1. Camera Shots & Angles |

Close-up (CU): A shot that tightly frames a subject, often a face, to reveal emotion or significant detail.

Medium shot (MS): Frames a person from the waist up, balancing character and setting.

Long shot (LS): Shows the subject from a distance, emphasising the environment or scale.

Extreme close-up (ECU): Frames only a small part of the subject, such as an eye or a key object.

High angle shot: Camera looks down on the subject, making it appear small or vulnerable.

Low angle shot: Camera looks up at the subject, conveying power or dominance.

2. Camera Movement |

Pan: The camera swivels horizontally from a fixed position, like shaking your head ‘no’.

Tilt: Camera moves vertically from a fixed point, similar to nodding ‘yes’.

Tracking shot (dolly): The camera moves alongside the action, often on rails, keeping pace with a subject.

Zoom: Changing the focal length to move closer to or further from the subject without moving the camera.

Crane shot: Camera is mounted on a crane, allowing sweeping vertical movements high above the scene.

3. Mise-en-Scène |

Mise-en-scène: A French term meaning 'placed in the scene' – everything visible within the frame: setting, props, costume, lighting, colour and figure positioning.

Setting: The physical environment where the action takes place, chosen to create mood or symbolise themes.

Props: Objects used by actors or placed in the set that carry meaning or advance the narrative.

Costume: Clothes and makeup worn by characters, revealing time period, status or personality.

High-key lighting: Bright, even illumination with few shadows, often used in upbeat scenes.

Low-key lighting: Strong contrasts with deep shadows, creating suspense or fear.

4. Sound | 声音

Diegetic sound: Sound whose source is visible on screen or implied by the story world, such as dialogue, footsteps or a radio playing.

Non-diegetic sound: Sound added for the audience only, such as background music or voiceover narration.

Sound bridge: Sound from the next scene begins before the current scene ends, linking two sequences smoothly.

Synchronous sound: Sound matches the action precisely, like lips moving with spoken words.

Asynchronous sound: Sound does not match the visible action, creating disorientation or tension.

5. Editing |

Cut: The most basic edit where one shot instantly replaces another, creating pace.

Continuity editing: A system of cutting that maintains clear and seamless narrative flow, making action appear continuous.

Match on action: Cutting from one shot to another while the subject is still moving, making the action seem uninterrupted.

Jump cut: An abrupt transition that breaks continuity, often used to show time passing or disorientation.

Cross-cutting (parallel editing): Alternating between two or more scenes happening simultaneously in different locations.

Dissolve: One shot gradually fades into another, often suggesting a passage of time or link between images.

6. Narrative Theories |

Tzvetan Todorov – Equilibrium theory: Narrative moves from equilibrium (balance) through disruption to a new equilibrium. Remember the three-stage E-D-E pattern.

Vladimir Propp – Character types: Identifies recurring character roles such as the hero, villain, donor, helper and princess.

Roland Barthes – Enigma code: A mystery or question raised by the narrative that hooks the audience until it is resolved.

Roland Barthes – Action code: An element that implies further narrative action; for example, a character picking up a knife signals forthcoming violence.

7. Representation | 表征

Representation: The way media portrays people, places and events through selection and construction, not simply reflecting reality.

Stereotype: A simplified, often exaggerated representation of a social group, focusing on easily recognisable traits.

Countertype: A positive or alternative representation that challenges the dominant stereotype.

Mediation: The process through which media producers select, edit and shape raw material into a media text, influencing our perception.

Selection and omission: Producers consciously include certain elements and exclude others to construct a particular representation.

8. Audience | 受众

Target audience: The specific group of people a media product is aimed at, defined by age, gender, interests, etc.

Uses and gratifications (Blumler & Katz): Four reasons audiences use media: information, personal identity, integration and social interaction, and entertainment.

Encoding/decoding (Stuart Hall): Producers encode messages; audiences decode them in preferred, negotiated or oppositional readings.

9. Genre & Conventions |

Genre: A category of media text sharing similar themes, styles and narrative patterns, such as horror, sitcom or news.

Convention: A familiar technique or element repeatedly used within a genre, e.g. jump scares in horror.

Iconography: The visual symbols and objects that instantly signify a genre, such as cowboy hats in Westerns.

Hybrid genre: A text that blends conventions from two or more genres, e.g. romantic comedy or docudrama.

10. Industry & Institutions |

Conglomerate: A large parent company that owns multiple media subsidiaries, e.g. Disney.

Synergy: When different parts of a media conglomerate work together to promote linked products, boosting overall profit.

Cross-media convergence: The integration of multiple media platforms, so a film may be accompanied by a game, soundtrack and website.

Regulation: Rules and guidelines that control what media can be shown, such as age ratings or the Ofcom broadcasting code.

Independent media: Productions made outside the major studio system, often featuring more niche or experimental content.

11. Media Language & Codes |

Anchorage: Text that fixes or 'anchors' the meaning of an image, preventing polysemy, e.g. a caption.

12. Quick Memory Tips |

Camera shots acronym: Think 'C-M-L-E': Close-up, Medium, Long, Extreme – just add an ‘E’ at the front or back.

Sound categories: 'D for the story world, Non-D for us only.' Diegetic = in the story, Non-diegetic = out of the story.

Editing rhythm: Imagine editing beats like a heart – cuts speed up to build tension, slow down for calm.

Narrative theories trio: Todorov balance, Propp characters, Barthes codes – use 'To-Pr-Ba' as a mnemonic.

Representation reminder: Media is a construction, not a mirror. Ask: who is shown, how, and what is missing?

Audience active or passive?: Remember that audiences don't just soak up messages – they decode, select and use media.
