📚 IGCSE AQA Engineering: Practical Examination Key Points | IGCSE AQA
The practical examination (Paper 2) in AQA IGCSE Engineering accounts for 40% of the overall qualification. It assesses your ability to apply knowledge, use tools and equipment safely, take accurate measurements, record and analyse data, and evaluate outcomes. Because the marks come from what you actually do rather than only from what you write, careful preparation in the workshop and the laboratory is worth far more than last-minute memorising.
1. What Paper 2 Actually Rewards | Paper 2
Paper 2 is a skills-based assessment, not a memory test. Assessors watch how you plan a task, select tools and materials, work safely, control quality, record evidence and reflect on your own results. A beautifully finished product with no recorded reasoning can score lower than a simpler product supported by clear drawings, measurements and evaluation.
The marks are normally spread across four broad areas: planning and preparation, safe and competent making, recording and analysing data, and evaluating outcomes. Before you start any task, ask yourself which of these four areas the current step is earning marks for.
2. Safety in the Workshop and Lab |
Always wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety goggles, lab coats, and steel-toe boots when working with tools, chemicals, or machinery. PPE minimises the risk of injury from flying debris, chemicals, or heavy falling objects. PPE is the last line of defence, not the first, but it is the one examiners check most visibly.
- Eyes: safety goggles or a full face shield when drilling, grinding, chiselling or handling liquids.
- Hands: gloves for chemicals and hot components, but never wear loose gloves near rotating machinery.
- Body: aprons or lab coats, and tie back long hair; remove loose sleeves, scarves and jewellery.
- Feet: closed, steel-toe footwear in the workshop; never sandals or trainers with exposed toes.
Keep the workspace clean and free of clutter. Immediately report any damaged equipment or tools to the instructor - never use faulty devices. Know the location of emergency stops, fire extinguishers, and first-aid boxes.
Conduct a brief risk assessment before starting the task. Identify potential hazards (e.g., sharp edges, hot surfaces, electrical shock) and apply control measures such as guards, insulation, or ventilation.
3. Risk Assessment: The Five-Step Habit |
A risk assessment is a short, written statement of what could go wrong and what you will do about it. In an exam setting, a good assessment takes five minutes and can earn planning marks on its own. Work through the same five steps every single time until they become automatic.
| 1 Identify | 识别 | What could cause harm?
| 2 Who | 谁受害 | Who is at risk? | Me and nearby students | 我和周围同学 |
| 3 Control | 控制 | How do I reduce it?
| 4 Record | 记录 | Have I written it down?
| 5 Review | 复核 | Has anything changed? | New drill bit = new check | 换新钻头就要重新确认 |
The hierarchy of control runs from elimination and substitution, through engineering controls such as guards and extraction, to administrative controls such as signs and training, with PPE last. Examiners like to see that you understand this order.
4. Reading Drawings and Technical Information |
Most practical tasks begin with a drawing. You must extract the shape, dimensions, tolerances and finish required before touching a single tool. Orthographic views in first-angle projection place the plan below the front view and the side view on the right; third-angle projection reverses this. Always confirm which convention the paper uses.
± 0.2 mm means the finished part must measure between 39.8 mm and 40.2 mm. Symbols such as Ø for diameter, R for radius and M for metric threads must be read correctly.
A parts list or cutting list tells you how many of each component you need, and an assembly drawing shows the order of construction. Sketching your own exploded view before assembly is a fast way to avoid mistakes and to earn planning marks.
5. Choosing Materials and Processes |
Material choice must be justified by function. Consider tensile strength, hardness, toughness, density, electrical and thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, cost and workability. A bracket that must resist bending needs stiffness; a casing that must insulate a circuit needs a non-conductive polymer.
Match the process to the material: sawing, filing and drilling for metals; laser cutting or line bending for acrylic; 3D printing for complex polymer geometry. Justify your choice in one sentence in your log - examiners reward reasoning, not brand names.
6. Hand Tools and Machine Tools |
Tool selection is assessed directly. A hacksaw suits bar stock, a tenon saw suits timber, a file removes small amounts of material and a twist drill makes holes. Using the wrong tool wastes time, damages the workpiece and can be unsafe.
When using machines such as pillar drills, lathes, milling machines or band saws, always follow the same sequence: check the machine, secure the workpiece, set the guard, confirm the speed, and only then switch on. Never leave a chuck key in place, and never remove swarf with bare hands or while the spindle is turning.
Sharp tools are safer than blunt ones because they require less force. Control the feed rate: too fast overheats the edge and tears the material, too slow rubs and work-hardens the surface. Deburr every cut edge with a file before handling or assembly.
7. Measurement and Accuracy Control |
and a micrometer resolves to about ±0.01 mm. Using a micrometer for a rough timber cut is a waste of time; using a rule for a bearing fit will fail the tolerance.
Average = Σx ÷ n (平均值 = 各次读数之和 ÷ 测量次数)
Take every critical measurement three times and record the mean. Repeat measurements reduce random error, while systematic error - such as a zero error on a caliper - must be identified and corrected rather than averaged away. Always close the jaws gently and read at eye level to avoid parallax.
Mark out with a datum edge, a scriber, a try square and an engineer's blue where appropriate. Check squareness and flatness before drilling, and re-check dimensions after every machining operation rather than only at the end.
8. Electrical and Electronic Practical Work | 电气与电子实践
Electrical tasks require the same discipline as mechanical ones. Draw or read the circuit diagram first, list every component and its value, and check polarity before applying power. Battery holders, LEDs, diodes and electrolytic capacitors all have a defined orientation.
V = I × R P = V × I Rtotal = R₁ + R₂ (series)
Use a multimeter correctly: voltage is measured in parallel with the component and current in series. Check the meter range before connecting, and never measure resistance in a live circuit. Confirm continuity of a soldered joint with the continuity setting.
When soldering, work in a ventilated area, keep the iron in its stand, tin the tip, and form a shiny fillet rather than a large blob. After assembly, test the circuit on a low-voltage supply before final fixing, and record the measured values next to the calculated ones.
9. Recording Data and Keeping a Log |
Evidence must be produced as you work, not reconstructed afterwards. Use a ruled table with a column for the quantity, the symbol, the unit and the instrument used. Units belong in the column heading, never repeated in every cell.
- Record to the resolution of the instrument, not to a made-up number of decimals.
- Write the date and time of each stage so progress can be traced.
- Sketch as well as write: a labelled sketch often explains more than a paragraph.
- Note any anomalies or accidents immediately, with the cause if known.
- Use a single line to cross out an error, write the correction beside it, and never use correction fluid.
A log that shows mistakes, causes and corrections is more convincing than a suspiciously perfect record. Examiners are trained to look for evidence of genuine process.
10. Assembly, Testing and Fault Finding |
Assemble in a logical order derived from the drawing, checking alignment and fit at each stage rather than forcing parts together. Dry-fit before permanent fixing, and keep fasteners in a tray so nothing is lost or mixed.
Testing should cover three levels: dimensional (does it measure correctly?), functional (does it do the job?) and safety (is it stable and insulated?). For a mechanism, test movement through the full range of travel; for a circuit, test each subsystem before testing the whole.
When something fails, work systematically: divide the system in half, test each half, and halve again. Check the simple causes first - loose connections, reversed polarity, blunt tooling, wrong material - before assuming a complex fault.
Record every fault, the diagnostic step that identified it, and the remedy applied. Fault finding is one of the highest-scoring activities in Paper 2 because it demonstrates applied knowledge under pressure.
11. Evaluating Outcomes Against the Specification |
Evaluation is not a description of what you did; it is a judgement of how well the outcome meets the original specification. Refer back to each requirement in turn and state whether it was met, partly met or not met, quoting the measurement or observation that justifies your claim.
Compare calculated values with measured values and explain the difference. A current that should be 0.20 A but reads 0.18 A suggests resistance in the leads, a discharged cell or a poor joint. Quantified explanations score far better than general comments such as 'it worked well'.
Then propose realistic improvements. Each suggestion should name the change, the reason and the expected effect: "increasing the base thickness from 6 mm to 9 mm would reduce deflection under the 5 kg load, because stiffness rises with the cube of thickness." That single sentence demonstrates physics, engineering and evaluation at once.
12. Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy |
Practical exams are lost to poor timekeeping more often than to poor skill. Divide the session into planning, making, testing and evaluating blocks, and protect the last ten minutes for cleaning down, checking your log and re-reading the brief.
| Phase | 阶段 | Share of time | 时间占比 | Key output | 关键产出 |
| Mark out and make | 划线与制作 | 50% | Finished component | 完成的零件 |
