📚 IGCSE CIE Philosophy High Score Experience Sharing | IGCSE CIE 哲学:学霸高分经验分享
Philosophy at IGCSE level is not about memorising the 'right' answers. It is about learning how to think, argue, and evaluate ideas with clarity and rigour. The Cambridge IGCSE Philosophy syllabus (0406) challenges students to engage with fundamental questions about knowledge, reality, morality, and human existence. High achievers in this subject share a common set of habits: they understand the assessment objectives, they practise structured argumentation, and they constantly connect abstract theories to concrete examples. In this article, I will share the strategies that helped me score top marks, and how you can apply them to your own revision.
1. Understanding the Syllabus Inside Out | 彻底理解考纲
Before you open a textbook, print out the syllabus and highlight every key term, learning objective, and assessment criterion. The CIE IGCSE Philosophy syllabus is your roadmap. It tells you exactly what topics will be examined, what skills are assessed (knowledge and understanding, analysis and evaluation), and how marks are allocated. Students who score A* always plan their revision according to these objectives, never by simply reading the textbook from cover to cover. For example, if the syllabus says 'explain and evaluate Plato's theory of Forms', you know you must be able to describe the theory and also weigh its strengths and weaknesses. Use the syllabus to create a checklist and tick off each objective as you master it.
2. Active Reading and Note-Taking | 主动阅读与笔记
Passive reading is the enemy of deep understanding. Instead of just highlighting sentences, turn each paragraph into a question. For instance, when reading about Descartes' Meditations, ask yourself: 'What is the role of the evil demon argument?', 'How does Descartes reach the Cogito?', 'What are two major objections to his rationalism?' Write down your answers in your own words. Use a format that forces you to condense information: mind maps for thematic connections, Cornell notes for key arguments, and flash cards for definitions. The goal is to transform the textbook content into a personal revision tool that highlights relationships between ideas, not just isolated facts.
3. Mastering Philosophical Terminology | 掌握哲学术语
Philosophy has its own vocabulary, and examiners expect you to use it precisely. Terms like a priori, empiricism, dualism, utilitarianism, categorical imperative, and qualia must become part of your active writing lexicon. However, never use a complex term just to sound clever; misuse will lose you marks. Create a glossary with a simple definition, the philosopher associated with the term, and an example sentence. For example: 'Empiricism – the view that all knowledge comes from sense experience (Locke, Hume). E.g., Hume argues that ideas are copies of impressions.' Review this glossary regularly and test yourself by writing paragraphs that incorporate three or four terms naturally.
哲学有自己的一套词汇,考官期望你能精准地使用它们。像 a priori(先天)、empiricism(经验论)、dualism(二元论)、utilitarianism(功利主义)、categorical imperative(定言令式) 和 qualia(感受质) 这样的术语必须成为你写作词库中活跃的一部分。然而,千万不要为了显得聪明而使用一个复杂术语;误用反而会丢分。制作一个术语表,包含一个简单的定义、与此术语相关的哲学家和一个例句。例如:"经验论——认为一切知识来源于感官经验的观点(洛克、休谟)。例如,休谟论证观念是印象的摹本。"定期复习这个术语表,并通过写作自然融入三四个术语的段落来检测自己。
4. Comparing Different Philosophical Perspectives | 对比不同哲学观点
A high-scoring answer never presents one theory in isolation. The syllabus is structured around debates: rationalism vs empiricism, dualism vs materialism, theism vs atheism, deontological vs consequentialist ethics. You must be able to explain where two thinkers agree, where they diverge, and why. Start by making comparison tables. For example, for the mind-body problem, list Descartes' substance dualism on one side and Ryle's category mistake on the other. Under each, note their core claim, key arguments, and a criticism. Then practise writing a paragraph that smoothly transitions from one view to the other, using signposting language like 'In contrast', 'While Descartes argues that...', 'Ryle challenges this by...'.
5. Structuring Your Arguments Effectively | 有效构建论证结构
Every paragraph you write in the exam should follow a clear logical flow: Point, Explanation, Example, Evaluation (PEEE). Start with a concise sentence that states your point. Then explain the philosophical idea in detail, showing your understanding. Next, apply it to a concrete example or thought experiment, which demonstrates you can use the theory. Finally, evaluate: consider a limitation, a counterexample, or a strength of the argument. This structure ensures that you always hit the assessment objectives for knowledge, application, and evaluation. Practice writing timed paragraphs that follow PEEE, and you will stop rambling and start writing analytically.
6. Using Examples and Thought Experiments | 善用例子与思想实验
Philosophy comes alive through thought experiments. A well-chosen example can illuminate a difficult concept and show the examiner that you truly understand the material. Be familiar with classics such as Plato's Cave, the Ring of Gyges, the Trolley Problem, Mary the Colour Scientist, and the Chinese Room. However, do not just describe the example; explain its philosophical purpose. For instance, 'Searle's Chinese Room is designed to show that syntactic manipulation of symbols is not sufficient for semantic understanding, thus challenging strong AI.' You can also create your own simple, clear analogies, but ensure they are accurate. A creative, precise example often distinguishes a top-band script.
7. Practicing Past Papers Strategically | 有策略地练习历年真题
There is no substitute for past paper practice, but it must be done with intention. Start by attempting questions with your notes open, focusing on structure and content quality. Then gradually move to timed, closed-book conditions. After writing, use the mark scheme to self-assess: identify where you lost marks for knowledge, where your analysis was superficial, and where your evaluation lacked balance. Keep a 'mistake log' where you record recurring errors, such as confusing act utilitarianism with rule utilitarianism, or forgetting to mention a counter-argument. Revisit these logs weekly. As you get closer to the exam, practise planning answers to a range of questions in just 5 minutes, outlining your PEEE structure and key examples.
8. Time Management in Exams | 考试时间管理
Many students lose marks not because they do not know the material, but because they run out of time. Plan your time based on mark allocation. For a typical 45-mark paper with a 1-hour time limit, you have roughly 1.3 minutes per mark. A 12-mark question should take no more than 16 minutes. Allocate 2-3 minutes at the start to read the paper and choose your questions wisely, and 5 minutes at the end for a quick review. During practice, use a timer and train yourself to finish each question within its allocated slot. If you find yourself over-writing on a part that is only worth 3 marks, you are stealing time from higher-mark questions. Be disciplined.
9. Developing Critical Thinking Skills | 培养批判性思维能力
IGCSE Philosophy examiners are not looking for a summary of what philosophers said. They want to see you think. Critical thinking means questioning assumptions, identifying flaws in reasoning, and weighing evidence. To build this skill, when you finish reading a philosopher's argument, always ask: 'What would a reasonable opponent say?' 'What hidden premise does this argument rely on?' 'Is there an alternative explanation?' For example, when studying the design argument for God's existence, go beyond Hume's criticisms and ask if the analogy between a watch and the universe is even valid. Discuss these questions with classmates or write short reflection pieces. This habit will sharpen your evaluative paragraphs immensely.
10. Evaluating Strengths and Weaknesses | 评估论证的优缺点
Evaluation is what elevates an answer from a B to an A*. A good evaluation does not just say 'this argument is weak'. It identifies a specific flaw and explains why it matters. For example, 'A weakness of Kant's categorical imperative is that it can lead to conflicting duties; in the case of the inquiring murderer, lying to protect a friend and telling the truth both seem to be morally required, which reveals a rigidity in the theory.' Also evaluate strengths: 'Despite this, the categorical imperative provides a clear, universalisable standard that avoids the uncertainties of consequentialist calculation.' Use phrases like 'on the other hand', 'however', 'a further limitation is', and 'this is significant because'. Practise writing evaluations that are balanced and forensic, not dismissive.
11. Engaging with Counterarguments | 积极回应反方论点
The strongest essays do not just present one side; they engage with opposing views and then respond to them. This demonstrates a higher level of philosophical maturity. For example, if you are defending utilitarianism, first acknowledge a strong objection: 'Critics argue that utilitarianism can justify unjust actions, such as punishing an innocent person if it creates greater overall happiness.' Then, answer this objection: 'A rule utilitarian would reply that adopting a rule against punishing the innocent would lead to greater utility in the long run, thus the objection fails to undermine the sophisticated form of the theory.' Always give the final word to the side you are supporting. This 'rebuttal' technique shows evaluative sophistication.
12. Staying Consistent and Reflective | 保持连贯与反思
Philosophy rewards consistency. If you adopt a viewpoint in one part of your answer, do not contradict it later without explanation. Before the exam, reflect on your own philosophical positions: Are you more convinced by rationalism or empiricism? Do you lean towards deontological or consequentialist ethics? You do not need to be a rigid adherent to one camp, but having a clear sense of where you stand can help you write with conviction. After each practice essay, ask yourself: 'Did my argument hold together?', 'Did I address the question directly?', 'Would a reader find my reasoning persuasive?' This reflective habit will refine your writing voice and improve your overall coherence.
