1. Confusing Theoretical Perspectives |
A high-frequency error involves mixing up the foundational sociological perspectives. Functionalism (Durkheim, Parsons) is a consensus theory that sees society as a system of interdependent institutions working together to maintain stability and value consensus. Marxism is a conflict theory focused on class struggle between the bourgeoisie and proletariat, arguing that institutions serve the interests of the ruling class. Feminism emphasises patriarchy and gender inequality. Interactionism (or interpretivism) is a micro-level approach examining how individuals create meaning through everyday interactions. Students often mistakenly label feminism as simply 'Marxist feminism' or think interactionism is a macro theory like functionalism.
Another common mistake is using the wrong perspective to answer a question. For example, if asked to explain the functions of the family, many candidates offer a Marxist critique without first outlining the functionalist view. You must use the perspective the question targets; if the question says 'from a functionalist perspective', do not include Marxist ideas unless you are evaluating.
2. The Family: Functions and Diversity |
The family is a core topic. A classic high-frequency exam question asks about the functions of the family. Murdock (1949) identified four universal functions: sexual, reproductive, economic and educational (socialisation). Parsons argued that the modern nuclear family has two irreducible functions: primary socialisation of children and stabilisation of adult personalities (warm bath theory). However, a major mistake is presenting these as if they apply to all families or are timeless. Students need to evaluate them by considering criticisms from Marxist and feminist perspectives, and by highlighting family diversity (Rapoports, 1982) such as lone-parent, reconstituted and same-sex families.
A common mistake is to say that the nuclear family is the 'best' or 'most natural'. This is ethnocentric. Many students fail to reference cross-cultural examples or the Rapoports' five types of diversity (organisational, cultural, class, life-course, cohort). When evaluating, always bring in evidence of family variation and the idea that family functions may be provided by other institutions today.
3. Education: Functions and Hidden Curriculum |
Education questions often test understanding of both official and hidden curriculum. Functionalists (Durkheim, Parsons) see education as promoting social solidarity, teaching skills and selecting individuals for roles (role allocation). In contrast, Marxists (Bowles & Gintis, 1976) use the correspondence principle to argue that schools mirror the workplace and reproduce class inequality. The hidden curriculum is the informal learning of norms, values and attitudes such as obedience, punctuality and acceptance of hierarchy. A common error is to think the hidden curriculum is always negative or deliberately designed; functionalists might see it as necessary for social order.
Students often confuse the 'hidden curriculum' with informal sanctions or simply forget to explain
