1. Measures of Central Tendency |
Central tendency provides a single value that represents the centre of a data set. The three main measures are the mean, median and mode.
The mean is calculated by summing all scores and dividing by the number of scores: Mean = Σx / n, where Σx is the sum of observations and n is the number of observations. It is sensitive to extreme values.
The median is the middle value when data are ordered. For an odd number of scores, it is the centre score. For an even number, it is the average of the two middle scores. The median is not distorted by outliers.
The mode is the most frequently occurring value in a data set. A set can have one mode (unimodal), more than one (multimodal) or no mode at all. The mode is the only measure suitable for nominal data.
In psychological research the mean is the most commonly reported average because it takes all data into account and is used in further calculations such as the standard deviation.
2. Measures of Dispersion |
Dispersion tells us how spread out the scores are around the central value. The main measures are the range, variance and standard deviation.
The range is the simplest measure: Range = Maximum value – affected by a single extreme score and does not show how data are distributed internally.
The standard deviation indicates the average distance of each score from the mean. A low standard deviation means data are tightly clustered around the mean; a high standard deviation signals greater variability. The sample standard deviation is given by:
s = √[ Σ(x – x̄)² / (n – 1) ]
where x is each individual score, x̄ is the sample mean, and n is the sample size. For populations the denominator becomes N.
The variance is simply the square of the standard deviation: s² = Σ(x – x̄)² / (n – advanced analyses but is measured in squared units, making it less intuitive to interpret.
When comparing two sets of data, researchers check both the mean and the standard deviation to understand group differences.
3. Percentiles and Quartiles |
Percentiles divide a data set into 100 equal parts, showing the percentage of scores that fall below a particular value. A score at the 80th percentile means that 80% of scores are lower.
The quartiles split the ordered data into four equal groups: Q1 (25th percentile) is the first quartile, Q2 (50th percentile) is the median, and Q3 (75th percentile) is the third quartile. The interquartile range (IQR = Q3 – Q1) describes the middle 50% of scores and is resistant to outliers.
四分位数将有序数据分成四个相等的组:Q1(第 25 百分位)是第一四分位数,Q2(第 50 百分位)即为中位数,Q3(第 75 百分位)是第三四分位数。
To determine a percentile position, a common method uses Position = (p/100) × (n + 1). If the position is a decimal, interpolation is employed, but at IGCSE level a simpler nearest-rank approach is often accepted.
Percentiles and quartiles are widely used when reporting norm-referenced test results, such as IQ scores or school percentile ranks.
4. Correlation and Spearman's Rank Correlation Coefficient |
Correlation measures the strength and direction of a relationship between two variables. The Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (rₛ) is a non-parametric test suitable for ordinal data or when assumptions of parametric tests are not met.
The formula for Spearman's rₛ is:
rₛ = 1 – (6 Σ d²) / (n(n² – 1))
where d is the difference between the ranks of each pair of observations, and n is the number of pairs. The value of rₛ ranges from –1 (perfect negative correlation) to +1 (perfect positive correlation). A value near 0 indicates no relationship.
Steps for calculating rₛ: (1) Rank each variable separately, giving the highest score rank 1. (2) Find the difference d between the two ranks for each participant. (3) Square each d to obtain d². (4) Sum all d² and insert into the formula together with n. (5) Compare the obtained rₛ with a critical value table to assess significance.
Spearman's rₛ is often used in IGCSE psychology when students analyse scatter graphs and test for a relationship, for example between age and memory score.
5. Percentage Change |
Psychologists frequently report changes in behaviour using percentage change, especially when comparing pre-test and post-test results in an experiment.
The basic formula is:
Percentage Change = ((New Value – Original Value) / Original Value) × 100
indicates an increase; a negative result shows a decrease. For instance, if a participant's reaction time decreased from 250 ms to 200 ms, the percentage change is ((200 – 250) / 250) × 100 = –20%.
This formula also helps to calculate percentage increase or percentage decrease in studies of cognitive improvement or decline. Always be clear about which value serves as the baseline.
6. Weber's Law and Difference Threshold |
In the study of perception, Weber's Law explains how we detect changes in stimuli. The difference threshold (just noticeable difference, JND) is the minimum change in a stimulus that can be detected 50% of the time.
Weber's Law is expressed as:
ΔI / I = k
where ΔI is the just noticeable difference in intensity, I is the initial stimulus intensity, and k is the Weber fraction (a constant that varies across sensory modalities). For example, if the Weber fraction for lifted weights is 0.02, a weight of 100 g would need a 2 g increase before the difference is noticed.
Consequently, the JND can be predicted as JND = k × I. Weber's Law helps psychologists design experiments where stimulus changes need to be detectable.
7. The Normal Distribution and Z-Scores | 正态分布与Z分数
Many psychological variables, such as IQ, are normally distributed. The normal curve is bell-shaped, symmetric, and the mean, median and mode coincide at the centre.
A z-score standardises a raw score by expressing how many standard deviations it lies from the mean:
z = (x – μ) / σ
n, and σ is the population standard deviation. For sample data, the formula becomes z = (x – x̄) / s.
Z-scores allow researchers to compare scores from different distributions. They are particularly useful when discussing probability under the normal curve. Approximately 68% of values fall within ±1 standard deviation, 95% within ±2, and 99.7% within ±3.
| ±1 SD | 68.26% of scores |
| ±2 SD | 95.44% of scores |
| ±3 SD | 99.74% of scores |
This is sometimes called the empirical rule and is referenced when psychologists judge how unusual a given observation is.
8. Significance Levels and p-Values | 显著性水平与p值
Inferential statistics help psychologists decide whether their results reflect a real effect or chance. The p-value represents the probability of obtaining the observed result (or one more extreme) if the null hypothesis were true.
A conventional significance level is p ≤ 0.05. If p is less than or equal to 0.05, the result is deemed statistically significant, and the null hypothesis is rejected. This means there is less than a 5% probability the result occurred by chance.
ger evidence against the null hypothesis. The choice of significance level must be stated before the study begins to avoid bias.
When using Spearman's rₛ, the calculated coefficient is compared with a critical value that corresponds to the chosen significance level and the degrees of freedom (
