📚 IGCSE WJEC Philosophy: High-Frequency Topics and Common Mistakes Analysis | IGCSE WJEC

For students tackling the WJEC IGCSE Philosophy specification, a clear grasp of the most frequently examined themes can make all the difference. This article breaks down the core topics that appear year after year, identifies the common pitfalls that cost marks, and offers targeted revision strategies. Whether you are grappling with the design argument, free will, or the mind-body problem, understanding where others stumble helps you stay on track.

1. The Structure of the Exam and Assessment Objectives |

The WJEC IGCSE Philosophy paper is designed to test knowledge, understanding, and evaluation. Part (a) questions ask for straightforward definitions or explanations, while parts (b) and (c) demand more developed reasoning and critical assessment. A frequent mistake is treating a (c) question as a simple recall task instead of a balanced argument that weighs both sides before reaching a justified conclusion.

Students often lose marks by failing to address the precise command words. 'Explain' means set out causes, reasons, or mechanisms; 'evaluate' means judge strengths and weaknesses. Simply describing a theory without weighing it against counterarguments limits you to lower bands. Time management is another skill: spending too long on early parts leaves you rushed for the higher-mark questions where depth matters most.

The specification emphasises four assessment objectives: AO1 (knowledge), AO2 (understanding), AO3 (analysis), and AO4 (evaluation). When revising, practise distinguishing between these. For instance, a list of key terms shows AO1, while comparing two ethical theories in a structured paragraph demonstrates AO3 and AO4. Many candidates confuse analysis with evaluation: analysis breaks ideas down, while evaluation makes a judgement about their value.

2. The Design Argument: Strengths and Weaknesses |

One of the most popular topics is the teleological argument, often represented by William Paley's watchmaker analogy. The key idea is that the complexity and apparent purpose in nature suggest an intelligent designer. Candidates frequently describe the analogy accurately but fail to break down its logical structure: the world resembles a watch, watches have designers, therefore the world probably has a designer. Missing the inductive, probabilistic nature of this reasoning is a common slip.

When answering a strengths question, students often repeat the analogy without adding new insight. Stronger answers link Paley to cumulative evidence: the eye's intricate structure, the fine-tuning of physical constants, or the apparent 'irreducible complexity' of biological systems. However, many candidates fail to mention David Hume's criticisms. Hume pointed out that the universe is not sufficiently like a watch for the analogy to hold, and that even if there is a designer, it does not prove the God of classical theism.

Another common mistake in the evaluation of the design argument is confusing the argument for God's existence with the argument from analogy. Students often present the design argument as if it were deductive, saying 'the design argument proves God exists'. In reality, it is an a posteriori, inductive argument that only suggests probability. Examiners look for the ability to weigh the argument's plausibility against alternative explanations such as evolution by natural selection, which can account for apparent design without a designer.

3. The Cosmological Argument and the Problem of Infinite Regress |

The cosmological argument, especially Aquinas' versions, appears frequently. Candidates need to know the difference between the Kalam argument ('whatever begins to exist has a cause') and Aquinas' first three ways. A typical error is mixing up the argument from motion, causation, and contingency. The argument from contingency is distinct because it relies on the distinction between necessary and contingent beings, and many students fail to explain why the universe cannot be the necessary being itself.

Examiners report that weaker answers simply state 'everything has a cause, therefore God exists', which is a straw man. A more precise rendering is 'we observe a series of dependent causes; if the series were infinite, there would be no first cause and no subsequent causes; therefore there must be a first uncaused cause'. The critical edge comes from questioning whether an infinite regress is truly impossible, or whether the first cause need be identified with God.

A common evaluative pitfall is forgetting to address the possibility that the universe itself is the necessary being, as David Hume proposed. Also, Bertrand Russell's objection that the universe just is 'a brute fact' requires no further explanation is often overlooked. To reach the top band, you must show that you have considered not only theistic but also atheistic responses to the demand for an ultimate explanation.

4. Religious Experience as Evidence for God |

WJEC expects candidates to handle religious experience with nuance. William James' four characteristics of mystical experience – ineffability, noetic quality, transiency, and passivity – are regularly tested. Students often memorise these but cannot explain what 'noetic quality' means: that mystical states seem to impart knowledge or insight to the experiencer, even though the content is hard to articulate.

The argument from religious experience states that in the absence of defeating conditions, we should trust our experiences. Swinburne's principle of credulity is central: we ought to believe that things are as they seem unless we have evidence to the contrary. However, a familiar mistake is to assume this principle automatically validates all religious experiences. Candidates must discuss defeating conditions – such as the experiencer being on drugs, suffering mental illness, or the experience contradicting known facts.

The challenge of conflicting truth claims from different religious traditions is a vital evaluative point. If a Christian mystic experiences Jesus as Lord, and a Hindu mystic experiences Brahman, they cannot both be literally correct. Some students simply ignore this problem or dismiss it by saying 'they are all paths to the same truth', which does not engage with the logic of contradiction. A stronger approach is to consider whether experiences are shaped by cultural and doctrinal background, or whether a common core underlies all mystical states.

5. The Problem of Evil: Logical and Evidential Versions |

The problem of evil is a cornerstone topic. Students must distinguish between the logical problem (the existence of an omnipotent, omnibenevolent God is logically incompatible with any evil) and the evidential problem (the amount and distribution of evil make God's existence improbable). A frequent confusion is treating both as the same, which blunts the precision needed for a high-mark answer.

When presenting theodicies, such as Augustine's or Irenaeus', candidates often retell the narrative but forget to match the theodicy to the specific type of evil. Augustine's theodicy deals primarily with moral evil as a consequence of free will and the Fall, but it struggles to explain natural evil before the Fall. Irenaeus' soul-making theodicy addresses natural evil as part of character development, yet critics argue an omnipotent God could achieve moral growth without extreme suffering. Top answers directly link the theodicy to the precise challenge it is meant to answer.

A recurring mistake is to assert that free will completely solves the problem of evil. This ignores the criticism that free will might not require the possibility of horrific evil – an omnipotent God could have created beings who always freely choose good. Furthermore, the evidential problem remains potent: even if some evil is necessary for free will, the sheer volume of suffering seems excessive. Engaging with this disproportion demonstrates genuine evaluation.

6. Utilitarianism: Act, Rule, and Misapplications |

In moral philosophy, utilitarianism is a staple. Students can usually recite the principle of utility – 'the greatest happiness for the greatest number' – but often stumble when applying it to scenarios. The calculation of happiness requires weighing intensity, duration, certainty, and extent, but candidates frequently treat it as a simple numbers game, ignoring Bentham's full hedonic calculus. This oversimplification leads to shallow ethical analysis.

A classic pitfall is confusing act utilitarianism with rule utilitarianism. Act utilitarianism judges each individual action by its consequences, whereas rule utilitarianism asks which general rule, if followed, would maximise happiness. When a question asks for the strengths of rule utilitarianism, candidates sometimes write about act utilitarianism instead. Rule utilitarianism avoids some problems of justice, because a rule like 'do not punish the innocent' generally leads to greater overall happiness even if in a single case framing an innocent person might create temporary pleasure.

In evaluation, a weak answer lists disadvantages without linking them to the theory's core logic. For instance, the objection that utilitarianism is too demanding – it asks us to sacrifice our own projects for the sake of strangers – should be tied to the principle of impartiality. Similarly, the justice objection (punishing an innocent to prevent a riot) exposes a tension between aggregating welfare and respecting individual rights. Using such links shows integrated understanding.

7. Kantian Ethics: Duty, the Categorical Imperative, and Mistakes |

Kant's deontological approach is another high-yield topic. The categorical imperative, in its various formulations, needs careful handling. Students regularly misstate the first formulation: 'Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.' A common error is to interpret this as 'what if everyone did it?' – which is a consequentialist question. Kant is concerned with whether the maxim can be consistently conceived as a universal law, not with what would happen if everyone actually followed it.

When discussing the second formulation – treating humanity always as an end, never merely as a means – candidates often oversimplify. They say 'never lie because it uses people', but lying to a murderer at the door arguably does not treat the murderer merely as a means; it respects the intended victim's humanity. Good answers explore the nuance: using someone as a means is permissible when they consent or when their rational nature is respected; it is 'merely' as a means that is prohibited.

Evaluation of Kantian ethics often falls short because students do not engage with the conflict of duties. Kant maintains that no genuine conflict exists, but critics point to cases like the axe murderer where the duty not to lie seems to clash with the duty to preserve innocent life. Presenting this as a real tension and considering whether Kant's absolutism is defensible earns high marks. Also, the charge of emptiness – that the categorical imperative is a mere test for consistency and does not generate specific moral rules – is an underused but powerful critical point.

8. Virtue Ethics: Eudaimonia and the Doctrine of the Mean |

Although sometimes less loved by candidates, virtue ethics appears regularly. The focus is on character rather than rules or consequences. Students need to explain eudaimonia (flourishing or living well) as the final end of human life, and show how virtues like courage and temperance are means between extremes. A typical misunderstanding is that the doctrine of the mean is about moderation in everything, which would make cowardice a virtue relative to recklessness. Aristotle's mean is relative to us and determined by reason, not arithmetic.

Answers often confuse virtue ethics with relativism. While the mean is relative to the individual situation, Aristotle maintains there is an objective fact about what the virtuous person would do. The standard is the phronimos – the practically wise person. Failing to mention phronesis (practical wisdom) in an essay on virtue ethics is a significant omission because without it, the theory cannot offer guidance in concrete situations.

For evaluation, the objection that virtue ethics lacks action guidance is crucial. Unlike deontology, which gives clear duties, or utilitarianism, which gives a decision procedure, virtue ethics seems to say 'act as a virtuous person would', which is circular. Supporters reply that virtue ethics provides guidance through the virtues themselves – honesty, compassion, courage – and that no rule can replace practical wisdom. A top-level evaluative paragraph will pit this response against the original objection rather than leaving them as separate bullet points.

9. Free Will and Determinism: Compatibilism and Incompatibilism |

This topic challenges students to clarify conceptual distinctions. Hard determinists argue that all events, including human actions, are causally determined, so free will is an illusion. Libertarians defend free will and reject determinism. Compatibilists, like David Hume, argue that free will is compatible with determinism because freedom simply means being able to act according to one's desires without external coercion. A frequent error is to present compatibilism as a 'middle ground' without explaining its redefinition of freedom.

Students often misuse the term 'hard determinism' and 'soft determinism'. Soft determinism is another name for compatibilism, but many candidates think it means 'some things are determined and some are not', which is actually libertarianism or indeterminism. Clarifying that soft determinism fully accepts determinism but reinterprets freedom is essential. Labelled diagrams can help, but they must be explained in full sentences.

Evaluation requires more than stating 'libertarianism is unscientific'. A strong critique of libertarianism might target the incoherence of agent causation or the randomness objection: if an action is undetermined, it appears to be random, and randomness is not the same as free choice. For compatibilism, the 'consequence argument' (Peter van Inwagen) is an important evaluative tool: if determinism is true, we have no choice about the past or the laws of nature, and therefore no choice about the consequences; this challenges the compatibilist claim that we could have done otherwise.

10. The Mind-Body Problem: Dualism vs. Physicalism |

The mind-body problem asks how mental states relate to physical states. Substance dualism, defended by Descartes, holds that mind and body are distinct substances. Candidates often caricature Descartes by saying 'he thought the mind pushes the pineal gland', missing the serious philosophical challenge of interactionism. The real problem is: how can a non-physical mind cause physical effects without violating the conservation of energy? This is the interaction problem, and it must be clearly stated.

Physicalist theories like mind-brain identity theory and functionalism are also examined. Identity theory claims that mental states just are brain states, while functionalism defines mental states by their causal roles. Many students confuse these: they say 'mind is brain' without specifying whether it is type identity or token identity, and they rarely explain multiple realizability – the argument that different physical systems could have the same mental state, which challenges strict identity theory.

The 'knowledge argument' (Mary the colour scientist) and the 'philosophical zombie' argument are popular evaluative points against physicalism, but they are often poorly explained. Mary has all the physical information about colour but learns something new when she sees red for the first time; this suggests there are non-physical facts. Candidates should not just describe the thought experiment, but analyse what it implies about physicalism's completeness. Likewise, the possibility of zombies (beings physically identical to us but without consciousness) is not just a sci-fi idea but a modal argument about conceptual possibility.

11. Common Mistakes in Writing Evaluation Paragraphs |

Across all topics, the weakest part of many answers is evaluation. A typical error is the 'twin paragraph' approach: one paragraph describes strengths, the next describes weaknesses, with no linking or comparison. This lists points without developing a line of argument. High-scoring evaluation shows interaction between reasons: 'Although X claims P, this is weakened by Q; nonetheless, X might reply that...' This structure should be practised regularly.

Another mistake is confusing criticism with rejection. A criticism may point out a limitation without destroying the theory. For example, saying 'utilitarianism fails because it cannot measure happiness precisely' is overstated; Mill responded that we do not need perfect measurement for practical decision-making. A more nuanced point is that interpersonal comparisons of utility are difficult, which reduces but does not eliminate the theory's usefulness. Using qualifying language like 'raises a challenge for', 'may undermine', or 'is not decisive because' signals a mature evaluative voice.

Finally, candidates often write evaluations that are unconnected to the specific exam question. If the question asks 'evaluate the design argument as proof of God's existence', do not write a generic essay on the design argument. Every evaluative paragraph should explicitly reference whether the argument succeeds as a proof, not merely as a reasonable belief. Tailor the content to the question's precise focus. This is the single most effective way to move from middle to top bands.
