Read the following text carefully. It is written in the style of an AQA foundation-to-higher crossover passage, and it mixes narrative events with background description. Notice as you read which verbs describe single completed actions and which describe habits or settings.

El verano pasado mis padres y yo viajamos a Costa Rica. Pasamos dos semanas en un pueblo pequeño cerca de la playa de Tamarindo. Todos los días nos levantábamos temprano y desayunábamos fruta tropical. Por la mañana, mi hermana y yo íbamos a la playa mientras mis padres exploraban el bosque tropical. Un día hicimos una excursión al volcán Arenal y vimos monos y tucanes. El viaje fue increíble, pero el último día perdí mi pasaporte y tuvimos que ir a la embajada. ¡Qué estrés!

Now answer the questions in Spanish, using full sentences where possible. Answering in full sentences forces you to recycle the vocabulary and structures of the text, which is exactly what examiners reward.

Notice how question three forces the imperfect tense ('hacían', 'iban', 'exploraban') because it asks about a repeated routine, while question five forces the preterite ('perdió', 'tuvieron') because it asks about a single event. Question wording is a reliable signal for which tense to use.

Learn nouns with their article attached ('el viaje', 'la playa', 'el pasaporte') because gender errors are among the most frequent slips in exam scripts. When you revise, cover the English column and recall the Spanish, then reverse the process.
