1. Cell Biology |
Eukaryotic cells (plant and animal) contain membrane-bound organelles. The nucleus stores genetic material, mitochondria perform aerobic respiration, ribosomes synthesise proteins, and the cell membrane controls passage of substances. Plant cells additionally have a cell wall made of cellulose, chloroplasts for photosynthesis, and a large permanent vacuole for support and storage.
Prokaryotic cells, such as bacteria, are much smaller and have no membrane-bound organelles. Their genetic material is a single circular loop of DNA, and many also carry small rings called plasmids, which are widely used in genetic engineering.
| Organelle | Function |
| Mitochondria | Site of aerobic respiration |
| Ribosomes | Protein synthesis |
| Vacuole | Support and storage (plant cells) |
2. Microscopy and Magnification |
Magnification questions are near-certain on OCR papers. The formula triangle you must memorise is:
magnification = image size ÷ actual size
rt . Always convert measurements to the same unit before dividing. The standard conversions are 1 mm = 1000 µm and 1 µ and the actual size is 0.5 mm, then magnification = 50 ÷ 0.5 = 100, so the image is ×100.
. Remember that magnification only makes an image larger; resolution, the ability to distinguish two close points, is what improves detail, and this is why electron microscopes reveal organelles that light microscopes cannot.
3. Transport Across Membranes |
Diffusion is the passive movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration. It needs no energy, and its rate increases with a steeper concentration gradient, a higher temperature and a larger surface area.
Osmosis is the diffusion of water through a partially permeable membrane from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution. Active transport moves substances against a concentration gradient and therefore requires energy released by respiration.
Multicellular organisms rely on a large surface area to volume ratio for efficient exchange. Villi in the small intestine, alveoli in the lungs and root hair cells all share the same adaptations: a large surface area, a thin membrane and, in animals, a rich blood supply to maintain the gradient.
4. Enzymes and Digestion |
Enzymes are biological catalysts made of protein. They are specific because the substrate fits into the active site like a key in a lock. Each enzyme has an optimum temperature, around 37 °C in the human body, and an optimum pH.
Above the optimum temperature the bonds holding the enzyme together break, the active site changes shape, and the enzyme is denatured, so the rate of reaction falls sharply. Pepsin in the stomach works best at pH 2, while amylase in the mouth works best around pH 7.
- Amylase converts starch into maltose.
- Protease converts proteins into amino acids.
- Lipase converts lipids into fatty acids and glycerol.
Bile, produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder, neutralises stomach acid so that intestinal enzymes can work, and emulsifies fat into small droplets to increase the surface area for lipase.
5. Photosynthesis and Respiration |
Photosynthesis is an endothermic reaction that transfers light energy into chemical energy stored in glucose. The word and symbol equations must both be learned.
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
Light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and temperature are the three limiting factors. On a graph, the rate rises with the factor under investigation until another factor becomes limiting, at which point the line levels off.
Aerobic respiration is the exothermic reverse process, releasing energy for muscle contraction, active transport and keeping warm.
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O
When oxygen is insufficient, muscles respire anaerobically to produce lactic acid, which builds up and causes fatigue. Yeast carries out anaerobic respiration to produce ethanol and carbon dioxide, the reaction used in brewing and bread making.
6. Genetics and Inheritance |
DNA is a polymer of two strands coiled into a double helix. A gene is a section of DNA that codes for a particular protein, and chromosomes are coiled structures of DNA found in the nucleus. Human body cells contain 23 pairs of chromosomes.
Mitosis produces two genetically identical diploid cells for growth and repair. Meiosis produces four genetically different haploid gametes, halving the chromosome number so that fertilisation restores the diploid number and creates variation.
Alleles are different versions of the same gene. A dominant allele is expressed even when only one copy is present, while a recessive allele is expressed only when two copies are present. In a Punnett square, the parents' gametes are written along the top and side, and the boxes show the possible offspring genotypes.
- Genotype = the alleles present; phenotype = the observable characteristic.
基因型 = 拥有的等位基因;表现型 = 可观察到的性状。 - Homozygous = two identical alleles; heterozygous = two different alleles.
- Expected ratios such as 3:1 or 1:1 must be stated as probabilities, not guarantees.
7. Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table |
An atom has a nucleus of protons and neutrons surrounded by electrons in shells. Protons carry +1 charge, neutrons are neutral, and electrons carry -1 charge. The atomic number equals the number of protons, and the mass number equals protons plus neutrons.
Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. They have identical chemical properties but different physical properties such as density, and the relative atomic mass is a weighted mean of the isotope masses.
Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in their outer shell, so they have similar chemical properties. Group 1 alkali metals become more reactive down the group, group 7 halogens become less reactive down the group, and group 0 noble gases are unreactive because their outer shells are full.
Moving across a period, the number of shells stays the same while the nuclear charge increases, so atoms become smaller and metallic character decreases.
8. Bonding and Quantitative Chemistry |
Ionic bonding occurs between metals and non-metals: electrons are transferred to form charged ions, and the oppositely charged ions are held in a giant lattice by strong electrostatic forces. Ionic compounds have high melting points and conduct electricity only when molten or in aqueous solution.
Covalent bonding occurs between non-metals, where pairs of electrons are shared. Simple molecular substances have weak intermolecular forces and therefore low melting points, even though the covalent bonds within the molecules are strong. Metallic bonding involves positive ions in a sea of delocalised electrons, which explains why metals conduct electricity and heat.
The number of moles is the key quantitative idea and is calculated as follows:
moles = mass ÷ relative formula mass
³ molecules. In a balanced equation, mass is always conserved, and the sum of the relative formula masses of the reactants equals that of the products, which is why mass seems to be lost when a gas escapes into the air.
9. Chemical Reactions: Rates, Energy and Equilibrium |
The rate of a reaction depends on collision theory: particles must collide with sufficient energy for a reaction to occur. Increasing temperature, concentration or pressure, and increasing the surface area of a solid, all increase the frequency or energy of collisions.
A catalyst lowers the activation energy by providing an alternative pathway, so a greater proportion of collisions are successful. Catalysts are not used up and do not change the position of equilibrium.
Exothermic reactions transfer energy to the surroundings, so the temperature rises; endothermic reactions take in energy, so the temperature falls. Reversible reactions can reach dynamic equilibrium in a closed system, where the forward and backward rates are equal and concentrations remain constant.
According to Le Chatelier's principle, if a condition changes, the equilibrium shifts to oppose the change. In the Haber process, N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ 2NH₃, a high pressure of about 200 atm favours the forward reaction because there are fewer gas molecules on the right, while a moderate temperature of about 450 °C with an iron catalyst balances rate and yield.
10. Forces, Energy and Motion |
Newton's second law links force, mass and acceleration. A resultant force causes acceleration in the direction of the force, and on a velocity-time graph the gradient gives acceleration while the area under the line gives distance travelled.
F = m × a W = m × g
ance-time graph with a horizontal line shows a stationary object, and the gradient gives speed. Typical stopping distances increase with speed because both thinking distance and braking distance increase.
Energy is conserved but can be transferred usefully, stored or dissipated. The key equations for calculations are:
KE = ½ m v² GPE = m g h efficiency = useful output ÷ total input
Efficiency is often expressed as a percentage, and no real machine is 100 % efficient because energy is dissipated to the surroundings, usually by heating.
11. Electricity and Circuits |
Charge flow, current, potential difference and resistance are linked by three equations that appear in almost every paper. Current is the rate of flow of charge, and potential difference is the energy transferred per unit charge.
Q = I t V = I R P = V I E = P t
In a series circuit the current is the same everywhere, the potential difference is shared between components, and the total resistance is the sum of the individual resistances. In a parallel circuit the potential difference is the same across each branch, the current splits, and adding a branch decreases the total resistance.
