1. Understanding the IGCSE AQA Politics Curriculum | 理解 IGCSE AQA 政治课程
The IGCSE AQA Citizenship Studies course is built around themes of power, justice, rights and responsibilities. You explore how democracy works, the role of law, the media and participation. The syllabus includes two components: a written examination (Paper 1) covering topics such as democracy and voting, political parties, the legal system and human rights; and a citizenship action project (Paper 2) where you campaign or advocate on an issue. These elements equip you with essential political literacy.
IGCSE AQA
For A-Level Politics, you will build on this foundation. The structure of the IGCSE exam – with short answers and extended writing – mirrors the progression to longer essays in A-Level. The citizenship project develops research and advocacy skills that prove useful when tackling A-Level source-based questions and political ideologies. Therefore, treat every IGCSE topic not as an isolated fact but as a building block for deeper political analysis.
2. Core Concepts and Political Literacy |
At IGCSE level, you encounter foundational political concepts: democracy, sovereignty, accountability, the rule of law, representation and participation. Understanding these terms clearly is essential because A-Level Politics assumes you can apply them in more complex contexts. For instance, from 'democracy' you will move to 'liberal democracy', 'direct vs representative democracy', and 'democratic deficit'.
Strengthen your political vocabulary by making a glossary. For each concept, write a definition in your own words and an example from current affairs. For example, define 'rule of law' and illustrate it with a case where the government was held accountable by the courts. This habit will accelerate your transition to A-Level study, where precision of language is key to earning high marks. It also helps you read more widely, as confident terminology use makes newspaper analysis far quicker.
3. Developing Critical Thinking and Argumentation |
The IGCSE course encourages you to present different viewpoints on an issue and reach a reasoned conclusion. A-Level Politics takes this further: you must analyse competing arguments, evaluate evidence, and construct sustained, balanced essays that demonstrate both depth and breadth. Start practising now by turning IGCSE-style 'discuss' questions into longer evaluations. For example, 'Is the UK truly democratic?' can become 'Evaluate the extent to which the UK can be considered a liberal democracy.'
