📚 IGCSE CAIE History: Core Knowledge Points Summary | IGCSE CAIE
Cambridge IGCSE History (syllabus 0470) rewards students who combine secure factual knowledge, disciplined source analysis and a clear written argument. This guide summarises the core knowledge points that matter most: the structure of the examination, the content of the 20th century core, the depth studies, and the source and essay techniques that convert knowledge into marks.
1. Examination Structure and Papers |
The Cambridge IGCSE History syllabus (0470) is assessed entirely by written examinations. Students normally sit Paper 1, which tests the Core Content through source-based questions and essay questions, and Paper 2, which is usually based on a Depth Study. Paper 4 is an alternative to coursework: a longer essay paper on a Depth Study, available only where coursework is not permitted. Paper 3 (coursework) exists only in a small number of centres.
In practical terms, Paper 1 and Paper 2 each run for around two hours, while Paper 4 is shorter, roughly one hour. Always check the current syllabus for the year of entry, because paper weighting and availability can be updated. Knowing the structure on the day matters: you must decide quickly which essay questions to attempt and protect enough time for the source question, which is usually the first question on the paper.
2. Core Content Options: Option A or Option B | 核心内容选项:A 与 B
CAIE offers two main core content routes. Option A covers 'The 19th Century: The Development of Modern Nation States, 1848-1914', focusing on nationalism, unification and the growth of modern states in Europe. Option B covers 'The 20th Century: International Relations since 1919', focusing on peacemaking, the League of Nations, the collapse of international order and the Cold War. This article concentrates on Option B because it is by far the more common choice in international schools.
Option B is organised around a series of key questions, each of which becomes a possible essay topic and frames the source material. Typical key questions include whether the peace treaties of 1919-23 were fair, how successful the League of Nations was, why international peace collapsed by 1939, who was to blame for the Cold War, how effectively the USA contained communism, and how secure Soviet control over Eastern Europe was.
Core Content (Option B) ⇌ Source Question + Essay Question ⇌ Paper 1
3. The Peace Treaties of 1919-23 | 1919-23 年的和平条约
The settlement after the First World War is the foundation of the whole Option B course. Students must know the aims of the 'Big Three' - Wilson's Fourteen Points and self-determination, Lloyd George's balance between punishing Germany and preserving trade, and Clemenceau's demand for security and revenge. The terms of the Treaty of Versailles, signed on 28 June 1919, must be recallable in detail: Article 231 (the war guilt clause), reparations eventually set at £6,600 million, an army limited to 100,000 men, no air force, submarines or tanks, a demilitarised Rhineland, loss of around 13 per cent of territory and 10 per cent of population, the Saar placed under League control, Danzig as a Free City, and the prohibition of Anschluss with Austria.
The other treaties must also be known, because questions often ask how far the settlement as a whole was fair or how far it was likely to last.
| Treaty | Year | Defeated Power | Key Features |
| Saint-Germain | 1919 | Austria | Empire broken up, Anschluss forbidden, army reduced |
| Neuilly | 1919 | Bulgaria | Territory lost to Greece, Romania and Yugoslavia |
| Trianon | 1920 | Hungary | About two thirds of territory and population lost |
| Sèvres | 1920 | Turkey | Harsh terms, revised by Lausanne in 1923 |
4. The League of Nations and Collective Security |
The League of Nations was established on 10 January 1920 with its headquarters in Geneva, built on the Covenant and the principle of collective security. Its main organs were the Assembly, the Council and the Secretariat, supported by the Permanent Court of International Justice and specialised agencies such as the International Labour Organization. Students should be able to explain the League's structural weaknesses: the absence of the USA, the exclusion of Germany and the USSR for long periods, the rule of unanimity in the Council, the lack of an armed force, and the reliance on economic sanctions that often hurt small states more than aggressors.
For the 1920s, use specific cases: the Aaland Islands dispute (1921) and Upper Silesia (1921) are usually presented as successes, while Corfu (1923) exposed the League's weakness when great powers were involved. For the 1930s, Manchuria (1931) and Abyssinia (1935-36) are the decisive failures: in both cases the League condemned aggression but took no effective action, and the Hoare-Laval Pact destroyed its remaining moral authority. Strong answers link these failures directly to the collapse of peace by 1939.
5. Why Had International Peace Collapsed by 1939?
This key question requires a multi-cause explanation, not a story. The main ingredients are: the weaknesses of the peace settlement and German resentment; the failure of the League of Nations; the impact of the Great Depression, which pushed Japan, Italy and Germany towards aggressive expansion; the USA's isolationism and the policy of appeasement followed by Britain and France; and Hitler's own aims, set out in Mein Kampf - the reversal of Versailles, the union of German speakers, Lebensraum in the east, and the destruction of communism.
Anchor the narrative in dated turning points: Japanese invasion of Manchuria (1931), Hitler's rise to power (1933), German rearmament announced (1935), the Rhineland remilitarised (1936), the Spanish Civil War and Rome-Berlin Axis (1936), the Anschluss (March 1938), the Munich Agreement (September 1938), the invasion of Prague (March 1939), the Nazi-Soviet Pact (23 August 1939) and the invasion of Poland (1 September 1939). The Pact is particularly important because it removed the threat of a two-front war and made Hitler's gamble on Poland possible.
Versailles → League Failures → Depression → Appeasement → Pact → War
6. Who Was to Blame for the Cold War? |
Good answers treat this as a debate about interpretation, not a search for a single guilty party. The orthodox or traditional view places responsibility on Soviet expansionism and Stalin's determination to create a buffer zone in Eastern Europe. The revisionist view blames the USA, pointing to the atomic bomb, the delay in opening a second front, and the use of economic power through the Marshall Plan. Post-revisionist historians emphasise mutual misunderstanding, the security dilemma, and the fact that both superpowers acted on the basis of their own historical experience.
Support your argument with evidence from the conferences and early crises: Yalta (February 1945) and Potsdam (July-August 1945), where the wartime alliance visibly fractured over Poland, Germany and reparations; the 'Iron Curtain' speech (1946); the Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan (1947); the Berlin Blockade and airlift (1948-49); NATO (1949); and the creation of the Warsaw Pact (1955).
7. Containing Communism and Soviet Control |
The containment key question asks how effectively the USA resisted the spread of communism. The clearest case study is Korea (1950-53): the USA intervened through the United Nations, pushed North Korean forces back, then faced Chinese intervention and ended in stalemate at roughly the 38th parallel. The Cuban Missile Crisis (October 1962) shows containment working through blockade and negotiation, with both sides stepping back from nuclear war, but also shows the risk of escalation.
The mirror question concerns the security of Soviet control over Eastern Europe. Key evidence includes the Hungarian Uprising (1956), crushed by Soviet tanks; the Berlin Wall (1961), built to stop the flow of refugees; the Prague Spring and its suppression (1968), which produced the Brezhnev Doctrine; and the rise of Solidarity in Poland (1980), which revealed that Soviet-style control was eroding. The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 and the collapse of communist governments across Eastern Europe demonstrate that control was ultimately unsustainable.
8. Depth Studies: What to Expect |
Depth Studies allow students to study one country or region in detail, and they are assessed mainly through Paper 2 and, in some centres, Paper 4. Common options include Germany 1918-45, Russia 1905-41, the USA 1919-41, China 1911-49, South Africa 1948-94 and the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians since 1945. Check which Depth Study your school has registered for, because revision must target that option.
A useful depth study answer combines political, economic, social and international factors, and treats the period as a chronological argument rather than a list of events. For Germany 1918-45, for example, you need the Weimar crises of 1919-23, the stabilisation and cultural flourishing of 1924-29, the impact of the Depression, the rise of the Nazi Party, the nature of Nazi rule, policies towards women, young people, workers and minorities, and the road to war.
9. Source Analysis Skills |
Source questions reward precision, not description. Every source question expects you to identify the message or purpose, use the provenance (author, date, type, audience) to judge reliability or usefulness, and explain the limitation of a single source. The key skill is distinguishing what a source says from what it proves, and using your own knowledge to test or contextualise it.
A reliable structure works well: state the message of the source, support it with a short quotation or specific detail, analyse the purpose behind it, evaluate it using provenance, and reach a judgement. When a question asks 'How useful is this source?', remember that usefulness depends on the question being asked - a propaganda poster can be extremely useful evidence about the regime that produced it, even if its factual claims are false.
10. Essay Technique and Structure |
Essay questions are marked on knowledge, explanation and judgement. A high-scoring answer starts with a short introduction that states your line of argument, develops two
