1. A Historic Foundation: 1557 and Its Origins |
Repton School was founded in 1557, so it has a history of more than 460 years. Its foundation is often linked in popular accounts to a church pastor, but the historical record points to Sir John Port, a leading judge and landowner, whose charitable bequest was intended to give local children access to education. The school therefore grew out of a tradition of Christian charity and local patronage.
In its earliest years the school was small and closely connected with the church and the village community. Over the centuries it survived political and social change, gradually gaining a reputation for scholarship and character formation. Its historic buildings and customs remain part of its identity today.
