate | Weigh strengths against limitations and reach a judgement. |
Finally, check the mark allocation. A four-mark 'explain' question normally needs four distinct creditworthy points, not one point repeated in four ways.
3. Physics Case Study: Motion and Energy Data |
Consider a trolley released from rest on a ramp, travelling 0.50 m down the slope in 0.80 s. A student claims the ramp is frictionless because the trolley accelerates smoothly. The case study asks you to test that claim using energy data, given a trolley mass of 0.50 kg and a vertical drop of 0.15 m.
Start with kinematics. From s = ut + ½at² with u = 0:
由 s = ut + ½at²,且 u = 0:
a = 2s ÷ t² = (2 × 0.50) ÷ (0.80)² = 1.6 m s⁻²
Then v = at = 1.6 × 0.80 = 1.3 m s⁻¹, so the final kinetic energy is:
Eₖ = ½mv² = 0.5 × 0.50 × (1.28)² ≈ 0.41 J
The gravitational potential energy lost is Eₚ = mgh J is far less than 0.74 J, roughly 0.33 J has been dissipated, most plausibly by friction and air resistance. The claim is therefore not supported by the data.
ing with a stopwatch introduces a reaction-time uncertainty of roughly ±0.2 s, which is 25% and a light gate would be needed before any strong conclusion about friction is justified.
4. Chemistry Case Study: Titration and Reaction Rate |
A water laboratory is checking the acidity of a waste stream. A 25.0 cm³ sample of hydrochloric acid is titrated with 0.100 mol dm⁻³ sodium hydroxide, and the mean titre of three concordant runs is 23.40 cm³. The case study asks for the acid concentration and a comment on whether the method is fit for purpose.
Because the reaction is HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O, the mole ratio is 1 : 1.
n(NaOH) = c × V = 0.100 × (23.40 ÷ 1000) = 2.34 × 10⁻³ mol
c(HCl) = n ÷ V = 2.34 × 10⁻³ ÷ 0.0250 = 0.0936 mol dm⁻³
Note the correct treatment of units: cm³ must be converted to dm³ by dividing by 1000, and the answer is quoted to three significant figures, matching the precision of the titre. A common error is to leave the volume in cm³, which produces an answer 1000 times too large.
For the evaluation, the indicator endpoint is itself an approximation, and a coloured or turbid waste stream would obscure the colour change, so the method is reliable for clear laboratory samples but questionable for industrial effluent. An alternative such as a pH meter with calibration buffers would reduce the subjective endpoint judgement.
5. Biology Case Study: Diffusion and Surface Area to Volume Ratio |
A biology case study describes agar cubes of side 1 cm, 2 cm and 3 cm soaked in acid for 10 minutes. In every cube the acid penetrates 0.50 cm from each face. The question asks you to explain why small organisms can rely on diffusion alone while large ones cannot.
Calculate the percentage of each cube reached by the acid. The unpenetrated core has side (l − 1.0) cm.
| 1 cm | 6 ÷ 1 = 6.0 cm⁻¹ | 100% |
| 2 cm | 24 ÷ 8 = 3.0 cm⁻¹ | 1 − (1 ÷ 8) = 87.5% |
| 3 cm | 54 ÷ 27 = 2.0 cm⁻¹ | 1 − (8 ÷ 27) = 70.4% |
The data show a clear inverse relationship: as side length increases, the surface area to volume ratio falls, and the proportion of the organism reached by diffusion falls with it. Since diffusion is a passive process driven by a concentration gradient and is only effective over short distances, a large organism would have a hypoxic or metabolite-rich core unless a transport system, large surface area or flattened shape compensates.
6. Data Analysis: Tables, Graphs and Units |
Data analysis carries a substantial share of the marks in every CCEA case study. Begin by identifying the independent variable, the dependent variable and the controlled variables, then decide whether the data are discrete or continuous before you choose a graph form. Continuous data belong on a line graph with a smooth curve or line of best fit; discrete categories belong on a bar chart.
When quoting data, always give the value with its unit and, where relevant, the condition. Compare like with like, for example the rate at 30 °C against the rate at 20 °C rather than against an arbitrary point on the curve. If the question asks for a rate, calculate the gradient:
rate = Δy ÷ Δx
Read the gradient over the steepest, most nearly linear section of the curve, and quote the unit of the gradient, such as cm³ s⁻¹ for gas volume against time. A gradient taken over a curved region will not score.
Finally, look for anomalies. A single point far from the trend should be identified as anomalous and, where the question allows, excluded from the line of best fit with a brief justification.
7. Calculations, Significant Figures and Uncertainty |
CCEA rewards correct working as well as correct answers, so write each step on its own line and carry units through the calculation. Quote your final answer to the same number of significant figures as the least precise piece of data, usually two or three. An answer quoted to six decimal places from two-figure data loses a mark even when the arithmetic is right.
Two formulae appear repeatedly in evaluation questions. The percentage difference between an experimental and a theoretical value is:
% difference = (|experimental − theoretical| ÷ theoretical) × 100
And the percentage uncertainty of a single measurement is:
% uncertainty = (uncertainty ÷ measured value) × 100
For a result obtained by multiplication or division, add the percentage uncertainties of the contributing measurements. For addition or subtraction, add the absolute uncertainties instead. This lets you state whether a discrepancy between theory and experiment is genuine or simply within experimental error, which is exactly the kind of judgement a top-band evaluation requires.
8. Evaluating Method, Validity, Reliability and Accuracy |
Evaluation is where most marks are lost and where the strongest candidates separate themselves. Learn the four terms precisely, because examiners will not accept them interchangeably.
- Validity | 有效性: the experiment measures what it claims to measure, with all other variables controlled.
- Reliability | 可靠性: repeated measurements give consistent results, judged by a small spread around the mean.
- Accuracy | 准确性: the result is close to the true or accepted value.
- Precision | 精密度: individual readings agree closely with each other, regardless of whether they are correct.
Classify errors as random or systematic. Random errors scatter readings either side of the true value and are reduced by repeating and averaging. Systematic errors shift every reading in the same direction - a zero error on a balance, an uncalibrated pH probe, heat loss to the surroundings - and repeating does not remove them; only recalibration or a redesigned method will.
Every evaluation point should follow the pattern: problem, consequence, improvement. For example, 'heat is lost to the surroundings, so the temperature rise is underestimated and the enthalpy change is too small; insulating the container and using a lid would reduce this'. A point without the improvement rarely earns full credit.
9. Writing Evidence-Based Conclusions |
A strong conclusion does four things in four sentences. It states the relationship found, quotes numerical evidence with units, links the result to the underlying scientific principle, and acknowledges the confidence you have in it given the uncertainties. Vague endings such as 'the results were good' score nothing.
Compare the two responses below to the same biology data.
Weak | 薄弱: 'The rate increased as temperature increased and then went down. The experiment mostly worked but there were some errors.'
Strong | 优秀: 'Enzyme activity rose from 2.1 cm³ s⁻¹ at 20 °C to 6.4 cm³ s⁻¹ at 40 °C, a threefold increase consistent with greater kinetic energy and more frequent successful collisions. Above 50 °C activity fell sharply to 0.8 cm³ s⁻¹, indicating denaturation of the active site rather than a reversible slowing. The trend is reliable because three repeats agreed within 0.2 cm³ s⁻¹, though the 40 °C result carries a percentage uncertainty of about 3%, so the optimum is stated as between 38 °C and 42 °C.'
Note how the strong answer never uses the word 'it' without a referent, quotes units every time, and separates observation from explanation.
10. Common Pitfalls from Examiner Reports |
Examiner reports for CCEA science repeatedly highlight the same avoidable errors. Reviewing them before your mock is one of the highest-value hours of revision you can spend.
- Describing a trend without quoting any data. |
- Giving the correct number with no unit, or with the wrong unit. |
- Explaining what happened rather than why, so the mechanism mark is missed. |
- Writing one evaluation point in three different ways to fill space. |
- Ignoring the scenario and writing a textbook essay on the topic. |
- Failing to state the direction of an effect, for example whether a value rises or falls. |
Notice that not one of these errors is caused by a gap in knowledge. They are all communication failures, which means they can be fixed by practice and by marking your own work against the mark scheme.
